Thank you for participating in this experiment. This study aims to examine the
effects of emotional stress on eyewitness testimonies.

Eyewitness Testimony is a legal term, referring to an account given by a person

of an event he or she has witnessed. Previous researchers, such as Loftus and
Palmer suggested that eyewitness accounts can be altered by the use of leading
questions. Following this, many other researchers have looked at several other
factors that can alter eyewitness accounts.

In the experiment you took part in today, we used this concept in a new domain.
We considered the factor emotional stress, and the effect it has on accounts. On
the one hand it is claimed that emotional stress increases the reliability of the
account whereas on the other, it is claimed that it decreases the reliability. Our
aim was to solve the conflict between the two sides.

You were shown one of two short videos: a more emotionally impacting car
accident or a less emotionally impacting car accident. You were then given a
copying task, which served as a distractor from what you saw in the video. It had
no relevance to the video. We then asked a few leading questions. We recorded
your answers to check if your accounts were accurate.

If you have any further questions about this study, please contact the researchers
named above at the given email address.
