HIV/AIDS FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS IN LINDI MUNICIPAL
COUNCIL

Certainly, it is not easy to mention every individual who in one way or another
participated to eventually make the activity a success, to them all mentors would also
like to convey their appreciations.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Paediatric HIV/AIDS Mentorship was conducted to 6 Health facilities in Lindi


Municipal Council from 26th November 2022 to 8th December 2022.

This activity was funded by USAID - AFYA YANGU and organized by Paediatrics
HIV/AIDs Mentors from Lindi Municipal Council

The main goal of this activity was to equip health care providers with knowledge and
skills on.

 Identification of paediatric child with HIGH VIRAL LOAD and Provision of


Enhanced Adherence and Counselling

 Proper dispensing and administration of paediatric anti-retrovirus (ART) and


update of paediatric dolutegravir 10mg (pDTG)

 Proper filling of CTC 1&2 cards, screening tools and appointments tools.

At the end of Mentorship, we were able to attend all paediatric child with HIV/AIDS,
parents and guardian in all visited Facilities, and Heath Care workers were able to
manage and provision of paediatric ART dosage correctly.

INTRODUCTION
To ensure that Tanzania reaches the Global target of reducing burden of disease in
paediatric population living with HIV/AIDS, multiple strategies have been developed
including strengthening Saturday/ Paediatric HIV/AIDS Care and treatment clinics.

Saturday/ Paediatric HIV/AIDS Care and treatment clinic are services that provides
comprehensive care and support for HIV infected children and their families. Also
provision basic knowledge of HIV/AIDS Services including HIV/AIDS Education,
Disclosure, Counselling and testing, ART to children and their families, Group support
entertainment activities and safer paediatric nutrition counselling.

Health Care Workers should ensure that parents and caregivers understand the
paediatric Population living with HIV/AIDS investigations and testing process, the
meaning of test results and the benefits of follow-up Paediatric HIV/AIDS Care and
treatment clinics.

Health Care Workers should know how to screen children for opportunist infections,
collect and transport samples for investigations (CD4, Viral Load, CrAg, Sputum, RFT,
LFT) following the National testing algorithm as well as how to interpret results and
provision of paediatric ART according to National paediatric ART guideline.

A total of 12 Health Care Workers were mentored on Saturday/ Paediatric HIV/AIDS


Care and treatment clinic. This activity should be conducted for two weeks in each
quarter with the support of USAID - AFYA YANGU.

OBJECTIVE
1. Identification of children with HIGH VIRAL LOAD
2. Mentorship on how to provide Enhanced Adherence and Counselling

3. Mentorship on how to dispense and administer of paediatric anti-retrovirus (ART)


and update of paediatric dolutegravir 10mg (pDTG)

4. Outcome of children and Adolescents whom completed EAC and follow-up 2 nd


viral copies results

5. To identify Gaps on documentation in CTC 1& 2 cards, screening tools,


appointment tools and participating in filling the Gaps.

METHODOLOGY

 Saturday/ Paediatric HIV/AIDS Care and treatment clinic Mentorship was


Participatory kind of activity where by Mentors and Mentees were participating
in the activity.

 The selection of participants based on Health Care providers who are working on
HIV/AIDS Care and treatment clinics

 Mentors visited facility to facility to conduct Mentorship to each respective


Facility.

 The activity was conducted using the already filled CTC 1&2 cards, Viral load,
EAC registers and CTC Database.

FINDINGS
We observed the following from the mentored HCWs:
Strengths

 Availability of HIV Positive Children at Care and treatment

 All children are registered in a CTC Data Base and have CTC 1&2 Cards in a

proper file.

 All children are provided with ART

 Investigations especially viral load are taken and result returned in all facilities

 Initiation of EAC in children with high viral load

 Availability of HIV test kit, screening and appointment tools, Registers,

HIV/AIDS Treatment guideline and Paediatric Job Aids at all facilities

Weakness

 Missed appointments children at some facilities

 Viral load copies results are not recorded/updated in CTC 2 Card at Mipingo

Dispensary

 In some facilities EAC sessions are not well documented/updated.

 Improper documentation and update to CTC 2 card and data base.

 Absent of ABC 120mg /3TC60mg & ABC 600mg /3TC 300mg to some facilities

(Kilangala, Mvuleni, Mipingo, Kitomanga).

RECOMMENDATIONS
 Communications and attach Missed appointments children to specific
community-based Health care provider at Mchinga, Ng’apa and Mipingo
dispensaries

 HVL and other investigation Should be taken in time and HVL results should be
recorded /updated in CTC1&2

 CTC cards, Screen tools and all registers should be filled correctly

 Mentorship, coaching and on job training needed in facilities especially in


paediatric anti-retrovirus (ART).

 USAID - AFYA YANGU facilitate availabilities of CTC cards, and Registers.

 MPHARM make availabilities of ABC 120mg /3TC 60mg & ABC 600mg /3TC
300mg at facilities.
