Students are required to maintain a Field Log during their field placement to integrate theory and practice while tracking personal and professional growth. Each of the five log entries must include a description of activities, identification of social work knowledge and skills used, reflections on learning, and any questions or concerns. The logs will be reviewed by the Field Seminar Professor, focusing on generalized themes discussed by students.

Field Log Guidelines

Students will maintain a Field Log throughout their field placement. Field Logs serve to assist
students in the integration of theory and practice and to chart both personal and professional
growth. Students must complete (5) field logs. Each log entry should include:
1. A brief description of the student’s activity.
2. Identification or summary of the social work knowledge, values and skills utilized and/or
practice behaviors demonstrated
3. The student’s reflections and analysis of his/her learning; for example, how daily
activities in the field are connected to concepts that they’ve learned in the classroom.
4. Any questions or concerns raised by the student’s experiences.

Field Logs will be reviewed by the Field Seminar Professor and integrate themes (not specific
student/field instructor or field placement topics, but generalized themes) students discuss on a
regular basis.
