CHAPTER THREE
3.0 MATERIALS AND METHODS
  3.1 Experimental site
The experiment was conducted on the poultry unit of the Teaching and
Research Farm, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH),
Ogbomoso, Oyo State Nigeria. It is located in the South-western part of
Nigeria. The city lies between latitude 8°8°N and longitude 4°'16°'
3.2 Preparation and collection of Test ingredient
Cinnamon powder was procured from GEL SPICE CO; INC, BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY USA.
3.3 EXPERIMENTAL DIET
The birds were fed ad-libitum on a commercial starter mash diet containing minimum of 22%
Crude Protein and 3000kcal/kg Metabolizable Energy from day to 3 week of the experiment
followed by finisher mash diet containing minimum 18% Crude Protein and 3150kcal/kg
Metabolizable Energy from 4 week to the 6t week.

3.4 FORMATION OF EXPERIMENTAL DIETS
Varying quantity of Cinnamon (Cinnanomum zeylanicum) powder (CP) was mixed with four liters of
commercial feed per treatment and replicates respectively. The layout goes thus;
EXPERIMENTAL LAYOUT
 T1: 0g CP + 4lit of water
 T2: 0.1g CP + 4lit of water
 T3: 0.2g CP + 4lit of water
 T4: 0.3g CP + 4lit of water
 T5: 0.4g CP + 4lit of water
3.5 EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALS AND MANAGEMENT
One hundred and fifty (150) day old Ross 300 broiler chicks will be used for the experiment. The
birds will be purchased from a reputable hatchery farm in llorin, Kwara State. The birds will be
weighed prior to commencement of the experiment and distributed randomly after weight
balancing into five dietary treatment of three replicates each, with each replicate having ten (10)
birds in a Completely Randomized Design Experiment. The birds will be managed intensively in a
deep litter system using wood shavings as litters. The birds will be offered quality water ad-
libitum on daily basis throughout the experiment. All necessary medications and vaccination will
be administer (to the control group) to maintain a healthy flock.
3.6 DATA COLLECTION
At the end of the three (3) weeks and six (6) two birds per replica will be randomly selected and
starved for 12 hours and slaughtered. They will be properly bled by hanging their legs and turning
down their necks and then scald using water at a temperature of 60 degrees centigrade.
After de-feathering the weight of the cut-up parts (head, shank, thigh, breast, neck, wings, and
drumstick) will be taken. Visceral organs include (heart, kidney, lungs, liver, spleen, gizzard, and
proventriculus) and the abdominal fats will be weighed by using electronic sensitive scale.
3.8 STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
All the data generated will be subjected to one-way Analysis of Variance
(ANOVA) using (SAS, 2009). The variations in means will be separated using
Duncan's Multiple Range Test of the same statistical package.
