Introduction

Since the appearance of the first version Monah5 in 2005 there have been many
changes in the Unicode registration of Old Church Slavonic (OCS), comprising more
than 50 units. This font MonahOCS is made according to version 9 of Unicode. Font
covers standard Cyrillic and custom OCS code page. In order to have contemporary
and old Cyrillic in one font we have put some OCS letters in PUA (Private Use Area).
Djerv2 (Ꙉ) E6DB, djerv2 (ꙉ) E6EE
Cherv () ECBA, cherv (ч) ECD2
ShtaSt (Щ) ED6F, shtaSt (щ) ED83
ides () E64D

Also, all superscript letters, titlos, diacritical marks, signs and numbers are in PUA.

The font comprises a full set of superscript letters for lower and upper case charac-
ters, to be written between the characters or above, with or without titlo; further-
more, diacritical marks and titlos, punctuation marks and symbols, numbers for lower
and upper case characters. Unlike Monah 5 it does not have composite characters and
ligatures.
MonahOCS provides a convenient means for the transcription of texts (without abbre-
viations).

Keyboard layout
A problem with OCS is its large number of characters: While English has 26, in OCS
they range from 50 to 100. This font manages 50 standard lower case and 50 upper
case characters directly from the keyboard, while the rest comes from OpenType fea-
tures in programs supporting OT fonts such as InDesign. See the keyboard layout for
MonahOCS.

• Install font MonahOCS.otf (for older PC systems i.e. XP install MonahOCS.ttf)

• Install keyboard layout
(for MAC: put MonahOCS.keylayout and MonahOCS.icns in /Library/Keyboard Layouts,
open International than in Input Menu check MonahOCS. For PC: read "read me" file)
• Print: Keyboard-MonahOCS.pdf

You are ready to use MonahOCS.

For contemporary cyrillic, use any cyrillic system keyboard
For OCS cyrillic, use MonahOCS Unicode keyboard

If you use InDesign (highly recommended)

Open the Glyphs panel
1. Choose Type > Glyphs or Window > Type & Tables > Glyphs.
2. Choose Entire Font to display all glyphs available in the font. Sort glyphs in the
Glyphs panel
3. Choose By CID / GID or By Unicode to determine how glyphs are sorted in the
Glyphs panel.
In glyphs window you will see all characters in font. Special characters are those with
small triangle in lower right angle. When you press this key it will open a new window
with alternative characters. You may choose any of them; just depress a wanted
character and you will get it in text. For example, type number 1 and you get ().
Select  and on glyph window  will be selected. Press  and in new window you will
see               etc. Depress a desired number and you will have that
in text. Numbers are arranged by ascending value (1, 10, 100, 1000, 10000 ...), (2,
20, 200, 2000, 20000...) etc. All numbers are for lower case and upper case letters
plus some of them have glyph variants.
Superscript letters and titlos written on the left over the character are adjusted for
the width of letter "и" or "И" as letters of average width. It means that over narrow
or broad letters will not fit exactly (  , ш ). By kerning (InDesign) you can adjust their
position (  , ш ).
Special characters

Shift 1 Shift 2 Shift 3 Shift 4 Shift 5 Shift 6 Shift 7 Shift 8 = Shift = - Shift - period

Each character represents a set of corresponding characters. When you type and
you need some lower case superscript letter to be placed between two letters, you
always have to type Shift1 and you will get (). Select  and on glyphs window  will be
automatically selected. Press that field and a new window with all superscript letters will
open. Depress on a desired letter. In that way every character can be accessed directly
or in two easy steps mentioned.

MS Windows users may use Insert Symbol.
