Executive Summary

This Internship Project has been undertaken for the partial fulfilment in the sixth semester of
the Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (BBA) from Chitkara University, Punjab.
This internship has been undertaken by Navroop Singh, student of Chitkara University,
pursuing bachelors of business administration in a plywood enterprise named RAM
TRADERS. This enterprise is located in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. The internship
in this enterprise was offered and selected considering my interest in the company and
plywood sector.

The plywood market in India is expected to witness significant growth in 2024. This growth
can be attributed to various factors such as the increasing demand for plywood in the
construction industry, the rising popularity of plywood furniture, and the overall growth of
the real estate sector.

One of the driving forces behind the growth of the plywood market is the construction sector.
As urbanization continues to rise, there is an increased demand for housing and infrastructure
development. Plywood is widely used in construction for applications such as flooring,
roofing, walls, and partitions. Its durability, strength, and versatility make it a preferred
choice for builders and contractors.

Additionally, the demand for plywood furniture is on the rise. With changing lifestyles and
preferences, consumers are opting for stylish and durable furniture options. Plywood offers a
wide range of design possibilities and is known for its strength and stability. As a result, it is
increasingly being used in the manufacturing of furniture items such as beds, cabinets, tables,
and chairs.

In terms of the real estate sector, the growth of affordable housing projects and the
development of commercial spaces contribute to the demand for plywood. As more
residential and commercial buildings are constructed, there is a need for high-quality
plywood for interior and exterior applications.

Innovation and technological advancements are also shaping the plywood market in India.
Manufacturers are investing in research and development to introduce new and improved
plywood products. These innovations include fire-resistant plywood, moisture-resistant
plywood, and eco-friendly plywood options. Such advancements cater to the evolving needs
of consumers and provide them with more choices in the market.

Sustainability is another important aspect of the plywood market. With increasing

environmental concerns, there is a growing demand for plywood made from sustainable
sources. Forest certification programs and responsible sourcing practices are gaining
importance in the industry. Consumers are becoming more conscious of the environmental
impact of their choices and are opting for plywood products that are eco-friendly.

Government regulations and policies also play a role in shaping the plywood market. The
Indian government has implemented regulations to ensure the quality and safety of plywood
products. Compliance with these regulations is essential for manufacturers to operate in the
market.

My main role in this internship was recording the sales of the company and attending the
customers at front desk and providing them the desired product according to their needs.

The role of front desk executive was the primary role in the company including major
responsibilities like answering the calls and redirecting them to the managers and their
assistants.

INTRODUCTION

Process of choosing a company:

I was able to find an offline internship at Ram Traders, Mandi. This business enterprise deals
in plywood and hardware items. One of the main reason of applying here was my personal
interest in the field of plywood and I believe that this organisation could definitely help me
and improve my knowledge and skills. Working here, turned out really favourable for me as
they helped me to gain more knowledge on plywood and other materials they were dealing
with, the managers here were professional regarding their work and this really helped me a
lot in adapting good changes.

AREA:

I was already interested in the area of front desk executive and cashier and thankfully was
offered the same role in the organisation. The role of front desk executive at the firm was
quite extensive, but I adapted the change due to my interest in the same. It provided me a
great insight of customer wants, how to initiate conversations with customers, how to deal
with different clients which will be helpful for my improvement in future job place.

COMPANY PROFILE

ORIGIN:

Ram Traders, one of the leading and biggest plywood store in district Mandi of Himachal
Pradesh. This company is a private limited and was started at a small scale. The idea of
running this business came with the view of shortage of plywood stores in the market. The
marketing skills and customer relationship lead to the development of the company under the
guidance of Mr. Avtar Singh.

BACKGROUND AND INCEPTION:

Ram Traders is a business organisation which deals in plywood, mica, sun mica, doors, pvc
panels, wooden flooring, HDHMR board, moulding, hardware and aluminium. This
organisation has been started by Mr. Avtar Singh in the year 1998, who earlier just ran a
small shop of medicines owned by his father. He did not had enough money to study after the
10th class so he began to help his father in medicine shop, which was not making enough
money for him and his family but after many years of struggle and savings from his father’s
medicine shop, he discovered a need and potential of running a plywood and hardware store
in Mandi (H.P) because people were not having much access to these products in this district
of Himachal Pradesh and even the competition was not much higher during that time so he
decided to open this firm. He started the business with only two small shops in the beginning
and employing two workers in the shop but after 2 years of opening this organisation, he
earned a great amount of profit and nowadays his business is working very well. In recent
days, his business is handled by his son Mr. Harinder Singh, who is having a great knowledge
about the functioning of business and has completed his senior secondary education in
commerce background. He is the new owner of this firm and has extended this business to
about 10 shops and 2 basements in today’s date. The firm has a good reputation and goodwill
in the market because it deals in all the original and genuine products. People who have used
their products show their response through online reviews.

