AWARENESS OF TECHNOLOGY IN AGRICULTURE
INTRODUCTION :
Personal decision making, participation in and cultural affairs, and
economic productivity are the end goals of education in different disciplines at the individual
level. If knowledge and understanding of agriculturally-related scientific and technologically-
based concepts are included in the processes required for personal decision-making,
participation in civic and cultural affairs, and economic productivity, it is called agricultural
literacy. Agricultural awareness which requires understanding of basic concepts related to
agriculture, and their impacts on social and economic life of the society, is the first step of
agricultural literacy. This research study examined 310 prospective elementary teachers'
understandings of basic concepts related to agriculture, including its definition. Therefore;
participants' agricultural awareness as a prerequisite for literacy was examined. Research
participants were chosen among three programs, mathematics, science and social studies, at
the elementary education department. A questionnaire, prepared by the researchers, and
interviews with selected participants was the two ways to collect data. Data from
questionnaires were analyzed statistically, whereas data gathered through interviews were
analyzed qualitatively. Therefore; it is a mixed method research where two techniques were
used to analyze data. Quantitative data analysis corresponds mean values of participants with
regard to programs they attend. The mean difference among prospective elementary teachers'
from different programs was significant at the 0.05 level. Therefore, the sequence of means
display that prospective mathematics teachers are more knowledgeable than social studies
teachers and lastly, prospective science teachers have the least amount of agricultural
knowledge among the others. Participants' agricultural knowledge which might be counted as
the basic of agricultural awareness and literacy was at the moderate level. Qualitative data
analysis of interviews displays participants' reasoning and resources of what they know about
the issue. Details about qualitative analysis were given in the paper.

AWARENESS OF TECHNOLOGY IN AGRICULTURE
ABSTRACT :
Agricultural technologies are developed to increase production, resolve
chemo-physical, biological, and socioeconomic constraints related to crop production
systems. During the past three decades, there has been an increasing realization that
technologies need to be tailored to the circumstances of farmers as well as to future
sustainability goals including climate change projections. Climate projections from the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have shown skewed future rainfall patterns with
shortened growing seasons (leading to intermittent and terminal droughts) and extremes of
temperature all of which threaten agriculture production. Current threats require advanced
analysis of best-fit solutions in order for agricultural technologies to serve smallholder
farmers' needs. Climate smart agriculture defined as agricultural practices that sustainably
improve production, resilience of production systems, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
is required to overcome climate extremes and variability. Future food production systems will
rely heavily on the successful integration of a range of technologies that are climate
responsive and environmentally enhancing. Robust policies that will shape institutions to
deliver more agricultural produce and financial gains in the long term are needed. Although
there are clear extension messages for scaling up already, further research and refinement are
still required for adaptation to climate extremes and mitigation of emissions.

PROBLEM STATEMENT :
Through applying science and technology to the modern trend, the main
purpose of India's agriculture is to develop sustainably. Our country is facing several
problems related to agriculture like how to measure the efficiency of production, how to
generate revenue more of its expenses, how to increase the pace of economic growth, low
income of farmers, lack of irrigation facilities, lack of storage facilities, the humiliation of
natural resources, climate change and accompanying management. The groves of academe
need encouragement to grasp the flair of the apprentices. VKCs and e-choupal are the
initiatives which are helpful for the Indian farmers to access and retrieve the information
related to market support, agro finance, agro-business, agro-inputs by using integrated
internet. Increasing more and more information and communication technologies tackles the
challenges for farmers to improve the quality of their product and obtaining a better
price for agricultural produce. Using FM-Radio, T.V, magazine, newspapers; farmers get
information from
pre-sowing up to its harvest, all the activities for conservation, processing, marketing expert
advice and service for soil health, pesticides, fertilizers, etc. Using science and
technology and social wisdom needs to launch new agricultural techniques to making it
interesting and exciting economically so that educated youth choose to live in villages and
indulge in agriculture activities. Our inoperative enumeration has the potential to be
productive and contribute to the growth of the
Indian economy.

PROPOSED SOLUTION :
Some examples of how modern technology can be used to improve agriculture:
1. Monitoring and controlling crop irrigation systems via smartphone
Mobile technology is playing an important role in monitoring and controlling crop irrigation
systems.
With this modern technology, a farmer can control his irrigation systems from a phone or
computer instead of driving to each field.
Moisture sensors in the ground are able to communicate information about the level of
moisture present at certain depths in the soil.
2. Ultrasounds for livestock
Ultrasound is not only for checking on baby animals in the womb. It also can be used to
discover what quality of meat might be found in an animal before it goes to the market.
The testing of DNA helps producers to identify animals with good pedigrees and other
desirable qualities. This information can also be used to help the farmer to improve the
quality of his herds.
3. Usage of mobile technology and cameras
Some farmers and ranchers use apps like ‘Foursquare’ to keep tabs on employees. They also
put up cameras around the farm.
Livestock managers are wiring up their barn feedlots and pastures with cameras that send
images back to the central location like an office or home computer. They can keep a closer
eye on the animals when they are away or home for the night.
4. Crop Sensors
Crop sensors help apply fertilisers in a very effective manner, maximising uptake. They sense
how your crop is feeling and reduce the potential leaching and runoff into ground water.
Instead of making a prescription fertiliser map for a field before you go out to apply it, crop
sensors tell application equipment how much to apply in real time.
Optical sensors are able to see how much fertiliser a plant may need, based on the amount of
light reflected back to the sensor.
5.Vision about modern agriculture
Nearly everyone working on the future of modern agriculture is focused on efficiency. A
wide range of technologies will enable the transition of modern agriculture in the field.
Some technologies will need to be developed specifically for agriculture, while other
technologies already developed for other areas could be adapted to the modern agricultural
domain such as autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence and machine vision. If modern
agriculture is applied widely in the near future, millions of farmers will be able to benefit
from the acquisition of real-time farm information. Farmers need not spend significant
amount of time on acquiring farm data and will have access to disaster warnings and weather
information when a disaster event occurs. It is difficult to predict the future of technology in
agriculture but there are many promising trends and pilot projects.

METHODOLOGY :
We met the workers in the field and talked to them about how we can monitor crops using
smart phones any time and from anywhere and the schemes provided by the government like
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Karnataka which gives 6000rs annually in three
instalments of Rs. 2,000 each.
We told them about the Har Khet ko Pani “Prime Minister Krishi Sinchayee Yojana” and
how to improve the water usage as the saying goes ‘More Crop Per Drop’.

They were using the surface irrigation method which involves flood in fields with water,
results in substantial evaporation and runoff which leads to the wastage of water. So we
have suggested them about Drip Irrigation.
We told them about the drip irrigation system which involves placing tubing with emitters
on the ground along side the plants. The emitters slowly drip water into the soil at the root
zone and because moisture levels are kept at an optimal range, plant productivity and
quality improve.

We have suggested them to use Tractors in their field. The Tractor Drawn Cultivator is used
to loosen the previously plough land before sowing. It is also used to destroy weeds that
germinate after ploughing.
We have suggested them about “Pradhan Mantri Kisan Tractor Yojana ” under which the
Indian farmers can get a 50% subsidy on buying tractors. Under this, a beneficiary can
apply for the scheme, and the subsidary amount is sent to their account.
