Determination of Normal Consistency of Cement with Vicat Apparatus
Introduction: The amount of water content that brings the cement paste to a standard condition
of wetness is called “normal consistency”. It has a marked effect upon the time of set as well
as upon other properties of cement. The paste at normal consistency is fairly stiff and is used
only for the determination of time of set and soundness of cement. It is necessary to fix the
quantity of water to be mixed in cement while experimenting on it.
The normal consistency (Normally 26-33%) of a cement paste is defined as that consistency of
a cement paste is defined as that consistency which will permit a v-cat plunger having diameter
10 mm and 50 mm in length to penetrate to a depth of 33-35 mm from the top of the mould.
Consistency: A certain minimum quantity of water is required to be mixed with cement so as
to complete chemical reaction between water and cement. Less water than this quantity would
not complete chemical reaction thus resulting in reduction of strength and more water would
increase water cement ratio and so would reduce its strength. Thus correct proportion of water
to cement is required to be known to achieve proper strength while using cement in structure.
Gauging Time: The period observed from the time water is added to cement for making
cement paste till commencing the filling of mould of Vicat Apparatus in this test (3-5 Minutes).
Significance:
▪ Establishes the water-cement ratio for desired paste consistency.
▪ Regulates initial and final setting times of concrete.
▪ Prevents issues like poor strength, segregation, and bleeding in concrete.
▪ Results in uniform and reliable concrete quality.
▪ Minimizes risk of excessive water content.
Apparatus:
▪ Balance
▪ Glass Graduates
▪ Vicat Apparatus:
Procedure:
▪ Sample Preparation:
✓ Collect 300 grams of cement that has passed through a 90-micron sieve.
▪ Water Measurement:
✓ Measure 75 grams of water, which is 25% of the weight of the cement.
▪ Mixing and Timing:
✓ Begin timing as you start mixing the measured water with the collected cement.
▪ Mould Filling:
✓ Fill the Vicat's mould with the mixed cement paste.
▪ Tamping:
✓ Tamp the cement paste in the mould manually using jerking motions to
eliminate voids and ensure uniform compaction.
▪ Needle Penetration:
✓ Position the mould under the Vicat's plunger.
✓ Release the plunger from the top of the mould to let it penetrate freely to the
bottom of the paste.
▪ Evaluation of Consistency:
✓ Observe the depth of penetration by the plunger into the cement paste.
✓ If the needle penetrates between 33 to 35 mm from the top surface of the mould,
consider the water content to be at normal consistency for that specific cement.
Note: Total procedure should be completed within 5 mins after counting the time.
