Scatter Plot
OBJECTIVE:
At the end of the lesson the student shall be
- able to understand what scatter plot is.
Scatter plot uses dots to represent values for two
different numeric variables. The position of each
dot on the horizontal and vertical axis indicates
of an individual data point.
- it is used to observe relationship between variables.
Uses:
It instantly report a large volume of data and
beneficial in the ff. situations
a. large set of data wherein each set comprises
a pair of values
b. given data is numeric form
The line drawn in a scatter plot which is near to almost
all the points in the plot Is known as “line of best fit” or
trend line
Example
Draw a scatter plot for the given data that shows the
number of games played and scores obtained in
each instance.
No. 3 5 2 6 7 1 2 7 1
games
Scores 80 90 75 80 90 50 65 85 40
Solution:
X axis or horizontal axis-no. of games
Y axis or vertical axis -scores
The Graph
Note: You can combine scatter plots in multiple plots per
sheet; using multivariable for more than two variables
Scatter plot correlation
We know that the correlation is a statistical measure
of the relationship between the two variables relative
movement if the variables are correlated the points will fall
along the line the closer the points will touch the line.
Types of Correlation
1. Positive correlation
-points are moving from left to right, means values of
the variable are increasing with respect to another.
Types of positive correlation
a. perfect positive almost straight line moving
right
b. high positive
c. low positive still point to the right
2. Negative correlation
-points are moving from right to left, means
values of one variable are decreasing
with respect to another
Types of negative correlation
a. perfect negative
b. high negative
c. low negative
3. No correlation
Activity:
1. Given the data of the visitors and rain in mm/hr,
Is there a correlation of the variables?
Visitor 70 60 65 60 50 55 50 30 20
s
Rain 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
mm/hr
2. Given the data of the height and age of children,
Is there a correlation of the variables?
Height 70 50 45 52 48 55 52 60 63
Age 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13
