Form 3 summary model answer

The community felt exhausted by the relentlessness of the

storms and worried about what might happen next. They felt
frustrated that there was no one to blame but coped as best
they could. People prepared themselves by stocking up on food,
buying extra tools as well as candles and batteries in case of
power cuts. Residents would stay inside as much as possible,
getting up early to check the snow levels while wearing extra
layers of clothes for warmth. People rushed about doing all
sorts of things like clearing snow from front steps. (93 words)
Writer’s effects model answer
In paragraph 2 the writer conveys the idea that the heat was
brutal and suppressive, seemingly intent on causing harm and
abusing the landscape with its power. The phrase “violence of
the heat” shows us how the temperature was unbearable and
seemingly hostile, comparable to a malevolent force with bad
intentions. The idea of the heat being violent and causing harm
is sustained through the phrase “seemed to bruise the whole
earth” – the idea that there is a “bruise” or a visible injury
suggests the abusive nature of the heat and the damage being
done to the landscape.
