Sample Problem in Calorimetry
3. A 100 g sample of Aluminum (Al) whose specific heat capacity is 0.90 𝐽/𝑔°𝐶 at 120°𝐶 and
a 150 g sample of iron (Fe) metal whose specific heat capacity is 0.45 𝐽/𝑔°𝐶 at 90°𝐶 were
placed in a container with 80 grams of water 15°𝐶. What is the final temperature (𝑇𝑓 )of the
mixture?
Given: Required:
𝑚𝐴𝑙 = 100 𝑔 𝑐𝐴𝑙 = 0.90 𝐽/𝑔°𝐶 𝑇𝐼 (𝐴𝑙) = 120°𝐶 𝑇𝐹 (𝑚𝑖𝑥𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒) =?
𝑚𝐹𝑒 = 150 𝑔 𝑐𝐹𝑒 = 0.45 𝐽/𝑔°𝐶 𝑇𝐼 (𝐹𝑒) = 90°𝐶
𝑚𝐻2 𝑂 = 80 𝑔 𝑐𝐻2 𝑂 = 4.184 𝐽/𝑔°𝐶 𝑇𝐼 (𝐻2 𝑂) = 15°𝐶
Solution:
𝛴𝑞 = 0
𝑞𝐴𝑙 + 𝑞𝐹𝑒 + 𝑞𝐻2 𝑂 = 0
𝑞𝐴𝑙 + 𝑞𝐹𝑒 = −𝑞𝐻2 𝑂
𝑚𝑐𝛥𝑇 + 𝑚𝑐𝛥𝑇 = −𝑚𝑐𝛥𝑇
100 (0.90)(𝑇𝐹 − 120°𝐶) + 150 (0.45)(𝑇𝐹 − 90°𝐶) = −(80)(4.184)(𝑇𝐹 − 15°𝐶)
90(𝑇𝐹 − 120°𝐶) + 67.5(𝑇𝐹 − 90°𝐶) = −334.72(𝑇𝐹 − 15°𝐶)
90𝑇𝐹 − 10800°𝐶 + 67.5𝑇𝐹 − 6075°𝐶 = −334.72𝑇𝐹 + 5020°𝐶
157.5𝑇𝐹 − 16,875°𝐶 = −334.72𝑇𝐹 + 5020°𝐶
157.5𝑇𝐹 + 334.72𝑇𝐹 = 5020°𝐶 + 16,875°𝐶
492.22𝑇𝐹 = 21,895°𝐶
21,895°𝐶
𝑇𝐹 =
492.22
𝑇𝐹 = 44.482°𝐶
