Narrative Report: Utilization of HAPAG/Gulayan sa Barangay Produce

Date: FEBRUARY 2, 2025

Introduction:

This report summarizes the progress and outcomes of the Barangay Gulayan sa Barangay
program, initiated on November 14, 2024. The program aimed to cultivate various
vegetables to supplement the barangay's needs and potentially generate additional income.

Planting and Growth:

On November 14, 2024, we planted eggplant, pechay (Chinese cabbage), squash, string
beans, chili peppers, tomatoes, okra, and other vegetables. Initially, the plants showed
promising growth and some yielded fruits. However, persistent heavy rains from November
to December significantly impacted the crops. Many plants died due to waterlogging and
disease.

Harvest and Yield:

Pechay was the first vegetable harvested due to its short growing cycle. We also harvested
some patola (sponge gourd) and eggplant, but the yield was lower than expected due to the
adverse weather conditions. Currently, squash is showing the most resilience to the rain and
provides a consistent harvest.

Benefits and Utilization:

The Barangay Gulayan sa Barangay program has yielded significant benefits:

- Cost Savings: The harvested vegetables have reduced the barangay's food expenses,
ensuring a readily available supply of fresh produce.

- Food Security: The program contributes to the food security of barangay personnel and
residents. Cooked meals incorporating the harvested vegetables are regularly provided.

- Community Support: We have been able to share some of the harvest with vulnerable
members of the community, such as senior citizens.

- Additional Income: A portion of the harvest was sold, and the proceeds were used to
purchase necessary supplies for the barangay hall and outpost.
Conclusion:

Despite the challenges posed by the prolonged rainfall, the Barangay Gulayan program has
proven to be a valuable initiative. The cost savings, improved food security, and community
support demonstrate its positive impact. We plan to adjust our planting strategies in the
future to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall, potentially through improved drainage and the
selection of more rain-resistant crops. We will continue to monitor the growth of the
remaining plants and implement necessary adjustments to maximize yield.

Hapag Sa Barangay Program Update

The Sangguniang Barangay has decided to temporarily postpone the planting of new
crops due to the persistent rainfall. The continuous wet weather conditions have
made it difficult to establish new plants, and the risk of crop failure is high.

We are closely monitoring the weather patterns and plan to resume planting once
the weather improves and the ground dries out. We will then allocate funds from the
barangay budget to purchase high-quality pesticides and fertilizers to ensure the
healthy growth of our crops. We also plan to expand the variety of vegetables
planted, adding additional species to diversify our harvest and provide a wider range
of produce for the community.

We appreciate the community's understanding and patience as we wait for the right
conditions to revitalize our "Gulayan sa Barangay " program.
