Year 7 Maths PIP2 - Super Simplified No-Calculator Revision Guide

Each topic includes a sample question and a super simple explanation that you can do
without a calculator.

1.1 Square numbers and square roots


❓ Question: What is the square of 6? What is the square root of 36?

🧠 How to do it: A square number is a number times itself. 6 × 6 = 36. The square root
asks what number times itself gives 36? Answer: 6.

1.2 Order of operations


❓ Question: What is 2 + 3 × 4?

🧠 How to do it: Use BIDMAS. Do multiplication first: 3 × 4 = 12. Then add: 2 + 12 = 14.

1.3 Multiplying and dividing without calculator


❓ Question: What is 4.2 ÷ 2?

🧠 How to do it: Ignore the decimal: 42 ÷ 2 = 21. Now put the decimal back: 4.2 ÷ 2 = 2.1.

1.4 Charts and financial mathematics


❓ Question: How much did 3 apples cost if 1 costs £0.60?

🧠 How to do it: Multiply: 0.60 × 3 = £1.80. For charts, read the numbers carefully.

🧠 How to do it: Look at the height of the bar and the scale on the axis.

🧠 How to do it: A way to collect data by asking questions.

4.1 Multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100, 1000
