WORLDWIDE FASTENER STANDARD

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS OF THREADED FASTENERS WITH DRY FILM MICROENCAPSULATED

ADHESIVE COMPOUND APPLIED TO THE THREADS

1. SCOPE
This specification covers the performance of male threaded fasteners with dry film microencapsulated
adhesive compound applied to the thread.

1.1 LIMITATIONS
The adhesive bonds during initial installation and provides no bonding if the fastener is removed and
reinstalled.

Some torque control lubricants may affect adhesion of the compound to the threads. In those cases, it
may be advantageous to apply the adhesive material prior to the torque control lubricant. It is
recommended that the processing path be agreed between the fastener maker, surface finisher and
adhesive applicator to meet the Ford requirements.

2. REFERENCES
ISO 4032 Hexagon nuts, style 1 - Product grades A & B.

3. MICROENCAPSULATED ADHESIVE MATERIAL

Fasteners shall use the approved sources listed below. Information on adhesives and sealers can be found
on the Fastener Engineering website.

OMNITECHNIK PRECOTE 80 – PINK

OMNITECHNIK PRECOTE 85 - TURQUOISE
LOCTITE LTD. LOCTITE 2045 -- RED
3M CO. SCOTCH-GRIP 2353 -- BLUE
ND INDUSTRIES MICROSPHERES 593SG – GREEN

4. MICROENCAPSULATED ADHESIVE DIMENSIONS AND POSITION ON THREAD

Fasteners shall have a minimum of three full threads coated with the adhesive compound. The angle covered
by the adhesive compound shall be 360°. The first two full threads at the end of the fastener shall be free from
any compound. No compound shall be permitted on the thread runout, on the under head bearing face, or on
the plain shank of fasteners or paint-clearing feature.

The dimensions and position of the adhesive compound shall be as specified on the Ford drawing. Utility part
numbers shall be dimensioned per Figure 1. The recommended minimum location of the patch, c, defined
from the bearing surface or washer, if present is equal to 6P.

Not to be shown on Utility drawings.)
Figure 1:

For most applications any one of the approved adhesives is suitable and the above note facilitates global
availability and sourcing. For some applications a specific adhesive may need to be used and included in the
drawing note.

For example: For applications between 150 - 200 °C, revise the drawing note to:
PRECOTE 80 THREAD ADHESIVE PER WX 200

In special circumstances, an adhesive not on the approved list may be required. In those cases, this standard
may still be referenced and the drawing note revised accordingly listing the exceptions. For example
THREAD ADHESIVE PER WX 200 EXCEPT USE PRECOTE 30 AND X.X NM MIN BREAKAWAY.

5. NUTS
This standard does not include performance requirements or test methods for use on nuts. Use on nuts
may not achieve the minimum values listed due to lead in threads and length of run down. For drawings that
reference this standard only the approved adhesives apply. Nut drawings should specify the number of
lead-in threads that must be free of adhesive, typically 2-3. Additional application information in the notes
may include: Applied to full 360° of thread, Overspray is acceptable if it does not interfere with driving tool.

6. ROUTINE QUALITY CONTROL TESTING

Fasteners with the microencapsulated adhesive applied, taken from a production batch, must be screwed
into unplated, clean steel test nuts (to ISO 4032 with a 6H tolerance) until all the test nut threads are in
contact with the adhesive coated threads or the adhesive coated threads are all in contact with the test nut
threads. No clamp force shall be induced in either case. The assembly must then be cured for 24 hours at
20 °C. When a torque is applied to the fastener in the loosening direction, the adhesion break torque must
meet the requirements specified in Table 1 appropriate to the size of fastener being tested.
NOTE: A new nut must be used for each test.

Table 1 Adhesion Break Torques

Nominal Size Minimum Maximum
of Thread Adhesion Break Adhesion Break
Torque Nm Torque Nm
M5 1.5 5
M6 2 8
M8 4 24
M10 10 44
M12 15 80
M14 20 130
M16 30 160
M18 30 175
M20 40 190

7. INITIAL APPROVAL TESTING OF ADHESIVE COMPOUND

This testing is for initial qualification of the adhesive and not for part validation or quality control.

7.1 PREPARATION OF TEST ASSEMBLIES

Fasteners coated with the adhesive compound, taken from production batches, must be screwed into
a container capable of being pressurized to 4 bar minimum. The female thread in the container shall
be unplated, clean and dry steel and must have a 6H tolerance. When assembled in the container 3-4
adhesive coated threads shall be in contact with the female thread described above. No clamping
force shall be induced in the fastener and the maximum speed of assembly must not exceed 30
r.p.m. The assembly must then be left to cure for 24 hours at 20 °C. Test assemblies must be
subjected to the test conditions immediately after completion of the 24 hour curing time.

7.2 TEST METHODS

Using screws M10 x 55 with a surface finish in accordance with S437 (WX 100) that have adhesive
compound applied to the thread as specified in Section 4 prepare test assemblies as specified in
Section 7.1. Fill these test assemblies with fluid as specified in Clauses 7.2.1, 7.2.2, 7.2.3, and 7.2.4
respectively and add a fluorescent dyestuff. Subject test assemblies to test conditions specified in
Clauses 7.2.1 through 7.2.6. There must be no evidence of leakage under ultra-violet light. After
completion of each of these tests, the fastener must meet the requirements for adhesion break
resistance specified in Table 1 whilst the assembly is hot but with pressure released.

7.2.1 ENGINE COOLANT/ANTIFREEZE RESISTANCE

Use any Ford recommended service fluid diluted with water per package directions.. The test
period shall be 5 hours at 120 +/- 2 °C with the test assembly pressurized to 2 bar.

7.2.2 ENGINE OIL RESISTANCE

Any commercially available engine oil labeled SAE 10W30 or 5W20. The test period shall be
5 hours at 160 +/- 2 °C with the test assembly pressurized to 4 bar.

7.2.3 FUEL RESISTANCE

ASTM Fuel C + 15% methanol for 5 hours at 70 +/- 2 °C with the test assembly pressurized
to 4 bar.

7.2.4 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID RESISTANCE

Use any Ford recommended automatic transmission service fluid. Test for 5 hours at 150 +/-
5 °C with the test assembly pressurized to 4 bar.

7.2.5 HEAT RESISTANCE

Condition test assemblies for 5 hours at 120+/- 2 °C then subject them to Clauses 7.2.1,
7.2.2, 7.2.3, and 7.2.4 when the test assemblies have returned to 20 °C.

7.2.6 COLD RESISTANCE

Condition test assemblies for 5 hours at -30+/- 2 °C then subject them to Clauses 7.2.1,
7.2.2, 7.2.3, and 7.2.4 when the test assemblies have returned to 20 °C.

7.3 TEST EQUIPMENT

Test Equipment must be capable of maintaining the test pressures to +/- 3% for the duration of testing
specified.

8. STORAGE LIFE
Parts supplied shall still meet the requirements of this specification 6 months after receipt by Ford when
stored at 5 to 28 °C with no direct heat or sunlight.
