CD 49 Dip in NS (15) 1st Semester Examanation MMMC

Practical Navigation Time allowed:3hrs( Attempt all questions)total marks-100 Pass marks-70.

Set(A)

Change the followings:

1. (a) Gyro course 177* G , Gyro Error 1*low , Find True Course.

(b) Compass Course 357* C,Dev 5* E, Var 7 * W , Find True Course.

(c) True Course 270* T , Dev 1* W , Var 5* W , Find Compass Course.

(d) Steering Compass Course 045* C , Dev 1* E , Var 5* W, Leeway 7* , NW’ly Wind , Find
LWT.

(e) Course to make good 300*T, Leeway 5*, N’lyWind ,Var 5* E , Dev 2* W , Find Compass
course to steer counteract the wind. (20 Marks)

2. Find Compass course to steer and gyro course to steer and distance to steer from
position A :35* 12’ N 178* 12’ W To arrive position B : 37*06’ N 177* 00’ E, Compass
error 7* W and Gyro error 1* High . By using plane sailing. (20 marks)

3. From position Lat 47* 30’ S , Long 00* 07’ W , a vessel steered on 137 * by gyro , Gyro
error 3* low for distance 1370 miles. Find arrival position of ship.(20 marks)

4. (a) From position latitude 45*45’N longitude 179*55’E , a vessel steered on 090*T for
356miles. Find her arrival position.

5. (b) Find gyro course and distance to steer from latitude 7 ̊ 30 ́ S long 12 ̊ W to latitude
13 ̊ 30 ́ N longitude 12 ̊ W if gyro error is 2 ̊ high (20 marks)

6/ Find by mercator' principle, gyro course and distance to steer from 06 ̊ 00 ́ N 079 ̊ 00 W

to 38 ̊ 00́ S 179 ̊ 00 ́ E if gyro error is 1 ̊ high . If vessel speed is 12knots find also steaming
time required . (20 marks)

SET (B)
1. (a) It is wished to make good of a course 046 * T in a NW wind. Find the compass course
to steer if leeway is 5*, Var 6 * E, dev 2* W.

(b) Steering WNW by compass in a northerly wind the leeway was 4*, var 11* W, Dev 6* E,
Find the leeway track.

(c) True bearing of the sun at sunrise was calculated to be 095* T, A compass bearing was
observed to be 110* C. If the var was 5*E, find the Dev for the compass for the ship’s head.

2.(a)Find the compass course and distance to steer from 50* 20’ N 6*00’ W to 50* 20’ N 49* 30’ W
Var 22* E, Dev 12* W

(b) Find arrival position after steering on 181 ̊ by gyro which is 1 ̊ high for distance 1350 miles from
position latitude 44 ̊ 20 ́ N long 120 ̊ 30 ́ W . (20 marks)

2. A vessel left 52*50’ S 81* 10’ W and sailed on a compass course N 23* W for2600 miles.
( var 2 ̊ E, dev 5 ̊ W ) Find the position arrived at.(20 marks)

3. Find by plane sailing, gyro course to steer and distance to steer from position latitude
44*20’N longitude 2*30’W to arrive a position latitude 30*25’N longitude 1*50’E. Gyro
error is 2* High.(20 marks)

5. Find by mercator' principle, gyro course and distance to steer from 40 ̊ 18 ́ N 100 ̊ 20́ W

to 68 ̊ 00́ S 140 ̊ 00 ́ E if gyro error is 1 ̊ high . If vessel speed 12 knots ,find also steaming
time require . (20 marks)

SET (C)

1. (a)Find T.Co. to steer by using C.Co. 359* deviation 12* W , Variation 2* E.

(b)Find Gyro Co. to steer by using C.Co. 001 , Deviation 4* W , Variation 1* W , Gyro Error
3* high
(c)Find C.Co. to steer to make good on 222* T , Leeway 5* Southerly Wind , C.E 5* E (d)Find
deviation for ship’s head by using C.bearing of a light house 111*C and T.Bearing of same
light house 107* T, Variation 1* W.

(e) Find LWT if steering C.Co. 180*C , C.E 5*E and Westerly Wind causing 4* leeway.(20
marks)

2. Find Arrival position of a ship after steering on 030* by Gyro compass , which is 2* low
for distance 238 miles From Lat 15*00’N Long 93*20’E (20 marks)
3. Find Compass Co. to Steer and Distance to steer along the Rhumb line by Mercator
sailing from position X:06* 00’ N , 79* 00’ W to Position Y: lat 38* 00’ S , long 179* 00’ E,
Deviation 5* E , Variation 1* w.(15 marks)
4. (a) Find arrival position of a ship after steering on 268*by gyro which is 2* low for a
distance 455miles from position latitude 38*S longitude 179*55’W.(b) Find gyro course
and distance to steer from latitude 50 ̊20́́ ́ N. 6 ̊ 00 ́ W to latitude 11 ̊ 20 ́N longitude 6 ̊
W
if gyro error is 2 ̊ low . (20 marks)

5. Find arrival position of a ship after steering on 333 ̊ by gyro compass which is 2 ̊ high for distance

1245 miles from position latitude 32 ̊ 20 ́ S longitude 178 ̊ 20 ́ W . (20 marks )

At noon 15th September , vessel 's position was in lat 50*28' N long
179*40'W,then ship steered on 204*T at speed15knots for 10hours. [1]Find her
arrival DR after 10hrs[DR 10pm].At 10PM , vessel 's fix position was found by GPS
to be in lat 48*05'N long 178*45'E. Find [2] Set and drift of current [3] Course and
distance made good, find also speed made good.[use plane sailing]
3/Two vessel MV. MMMC and MV. MMU are to meet in position Lat 44*20'S long 100*40'W for
replenishment operation.Now they are in following positions:

MV MMMC lat 41*20'S long 100*40'W

MV MMU lat 44*20'S Long 80*55'W

Find TCo and distance to steer for each vessel to reach rendezvous [meeting position].

5/On the morning of 5th October at 0700hour local time , own vessel 's position was in lat
2*21'N long 5*14'W, a distress message was received from a vessel explosion occured onboard
in position Lat 1*47'S Long 3*20'W , need of assistance. Then master of your ship ordered to
render immediate assistance . Find True course to steer and required maximum speed to
reach distressed vessel in 10hours by using Traverse Table.
5/At noon a ship was in position latitude 49* 40’ S longitude. 175* 10’ E Ship then
steamed:-

Noon-8 p.m S 40 W 12 knots 5*E 17*E

8 pm to 4 am S 62* W 15 knots 2*E 17*E

4am to noon S75* W 10 knots 1*W 18*E

Find ship’s estimated position at end of day allowing for a current setting 220 T at 1.5
knots throughout. Also find course and distance made good from noon to noon. (20 marks)

5/At noon ship position was in position 47* 13’ N 157* 23’ E , then she steered following
courses:

At Noon, Set Compass Co. N 17* W , Var 4*E , Dev 6*W, speed 12knots

At 1800hrs, Altered Compass course N35*E , Var 5* E Dev 7* E speed 10 knots

At 2300hrs ,Altered compass course N 11*W , Var 5*E, Dev 5*E , speed 15 knots until
midnight.

. During the run, current was estimated to set 190*T for drift 15 miles. Find EP at midnight
and Course and distance made good from noon to midnight.(20 marks)
