Tutorial problem: Circular motion, Forces, Torque and rotations, Fluids

Prepared by: Dr MB Dubazane

Module: 4PHY111 Date: 15/04/25

1. Find the net torque on the wheel in the figure below about the axle through O if
a = 10.0 cm and b = 25.0 cm

2. An electric motor exerts a constant torque of  =10 N.m on a grindstone

mounted on its shaft, the moment of inertia of the grindstone is I = 2.0 kg.m2.
If the system starts from rest, what is power delivered by the motor?

3. At an instant, a particle of mass 2.0 kg has a position of 𝑟⃗ = (9.0𝑖̂ + 15𝑗̂) 𝑚

and acceleration of 𝑎⃗ = (−3.0𝑖̂) 𝑚/𝑠 2 . What is the net torque on the particle at
this instant about the point having the position vector 𝑟⃗ = 9.0𝑖̂ 𝑚?
4. A flywheel with a diameter of 1.20 m is rotating at an angular speed of 200
rev/min. What constant angular acceleration will increase the wheel’s angular
speed to 1000 rev/min in 60 s?

5. A particle is acted on by two torques about the origin: 𝜏⃗1 has a magnitude of
2.0 𝑁. 𝑚 and is directed in the positive direction of the x-axis, and 𝜏⃗2 has a
magnitude of 4.0 𝑁. 𝑚 and is directed in the negative direction of the y- axis. In
𝑑𝑙⃗
unit-vector notation, find where 𝑙⃗ is the angular momentum of the particle
𝑑𝑡
about the origin.

6. A particle moves through an xyz coordinate system while a force acts on the
particle. When the particle has the position vector 𝑟 = (2.00 𝑚)𝑖̂−(3.00 𝑚)𝑗̂+(2.00
𝑚)𝑘̂, the force is given by 𝐹 = 𝐹𝑥 𝑖̂ + (7.00 𝑁)𝑗̂ − (6.00 𝑁)𝑘̂ and the
corresponding torque about the origin is 𝜏 =(4.00 𝑁.𝑚)𝑖̂+(2.00 𝑁.𝑚)𝑗̂−(1.00
𝑁.𝑚)𝑘̂. Determine 𝐹𝑥

7. In unit-vector notation, what is the torque about the origin on a jar of jalapeño
peppers located at coordinates (3.0 m, -2.0 m, 4.0 m) due to force:
(a) 𝐹⃗1 = (3.0 𝑁)𝑖̂ − (4.0 𝑁)𝑗̂ + (5.0 𝑁)𝑘̂ and,

(b) force 𝐹⃗2 = (−3.0 𝑁)𝑖̂ − (4.0 𝑁)𝑗̂ − (5.0 𝑁)𝑘̂ , and

(c) the vector sum of 𝐹⃗1 and 𝐹⃗2 ?

(d) Repeat part (c) for the torque about the point with coordinates (3.0 m, 2.0
m, 4.0 m).

8. In the instant of Fig., two particles move in an xy plane. Particle P1 has mass
of 6.5 kg and speed 𝑣⃗1 = 2.2 𝑚/𝑠, and it is at distance 𝑑1 = 1.5 𝑚 from point
O. Particle P2 has mass of 3.1 kg and speed 𝑣⃗2 = 3.6 𝑚/𝑠, and it is at distance
𝑑2 = 2.8 𝑚 from point O. What are the (a) magnitude and (b) direction of the
net angular momentum of the two particles about O?

9.

Hydrostatics

10. A piston of cross-sectional area a is used in a hydraulic press to exert a small

force of magnitude f on the enclosed liquid. A connecting pipe leads to a larger
piston of cross-sectional area A (Figure below). (a) What force magnitude F will
the larger piston sustain without moving? (b) If the piston diameters are 3.80
cm and 53.0 cm, what force magnitude on the small piston will balance a 20.0
kN force on the large piston?

11. A block of wood floats in fresh water with two-thirds of its volume V submerged
and in oil with 0.90V submerged.
Find the density of (a) the wood and (b) the oil.
12. The spring of the pressure gauge shown in Figure has a force constant of
1250 N/m, and the piston has a diameter of 1.2 cm. As the gauge is lowered
is into water in a lake, what change in depth causes the piston to move in by
0.750 cm?

13. Calculate the hydrostatic difference in blood pressure between the brain and
the foot in a person of height 1.83 m. The density of blood is 1.06 × 103 𝑘𝑔/
𝑚3 .

14. In Figure below, an open tube of length L = 1.8 m and cross-sectional area A =
4.6 cm2 is fixed to the top of a cylindrical barrel of diameter D = 1.2 m and
height H = 1.8 m. The barrel and tube are filled with water (to the top of the
tube). Calculate the ratio of the hydrostatic force on the bottom of the barrel to
the gravitational force on the water contained in the barrel. Why is that ratio
not equal to 1.0? (You need not consider the atmospheric pressure.)

Hydrodynamics
15. The intake in Figure below has cross-sectional area of 0.74 m2 and water flow
at 0.40 m/s. At the outlet, distance D = 180 m below the intake, the cross-
sectional area is smaller than at the intake and the water flows out at 9.5 m/s
into equipment. What is the pressure difference between inlet and outlet?
16. Two streams merge to form a river. One stream has a width of 8.2 m, depth of
3.4 m, and current speed of 2.3 m/s. The other stream is 6.8 m wide and 3.2
m deep, and flows at 2.6 m/s. If the river has width 10.5 m and speed 2.9 m/s,
what is its depth?

17. Figure below shows a stream of water flowing through a hole at depth h = 10
cm in a tank holding water to height H = 40 cm. At what distance x does the
stream strike the floor?
