Case Study: Sustainability Practices at Nile Resort Hotel, Jinja
i. Case Study Location: Nile Resort Hotel, Jinja
The Nile Resort Hotel, located along the banks of the River Nile in Jinja, Uganda, is a popular
destination for both local and international tourists. The hotel has implemented various
sustainability initiatives such as solar energy usage, water conservation practices, local sourcing
of food, and waste reduction programs.
This makes it an ideal candidate to investigate how sustainability efforts influence both guest
satisfaction and business performance.
ii. Research Design: Mixed-Methods Case Study
● A mixed-methods approach will be used, combining both quantitative and qualitative
research designs. This allows for a holistic understanding of the hotel’s sustainability
impact by using statistical data (e.g., guest satisfaction scores, financial performance)
and in-depth insights from stakeholders (e.g., guests, staff, management).
iii. Sampling Strategies
● Guests: A random sampling technique will be used to select hotel guests based on
categories such as domestic vs international, short stay vs long stay.
● Staff and Management: A purposive sampling method will be used to select key
informants like hotel managers, chefs, and housekeeping supervisors who are directly
involved in implementing sustainability practices.
● Local Suppliers: Snowball sampling will be used to reach suppliers of locally sourced
goods who are impacted by the hotel’s ethical sourcing policies.
iv. Data Collection Tools
● Questionnaires: Distributed to guests to assess satisfaction with aspects related to
sustainability (e.g., comfort, cleanliness, eco-friendliness).
● Semi-Structured Interviews: Conducted with hotel staff, management, and suppliers to
gain insights into sustainability practices and business outcomes.
● Observation Checklists: Used by the researcher to observe visible sustainability efforts
(e.g., presence of recycling bins, energy-efficient lighting).
● Document Review: Business reports, guest feedback forms, energy and water
consumption records will be analyzed.
v. Data Analysis
● Quantitative Data (from surveys): Will be analyzed using statistical software like Excel.
Techniques such as descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analysis will help
identify relationships between sustainability practices and guest satisfaction/business
performance.
● Qualitative Data (from interviews and observations): Will be analyzed using thematic
analysis to identify common themes and patterns related to perceptions, challenges, and
benefits of sustainable practices.
● Triangulation will be used to cross-validate data from different sources for greater
reliability and validity.
