IGCSE 0511 (English as a Second Language) - Report Task Review &

Improved Version
Student: Sara

Task: Report on a New Shopping Centre

Word Count: Approx. 160 words

Annotated Version with Corrections

Report on the New Shopping Centre.
Last week, my classmate and I went to a new shopping centre. The manager wants students’
opinions about the new shopping centre. It includes my personal impression from a recent
visit with my friends.

The shopping centre is easy to access, with excellent transport and a lot of parking space. It
has a modern design and a green, welcoming environment. There are also good places to eat
that cater to different tastes and budgets. Many of the shops are quite expensive, and the
prices can be too high for students or some families. Although there are already a few
shopping centres in the area, people still visit this one because of its attractive appearance.

To attract more visitors, especially young people, the manager could introduce more
affordable shops, offer discounts, or organise special entertainment events. With these
improvements, I think this shopping centre could become very popular.

Improved Version (Model Band 1 Response)

Report on the New Shopping Centre

Last week, I visited the new shopping centre with a few classmates. This report outlines my
thoughts on the centre and provides suggestions to encourage more people to visit.

The shopping centre is easily accessible by public transport, and it has a large parking area
for cars. It is well-designed, clean, and has a pleasant atmosphere with plenty of greenery.
There is a wide variety of restaurants that offer different types of food, catering to all
budgets.

However, many of the shops are quite expensive, which may discourage students and
families from shopping there regularly. Although there are already other shopping centres
in the area, the unique appearance of this one still attracts many visitors.

To attract even more people, the managers could add more affordable stores, offer seasonal
discounts, and organise events like live music or themed weekends. These improvements
would make the shopping centre a more appealing destination for everyone.
Original Feedback
This is a clear attempt at a report-style response that shows a good understanding of the
task. The ideas are generally relevant and cover both the description of the shopping centre
and suitable suggestions. However, frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing
reduce the clarity and effectiveness of the language. With more attention to sentence
control, article use, and verb agreement, this could become a solid Band 2 response.
