Assignment

The assignment for the Foundation Engineering course at Wolaita Sodo University involves designing a spread footing and estimating load capacities for various pile scenarios using specified methods and factors of safety. It includes calculations for a cylindrical concrete pile, a group of piles in soft clay, and a twelve pile group in clay, along with questions on pile classification and properties of expansive soils. Students are required to apply engineering principles and methods to solve these practical problems.

WOLAITA SODO UNIVERSITY

COLLAGE OF ENGINEERING
Department of Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering
Course: - Foundation Engineering Year: - Ⅳ semester: - Ⅰ
Assignment total mark: - 25%
1. Design a spread or isolated square footing placed at a depth of 1 m below ground surface

level in a soil c’=10kPa,  ' =280,  =19 kN/m3 using ULSD design method. The footing
carries unfactored superstructure loads of DL=500KN and LL=400KN. Use C-30 concrete
and S-300 steel reinforcement bars and class I work. The dimension of the column is
0.25mx0.25m.
2. A cylindrical concrete pile of diameter 0.4m is driven to a depth of 10 m into a clay with su =
40 kPa, ∅,CS= 30°, OCR=3,and 𝛾sat= . Groundwater level is at the surface. By
using ESA and TSA method Estimate the allowable load capacity for a factor of safety of 3.
Is the pile a friction pile?
3. A group of 9 piles with 3 piles in a row was driven in to a soft clay extending
from ground level to a great depth. The diameter and the length of the piles
were 0.35m and 10 m respectively. The unconfined compressive strength of the
clay is 80kPa. If the piles were placed 0.8 m center to center, compute the
allowable load on the pile group on the basis of a shear failure criterion for a
factor of safety of 3. α = 1.0 and Nc=9
4. Twelve pile group consists 0.4m diameter friction concret piles 14m long.the
piles are driven in to clay having an uncofined compressive strengh of 180 kPa
and unit weight of clay is 20 KN/m3. The spacing of the pile is 0.8m ceter to
ceneter.Assume any missed data.
1. Find allowable group pile capacity based on individual pile failure using factor
of safety of 3
2. Find block capacity of the pile group using factor of safety of 3
3. Find minimum piles spacing in order to achieve a 100% efficiency
Part two
5. Berifly explain pile classification
6. What are the Physical Properties of Expansive Soils?
7. What is plasitic limit, PL, Plasticity index, PI, and liquid limit, LL?
