Experiment 1:
Installation of GNS3: Graphical Network Simulator
GNS3 is a Graphical Network Simulator that allows emulation of complex networks. These programs allow you
to run operating systems such as Windows XP Professional or Ubuntu Linux in a virtual environment on your
computer. GNS3 allows the same type of emulation using Cisco Internetwork Operating Systems. It allows you
to run a Cisco IOS in a virtual environment on your computer. GNS3 is a graphical front end to a product called
Dynagen. Dynamips is the core program that allows IOS emulation. Dynagen runs on top of Dynamips to
create a more user friendly, text-based environment. A user may create network topologies using simple
Windows ini-type files with Dynagen running on top of Dynamips. GNS3 takes this a step further by providing a
graphical environment.
GNS3 allows the emulation of Cisco IOSs on your Windows or Linux based computer. Emulation is possible for
a long list of router platforms and PIX firewalls. Using an EtherSwitch card in a router, switching platforms may
also be emulated to the degree of the card’s supported functionality. This means that GNS3 is an invaluable
tool for preparing for Cisco certifications such as CCNA and CCNP.
I’d like to list a variety of Web sites that you will find useful:

GNS3 Quick Start Guide for Windows Users
This section will take you through the steps to get started with GNS3 in a Windows environment. All of the
critical and most important things to know will be covered, but for an in-depth discussion, see later sections of
this document. If you use Linux, there is a GNS3 Quick Start Guide for Linux Users in the next section.
Step 1: Download GNS3.
Use your Web browser to access http://www.gns3.com.
Click on the green Download button.
The easiest way to install GNS3 in a Windows environment is to use
the top file:
GNS3-2.2.17-all-in-one-regular.exe
.
STEP-1
Click on save button and then choose a location on your hard
drive ta save the file
Your download will begin. The file is a little under 90 MB in size
and will take less than 10 minutes to download on a DSL or
cable connection. Dail-up connection will take somewhat
longer.
STEP-2
Find the file you downloaded and double-
click on it to begin installing GNS3.
The GNS3 setup wizard will begin. Click the
next button.
Click the I Agree button to continue.
Here select the unchecked one winpcap and keep
remaining checked no change. Then click next.
Installation starts.
Click on next and the proceed to next step.
Npcap is now successfully installed.
Here click Next to complete the GNS3 installation.
here in this step select no option and then click next
for final installation to complete.
The installation of GNS3 has successfully installed on
your system.
After GNS3 window is opened automatically it detects the internet and connects to the GNS3 Server.
After connection establishment successfully then aal the icon will be appeared on the screen.
How to add Cisco files to GNS3 Project:
Step 1:
Go to edit and select preferences or by
shortcut key ctrl+shift+P
Here select IOS routers. Click on new.
Here select the IOS bin file to add to the GNS3
Project.
here in this step no changes will be made,
by default it will come and then click on
next.
in this step RAM allocation is required. We
can make a changed that we can increase
or decrease the RAM to that particular
Router.
But here we will make as default and then
click next.
Here in this step we are selecting
ethernet connection i.e slot ‘s
provicing . then click next after
selection how many Ethernet
connections we required to our
project.
Here in this step it is very important, click on
idle pc finder, this checks that the IOS image
file is suitable to our system or not.
like this it shows suitable for IOS image.
Click on ok then apply ,ok. Finally it is added to
the GNS3 project.
Finally the installation of GNS3 and adding of Cisco IOS Router’s are successfully completed.
Now we can start doing projects.
