Blood Relation

Coded Relation
In this section, the relations among the members of the family are represented by specific codes or symbols
such as +, $, *, &, #, @, ! etc. The answers are obtained by decoding the given equation of relation.

Example:

Directions: Study the following information carefully to answer the given questions:

If 'P @ Q' means 'P is the father of Q'

If 'P # Q' means 'P is the mother of Q'

If 'P + Q' means 'P is the brother of Q'

If 'P $ Q' means 'P is the brother in law of Q'

If 'P % Q' means 'P is the husband of Q'

If "P & Q' means 'P is the sister of Q'

Question:

From which of the following expression it is said that W is aunt of T?

Options:

a) X % Y # W & U % S & T.

b) X % Y # W & U % S # T

c) W % Y # X & U % S & T

d) X % Y # W + U % S & T

e) None of these

Solution:

Let us first decode the given symbols and then draw a family tree.

P is
Symbol @ # + & $ %
Meaning Father Mother Brother Sister Brother in law Husband
a

Now draw a family tree using the following notations:

By using statement - 1

1) X % Y # W & U % S & T - X is husband of Y, Y is mother of W, W is sister of U, U is husband of S, S is sister of

T.

In this statement, we can clearly see that W is not aunt of T.

By using statement - 2

2) X % Y # W & U % S # T - X is husband of Y, Y is mother of W, W is sister of U, U is father of S, S is Mother of

T.

In this statement, we can clearly see that W is aunt of T.

Answer:

Hence, X % Y # W & U % S # T is correct.

Now, we have the correct answer, so no need to check the further options

Question:

In the given expression 'Z # S % L, S + R # M, I % K # T % R' how R related to I?

Options:

a) Daughter

b) Daughter-in-law

c) Sister

d) Sister-in-law

e) Son-in-law

Solution:

Let us first decode the given symbols and then draw a family tree.

P is
Symbol @ # + & $ %

Of Q

Now draw a family tree using the following notations:

'Z # S % L, S + R # M, I % K # T % R' - Z is mother S, S is husband of L, S is brother of R, R is mother of M, I is

husband of K, K is mother T, T is husband of R.

In this statement, we can clearly see that R is daughter-in-law of I.

Answer:

Hence, R is daughter-in-law of I.

Blood Relation with Variable

In this kind of questions, Blood relation of the people is given and along with that one or two variables is also
given, (Age, Fruits, Color, Profession).

We use all this information of Blood Relations and variables provided in the question to draw a family tree
diagram along with the variable.

Example:

There are seven members in a family Rinu, Sinu, Chinu, Priya, Rohan, Tinu, and Sonu. Four of them are
females and the family has three-generation. The family consists of two married couples, three daughters,
and two mothers. Each member has a different profession, i.e. Lawyer, Doctor, Engineer, Technician,
Mechanic, Teacher, and Banker. Sinu's husband works as a Lawyer. The person who is Engineer is the brother
-in-law of the mechanic. Priya is the brother of chinu, who is the mother of Tinu. The person who is a banker
is the granddaughter of a Doctor. Rinu is the father of chinu. Chinu works as a technician. Rohan is the sibling
of Tinu. Sonu is sinu's son-in-law.

Question:-

Who among the following is teacher?

Options:

a) Rohan

b) Tinu

c) Sonu

d) Either 1 or 2

e) None of the above

Solution:

Persons: Rinu, Sinu, Chinu, Priya, Rohan, Tinu, and Sonu.

Professions: Lawyer, Doctor, Engineer, Technician, Mechanic, Teacher, and Banker.

1). Priya is the brother of chinu, who is the mother of Tinu.

2). Rinu is the father of chinu.

3). The family consists of two married couples.

4). Sonu is sinu's s son-in-law.

5). Rohan is a sibling of Tinu.

6). The family consists of four female members, three daughters, and two mothers.

7). Sinu's husband works as a lawyer.

8). The person who is an engineer is the brother-in-law of a mechanic. (As from here engineer might be
Priya / Sonu and similarly, Mechanic might be Sonu / Priya. as both are brother-in-laws of each other.)

9). Chinu works as a technician.

10). The person who is a banker is the granddaughter of Doctor. (Here we can say Sinu is a doctor, but we
can't determine who is a banker. The banker might be Tinu or Rohan.)

11). The teacher is left, similarly, as Banker, Teacher might be Tinu or Rohan.

The final figure:

As, from the diagram we can see that it is not definite who is the teacher, so either Tinu or Rohan can be
teacher.

Answer:

Hence, Either Tinu or Rohan is a Teacher.

Common Mistake
While attempting such kind of questions, often students consider that Tinu is Teacher and Rohan is Banker,
but this is wrong, unless the definite information is not given in the question we will not consider their
profession definitely.

Blood Relation with Seating Arrangement

In this topic, in the question along with the blood relation, seating arrangement is also given of the family
members.

The family members may sit around a circular table or in a linear row or around a square/rectangular table
and blood relation among them is given.

We need to use this information and draw a family tree diagram and also arrange them in the seating
arrangement.

Sometimes along with Blood Relation and Seating arrangement, variable is also given and we have to take
that variable also in the consideration.

The variable may be (Age, Color, Fruit, Profession, Food etc).

Example:

Direction: Read the information carefully and answer the following questions.

There are eight family members M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, and T. All of them are sitting around a circular table facing
towards the center. They belong to three different generations. There are three married couple and two are
unmarried.

R, who is the husband of P sits second to the right of his wife. M and O are the children of R. M is not an
immediate neighbor of P. There is only one person sitting between O and his niece S, but that person is not
S’s father. Q is unmarried, who sits third to the right of his uncle M. Q is neither opposite nor an immediate
neighbor of his father. S is not an immediate neighbor of her aunt N. O and his sister-in-law are immediate
neighbors.

Question:-

Who among the following is the father of S?

Options:

a) M

b) O

c) R

d) Q

e) Cannot be determined

Solution:

1) R, who is the husband of P sits second to the right of his wife.

2) M and O are children of R.

3) M is not an immediate neighbor of P.

4) Q is unmarried, who sits third to the right of his uncle M.

5) There is only one person sitting between O and his niece S.

6)O and his sister-in-law are immediate neighbors.

7) S is not an immediate neighbor of her aunt N.

Using the above statements, the family tree is as follows:

Using statements 1) to 4), we get the circular arrangement

7) O and his sister-in-law are immediate neighbors.

8) Q is neither opposite nor an immediate neighbor of his father.

9) There is only one person sitting between O and his niece S.

10) There is only one person sitting between O and his niece S, but that person is not S’s father. (This
condition eliminate case 2 and case 3)

The final arrangement:

Answer:

Hence, M is the father of S.
