Density Calculations

The document provides various calculations and applications of density, including how to determine density from mass and volume, and vice versa. It includes specific examples involving different materials such as gold, silver, iron, and wood, along with real-world applications like assessing the purity of gold and using the water displacement method. Additionally, it addresses concepts like floating and sinking based on density comparisons.

Density = mass / volume

1. Density Calculation
A bar of gold has a mass of 12.4 g and a volume of 642 cm³.
Calculate its density.
(Answer: ≈ 0.0193 g/cm³)

2. Volume from Density and Mass

A silver block has a density of 10.5 g/cm³ and a mass of 525 g.
What is its volume?
(Answer: 50 cm³)

3. Mass from Density and Volume

A piece of iron (density = 7.87 g/cm³) occupies 25 cm³. What is
its mass?
(Answer: 196.75 g)

4. Unit Conversion Challenge

A wooden cube has a volume of 0.5 liters. If the wood’s density
is 0.6 g/cm³, what is its mass in kilograms? Hint 1mL = 1cm3
Or liter to cm³ ( liter x1000)
(Answer: 0.3 kg)
5. Real-World Application
A crown’s mass is 1.2 kg, and its volume is 152 cm³. Is it pure
gold (density = 19.3 g/cm³)? HINT : 1kg = 1000 g
(Answer: No, density ≈ 7.89 g/cm³)

6. Water Displacement Method

A marble’s mass is 42 g. When submerged, it displaces water
from 200 mL to 215 mL. Find its density.
(Answer: 2.8 g/cm³)

7. Comparing Densities
Which has a greater mass: 50 cm³ of copper (8.96 g/cm³) or 60
cm³ of lead (11.34 g/cm³)?
(Answer: Lead, 680.4 g vs. 448 g)

8. Calculating Required Volume

How many cm³ of ethanol (density = 0.789 g/cm³) are needed
for a mass of 250 g?
(Answer: ≈ 316.86 cm³)

9. Floating or Sinking?
An object has a density of 0.92 g/cm³. Will it float in water?
Explain.
(Answer: Yes, less dense than water [1 g/cm³])
10. Average Density of a Mixture
200 g of sand (density = 2.65 g/cm³) is mixed with 300 g of
gravel (density = 2.75 g/cm³). What is the mixture’s average
density?
(Answer: ≈ 2.71 g/cm³)
