PART 6 READING (5 questions)
Read the blog and choose the best answer for each question. (5 questions)
Sue's Blog!
I've heard from several of my readers this week that they found my blog last week hard to understand. They are
non-native speakers of English, so I can see why this sometimes happens, although I always try really hard to use
simple language! I think the problem is that I used too many expressions which we use in everyday communication
– I sometimes forget they are difficult if your first language isn't English.
People have also asked me recently if I can suggest clever ways to improve their English. I'm sure all of you know
about smartphone apps and free online lessons, although some of these are not very good. You probably also know
the benefits of speaking with British and American friends online.
People often suggest watching YouTube channels, films and television programmes in English. But since the
language in most films and in YouTube stuff is too difficult, only watch English TV programmes. And don't even
try those if they don't have subtitles in English – you know, the words written on the screen. I'm recommending
this because the sound of words in English is sometimes very different from the way they look. But if you can hear
and see the words at the same time, your brain can make the connection. Then, when you hear a word in the future,
you know how it is written and the other way round.
36. Why did some readers of Sue's blog have problems last week?
A. Sue used a lot of difficult expressions. B. English is not their first language.
C. Sue did not realise that she had non-native readers. D. Sue wrote about difficult topics.
37. Which of these ideas for improving English does Sue NOT talk about in paragraph 2?
A. Installing items from the app store. B. Practising with native speakers.
C. Signing up at a language centre. D. Using online resources.
38. What does "those" mean in paragraph 3?
A. TV programmes in English. B. TV programmes in
English with subtitles.
C. YouTube channels and films in English. D. YouTube channels and films in English with subtitles.
39. What does Sue recommend watching in paragraph 3?
A. Films and television programmes in English.
B. Films in English.
C. TV programmes in English which have the written words as well.
D. She doesn't recommend anything.
40. Which of these pairs of words is an example of Sue's point about English in paragraph 3?
A. Though and although. B. Through and though. C. Through and threw. D. Their and there.
