Method Statement
METHOD STATEMENT FOR INSTALLATION OF CATHODIC PROTECTION
CABLE ATTACHMENT TO PIPELINE
Cable attachments to the pipeline shall be made using exothermit welding process.
The thermit weld connection should be made using the following procedure:
a. Only approved equipment shall be used and safety equipment should be in place.
b. The operator shall be adequately trained in the use of the equipment.
c. The connection location shall be confirm using Route & Profile and Welding book if
necessary.
d. The pipe coating area where the mould sits shall be expose and to be thoroughly
cleaned by power wire brushing and roughening with a coarse cut file.
e. Care shall be taken to ensure that the mould and pipe surface is clean and dry.
f. The pipeline monitoring cable shall be 10 mm sq. PVC/PVC single core copper
conductor with black insulation. If any negative return back from TRU (ICCP) cable
need to attach to the pipeline, the 35 mm sq. PVC/PVC single core copper conductor
shall be used.
g. The thermit weld mould shall be positioned so that the fixed cable shall lay parallel to
the longitudinal axis of the pipeline.
h. Neither cable nor mould moving prior to firing the charge to ensure good attachment
between cable and pipe.
i. The attachment weld shall be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s
instructions as in Appendix IV.
j. On completion of welding, the joint shall be examined visually for satisfactory by flow
of filler all round the joint. The joint shall then be mechanically tested by tapping the
joint with a sharp blow from a copper headed hammer. All the slag and the rough
edges shall be removed.
k. The electrical resistance of the joint shall be not more than 1.0 ohm measured from
the pipe to the cable.
l. On completion, the connection shall be coated using a handycap in accordance with
the manufacturer’s instructions.
m. The cables shall be wrapped using a cable tie with the distance of 500 mm from
thermit weld connection.
n. If there any jointing between cable need to be made, line taps shall be used and the
join shall be reinstate using densyl mastic, 3M butyl rubber tape and PVC electrical
tape.
o. The backfilling material / soil must be free of rock or sharp debris.
p. Thermo weld done at each location shall be carried out by installation report and
verified by owner.
TEST POST INSTALLATION
The test post shall be installed in accordance with the type of test post selected by
owner. Test post shall be non metallic test post such as Zap Gard or mild steel type test
post. The Zap Gard test post shall be of high impact strength and consist of a conduit and
a terminal board inside.
Alignment of test post at each location shall be installed adjacent to the pipeline. Test
post height from existing ground level shall be 1200 mm and stabilized with concrete
support with dimension of 300 X 300 X 300 mm.
All cables shall cut to the correct length and lugged and terminated at the correct brass
studs. The cables shall be easily identified with a permanent marker having the following
wording:
