Jury Requirements

FRESHMAN YEAR

Repertoire and Studies


Texts:
• Ted Reed: Progressive Steps to Syncopation
• John Riley: The Art of Bop Drumming
• Steve Houghton: Studio and Big Band Drumming
• Tom Morgan: The Jazz Drummer’s Reading Workbook

Repertoire:
Selected tunes from the Level 1 - Jazz Repertoire List.
• Know the form of the tune and be able to sing the melody.
• Know the name the tune upon hearing a recording of it
Studies:
Essential bebop time feels, big band chart reading/interpretation

Jazz Transcriptions:
Selected Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones or Art Blakey timekeeping transcription

Memorized Tune List:


In a three ring binder, compile in alphabetical order twenty tunes that have memorized during
the Freshman year of study. Include the lead sheets and a typed index of the tunes.

Fall Jury: (all material to be performed from memory)


• Two contrasting tunes from the Level 1 - Jazz Repertoire List.
Count off the tune, play behind the melody and solo over the form.
• One tune from the student’s “tune list” to be called randomly by the jazz jury panel. Count off the
tune, play behind the melody and solo over the form
• Transcription: Perform and turn in your written jazz transcription. Play along with the original CD
(recording) of the solo you transcribed.

Spring Jury: (all material to be performed from memory)


• Two contrasting tunes from the Level 1 - Jazz Repertoire List.

• One tune from the student’s “tune list” to be called randomly by the jazz jury panel. Count off the

SOPHOMORE YEAR

Repertoire:
Selected tunes from the Level 2 - Jazz Repertoire List.
• Know the form of the tune and be able to sing the melody.
• Know the name the tune upon hearing a recording of it
Studies:
Bebop soloing, brush work

Jazz Transcriptions:
Selected Art Blakey or Max Roach solo transcription

Memorized Tune List:

the Sophomore year of study. Include the lead sheets and a typed index of the tunes.

• Know the form of the tune and be able to sing the melody.
• Know the name the tune upon hearing a recording of it

Studies:
Motivic soloing, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian time feels and soloing, stylistic diversity

Jazz Transcriptions:
Selected Selected Philly Joe Jones or Roy Haynes solos

Memorized Tune List:


In a three ring binder, compile in alphabetical order twenty tunes that have memorized during
the Junior year of study. Include the lead sheets and a typed index of the tunes.

Fall Jury: (all material to be performed from memory)


• Two contrasting tunes from the Level 3 - Jazz Repertoire List.
Count off the tune, play behind the melody and solo over the form.
• One tune from the student’s “tune list” to be called randomly by the jazz jury panel. Count off the

SENIOR YEAR
Emphasis is on the required full recital that is to be given at any time during the senior year. This recital
shall consist of 50-60 minutes of music. In order to be approved for public performance, students must
first receive a satisfactory evaluation by members of the jazz studies faculty by presenting a recital
hearing. Students should plan on presenting two or three of the songs proposed for their recital program,
including at least one original composition or arrangement. Students must schedule their recital hearing in
the semester that precedes the anticipated recital date. On the basis of the hearing, the faculty may elect to
approve or disapprove the recital for presentation. The recital hearing will take the place of the standard
end-of-the-semester jury, and lasts twenty minutes in duration.

Selected tunes from the Level 4 Jazz - Repertoire List.

• Know the name the tune upon hearing a recording of it

Studies:
Post-bop time functioning and solos, metric modulation, advanced time concepts and feels

Jazz Transcriptions:
Selected Tony Williams or Elvin Jones or Jack DeJohnette solos

Memorized Tune List:


In a three ring binder, compile in alphabetical order twenty tunes that have memorized during
the Senior year of study. Include the lead sheets and a typed index of the tunes.
