RUNNING FOR THEIR LIVES
Running is a great way to keep fit. We asked four people to tell us about their
experiences.
A. Sue has always been sporty, but now she finds that running is her main
exercise. ‘There’s no need to pay for a gym, and the only equipment you need is a
good pair of running shoes. There are no excuses – you just put on your tracksuit,
warm up and off you go. Bad weather puts some people off, but not me. I can run
in snow with special spikes on my shoes.’ Sue is always pushing herself harder and
has started hill running recently. ‘It’s really difficult at first, but running up hills is
excellent training. It makes your legs very strong. Even going downhill is not as
easy as it might seem; you have to keep your body upright and not go too fast or
brake too much. I’ve taken part in hill running races and I’m really pleased with my
progress.’
B. Jack took up running two years ago, but he didn’t enjoy it until he tried running
without shoes. ‘It’s surprising how easy it is to run barefoot once you get used to it.
The human body was not designed for shoes, and you run in a different way when
you are barefoot – the ball of your foot, the part just behind your big toe, hits the
ground first. If you have shoes on, the back of your foot hits the ground hard,
which is bad for your body. Running without shoes is much better for you. I started
running barefoot along the beach and went on to run through fields and on soft
ground. Now I can even run barefoot on concrete, which is good because I live in
New York City. You have to watch where you are stepping of course because you
don’t have shoes to protect you.
C. Simon says that running has changed his life. He can run a distance of 400
meters faster than most of his friends at the running track, although he only took
up the sport a few years ago. He is hoping to improve his speed enough to enter
international competitions and has ambitions to break records. This would be an
achievement for any young person, but the amazing thing about Simon is that he

has never had legs. ‘When I run, I wear artificial legs which were specially designed
for me and my sport. They are lighter than the ones I wear for walking and I can
run as fast as many able-bodied athletes. Running is my life; it’s such a great
feeling!’
D. Clare has just returned from a thirty-kilometer run. She’s been preparing for the
Athens Marathon for about five months. ‘You have to build up the distances slowly.
My trainer’s advice is to increase the distance by no more than ten percent each
week. I started off running just a few kilometers a week, and now I’m running
about 64 kilometers a week. I had a lot of difficulty at first with sore feet, and I
need to buy new running shoes every other month. I am always careful with food. I
will be having a lot of carbohydrates, like cereal and pasta, in the week before the
race, as this is supposed to help the body keep going.’ This will be the first time
she has run a marathon. ‘I’m so excited. I’m hoping to complete it in under four
hours, but even if I don’t, I know it will be the most wonderful experience.
