Executive Summary
This report explores the importance of written communication in the logistics industry,
with a focus on MZW Logistics. Through an interview with the company’s General
Manager for International Relations, it highlights how clear and effective written
communication—especially through email—helps in solving problems, managing crises,
and improving operations.
The report includes both primary insights from the interview and secondary research on
industry practices. A real-life case shared by the interviewee shows how an email trail
helped trace the root of a documentation error, demonstrating the practical value of written
records in fast-moving logistics environments.
Overall, the report connects theory with real-world practice, showing how strong
communication skills support decision-making, accountability, and professional growth in
the logistics sector.
Introduction
Effective communication plays a crucial role in the success of any business environment.
In the logistics industry, where timing, accuracy, and coordination are vital, effective and
efficient communication ensures the smooth flow of goods as well as quick problem
solving.
The main purpose of this field report is to explore the role and implications of business
communication in the logistics industry, specifically focusing on MZW Logistics in
Pakistan. By gaining insights from an interview with the General Manager at MZW
Logistics, this report examines how communication concepts work in practice. The
objective of this report is to explore the importance of communication in this sector and
understand the skills required to succeed in it.
Industry Research and Its Competitive Landscape
The logistics and transportation industry is a vital component of Pakistan’s economy,
supporting both foreign and domestic trade. Transport and storage collectively contribute
about 10.7% to the GDP of Pakistan and provide jobs to 6% of the population of Pakistan.
Pakistan’s logistics landscape is shaped by a handful of major players, both local and
international. Local names like TCS (Tranzum Courier Service), Leopards Courier, and
M&P Courier have spent years building out vast networks that cover every corner of the
country, making them the go-to choice for most parcel and freight needs. Among them,
TCS is recognized as the market leader.
On the global side, companies such as DHL, FedEx (through its partner Gerry’s), and UPS
have carved out niches of their own, particularly in handling high-value, cross-border
shipments. Their focus on premium and international freight reflects the extra hurdles they
face here, from infrastructure to regulations. Meanwhile, Pakistan Post continues to serve
more remote areas, and a variety of smaller specialists (like SpeeDeX and Call Courier)
fill in gaps in niche markets.
Major Logistics Hubs, Infrastructure, and Future Outlook
Pakistan’s trade routes have created major logistics hubs in key cities. Karachi and Port
Qasim handle 95% of container traffic, while Gwadar Port, under CPEC, is rising as a
regional gateway. The Karachi–Lahore–Peshawar corridor supports most road freight, and
Lahore–Islamabad hosts key dry ports and air cargo centers. Together, Karachi, Lahore,
Islamabad/Rawalpindi, and Peshawar form the core of Pakistan’s logistics network, with
infrastructure built to support national and regional trade.

Organizational Review
The organizational structure is not for public view due to confidentiality. However,
according to Mr. Ovais (General Manager), he reports directly to the CEO and has several
teams working under his supervision.
Interview Methodology
A semi-structured interview was conducted with the General Manager at MZW Logistics,
via Zoom. Questions were shared in advance to allow preparation and transparency. The
discussion focused on company operations, strategic practices, and crisis management,
highlighting how effective and efficient communication played a crucial role in
maintaining operations and resolving challenges. Notes were manually taken to capture
key insights while allowing flexibility during the conversation.
Website Review
The MZW Logistics website (Figure 1 & 2) presents a clean and professional layout with
straightforward navigation, making it easy for users to access key sections such as About
Us, Services, and Contact. The tone of the content is formal and informative, aligning well
with industry standards. While the website is responsive and accessible across devices, it
could be improved by incorporating more engaging elements such as client testimonials,
clearer calls to action, and interactive visuals. Additionally, enhancing content depth—
especially around service details—would help build greater credibility and better inform
potential clients. Overall, the site communicates reliability but could benefit from more
dynamic and informative features to fully showcase the company’s capabilities.
Interviewee Profile
The interview was conducted with Mr. Ovais Ahmad Siddiqui, the General Manager of
MZW Logistics (Pvt) Ltd. He possesses extensive experience in logistics and supply chain
management. His strategic position within the organization offered informed perspectives
on operational processes, crisis management practices, and industry-specific challenges.
Career Journey
Mr. Ovais’ began his academic journey in the field of accounting and later pursued
Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Karachi. Although he initially aspired to
pursue a career in accounting, a fascination with aviation and supply chain operations
gradually redirected his path toward the logistics industry, specifically air freight. His
professional career began with a role in supply chain logistics at Lexon Group, where he
gained practical experience and industry exposure. He joined MZW Logistics in 2015 as
an Export Manager and later got promoted to General Manager for the International
Division in 2022. During the interview, he expressed his future interest in switching to the
sales department. He believes that his strengths in communication, discipline, and patience
would serve him well in client-facing roles. Furthermore, he said that his managerial
experience gives him an upper hand on the leadership and strategic insight required to grow
within the organization.
Interview Analysis
The interview discussion revolved around the role of effective written communication in
managing operations and resolving crises in the logistics industry. Mr. Ovais pointed out
that email communication tends to offer more clarity and accountability as compared to
verbal communication. He said that written messages tend to neutralize misunderstandings
in tone that are more likely to arise in face-to-face communication, particularly in stressful
situations.
One incident he shared involved a crisis where an incorrect shipping document was sent
by a client’s agent via email. The document was unknowingly forwarded across several
team members without being reviewed, ultimately resulting in a shipment delay at the
clearance stage. However, the email trail became a crucial tool in tracing the error and
identifying where the oversight occurred. While the mistake was collective, the written
record allowed the team to resolve the issue efficiently and use it as a learning point for
future documentation protocols.
He emphasized that maintaining clear, concise, and well documented email has been
crucial not only for smooth operations, but also for protecting the company’s position. This
shows how effective communication plays a vital role in the success of the business. At the
end of the interview, he told how important it is to maintain patience, discipline,
adaptability, and commitment to goals to succeed in such organisations.
