3.0 SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENT 1

The assignment is due at the end of week 7, at 11.59 pm.

. 4.0 QUESTIONS/DESCRIPTIONS

QUESTION 1 (PO1, CO1, C2)

a. Mass transfer occurs by molecular diffusion, eddy diffusion, and bulk flow. Molecular
diffusion occurs by a number of different driving forces. Define 4 type of driving forces that
cause Molecular Diffusion.
(4 marks)

b. Diffusivities are varying in order of magnitude for different phases. Describe two majors’
factors that influence the diffusivity of substance in a particular medium.
(4 marks)

c. Mass transfer is of crucial significance in the food sector, as it is closely involved in a

multitude of processes pertaining to food industry, preservation, and packing. Provide four
(4) examples of mass transfer processes in the food sector and elaborate on each of them.
(8 marks)

d. The greater interest in separation processes is mass transfer across an interface between
fluid and solid phase. One of theoretical model has been developed to describe mass
transfer between a fluid and such solid surfaces is Boundary layers theory. Describe the
concept of concentration boundary layer in mass transfer and how does it relate to the mass
transfer coefficient.
(9 marks)

QUESTION 2 (PO2, CO2, C4)

a. A patient needs a fast-acting pain reliever in the form of a liquid medication. A liquid
acetaminophen (paracetamol) solution is injected directly to a patient with temperature of 40°C
and diffuse through his blood. The viscosity of blood plasma at 40o C is reported as 1.2 Cp.
The molecular weight of Acetaminophen (C8H9NO2) is 151.163 g/mol and plasma blood is
65,000 g/mol. The association parameter of plasma blood is assumed similar to water. The
viscosity of the solution mixture of acetaminophen in blood plasma is about 0.019 cp.

i. Predict the diffusivity of this solution when using C. Wilke-Chang correlation and Stoke
Einstein
(6 marks)

ii. When the solute acetaminophen (A) is flowing through a thin film of plasma blood (B),
with 0.4 cm of thick at 293 K, at one point 1 to the boundary film, the concentration of
Acetaminophen is 25 wt% and 5 wt% at point 2. Total volume of solution is 1 L. Assuming
the eddy motion is zero, Estimate the mass transfer coefficient, kc and rate of mass
transfer NA, using calculated diffusivities of Both Wilke Chang and Stoke Einstein.
(7 marks)

b. The need for portable energy has experienced a significant surge with the rapid advancement
of mobile technology. The zinc-air battery is widely regarded as a highly promising option for
future energy applications due to its various advantageous characteristics. In this
electrochemical system, the oxygen present in the air serves as the cathode, while zinc
functions as the anode. The rate of mass transfer of zinc into the flowing air is investigated in
the laboratory. The air is flowing into the battery, with velocity of 15 x 10-4 m/s and contact
with the Zinc anode at atmospheric total pressure and 273 K. The diffusion coefficient of
Zinc Air battery is measured as 1.3 x 10-5 m2/s. The density of zinc is 7.14 g/cm3 and viscosity
of zinc in Air 73.737 mPa.s.
.

i. Predict the mass transfer coefficient of Air flowing parallel to flat plate of Zinc-Air
Battery with length of 0.2 m. Given that Air and Zinc are not diluted.
(5 marks)

ii. Predict the mass transfer coefficient of Air flowing past to a sphere of Zinc-Air Battery
with diameter of 0.1 m. Given that Air and Zinc are not diluted.

(5 marks)

iii. Determine the battery that has a higher rate when the pressure at the surface of zinc
is 2 kPa and the diffusion is from zinc to the air.