GROWTH:

Ram Traders has over 25 years of existence in the market. It has played an important role in
providing the plywood and other home materials for the people residing in Mandi and also
contributed in the growth of Indian Plywood market. In the early years of the company, it
deals only within two main products: plywood and mica. The company has made huge
progress dealing within more than 15 products in today’s date including- doors, plastic matt,
hardware, aluminium, mica, plywood, heavy density boards, laminated sheets, plastic panels,
wooden flooring and many more.

This firm was earlier started on a rented place making it difficult to sustain profits and
manage expenses and salaries. Now, this firm has self-owned shops with triple the amount of
land as compared to the time when it was started.

EXPANSION AND DEMAND:

Ram Traders became a quick success in the market and the demand of its products increased
readily since its introduction. There was a huge demand for the hardboard and it even rose
higher than the supply of hardboard. So, in order to meet the increasing demand, the company
decided to increase the budget which led to a huge supply and inventory. The company was
extended to about 30% in the year 2012 and in today’s date, the company analysis only 60%
growth and expects to increase the growth percentage by 2030. The company also
experienced a huge demand in plastic products like pvc doors and panels, which also
contributes a portion of profit in the company.

VISION, MISSION AND QUALITY POLICY:

VISION:

The main vision of Ram Traders is to remain the best plywood and hardware store in Mandi
(H.P)

MISSION:

The main mission of Ram Traders is to provide the best customer satisfaction through quality
and customer care, to protect, promote as well as safeguard the interest of customers. Also to
improve the products sold through finding the best manufacturer in the segment. Moreover,
to provide a boost in the plywood and hardware market and contribute to economy growth of
the nation.

INDUSTRY PROFILE

INDUSTRY PROFILE:

Trees are one of the greatest gifts given to the man by the nature. Nature raises trees just like
a mother who brings up her children, making each tree as a separate individual, just like
humans. It is amazing to see the natural abstract of time, colour and texture of wood. Trees
are natures one of the most prized treasures given to man. They provide man with shelter,
fuel, medicines. Trees can be cut and made into sticks, war tools, and build vehicles of
transportation like ship. The trees have significantly played a large role in man’s journey of
conquering the seas and to fly in the air. According to archaeologist, man’s cultural and
economic progress can be traced in the art of wood veneering. Relics found in ancient Egypt
and Chinese tombs dating from 2000BC indicate that veneering combines a new figure and
beauty. Veneer was used in Greek to beautify the furniture. Today veneers produced from
mass production technique build over 80% of furniture.

HISTORY OF PLYWOOD INDUSTRY:

India is rich in its forest wealth. It has a huge land area under forests. All varieties of forest
growth are found in India. They range from tropical hardwood to high altitude coniferous
forests. However present India is facing increasing threat of the depletion of forest resources
due to increase of population, greater demand for furniture, more land used for construction
of buildings and other causes. So due to this various steps are taken by the Government of
India, NGO’s to increase tree plantation, conserving the natural forest and meet the demand
for wood and wood products of India’s domestic as well as international markets. It was
more than 75 years since plywood industry was started in India. It was started on a modest
scale. In the year 1906-07 plywood was imported in India and it was valued over Rs 30 lakhs.
The imports of plywood rose after this in a steady manner and in the years1924-25 it was
worth Rs 90 lakhs. Tea industry in West Bengal, Assam and Kerala was steadily developing
in that period of time and it was thought that plywood industry of India should be developed
as it can play a major role in production of tea chests mainly for the exports of the tea. In the
period from 1923-25 the growth of the plywood industry in India was steady but slow. It did
not dramatic increase for the next few years.

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PLYWOOD INDUSTRY IN INDIA:

In India the plywood Industry consists of small, medium and large scale manufactures. They
have also played a crucial role in the overall development of India in terms of social and
economic development. Forests are one of the main natural resources of India. In India
plywood was initially used to make tea boxes for exporting tea to Europe and it helped in
overcoming the complaints of tanning of tea, change in colour, lack of proper packing for
transportation. Second World War was an important event in the growth of plywood industry
in India. With the outbreak of Second World War there was increased demand for
manufacturing of tea chests. So it increased the demand for suitable timber and this intern
lead to the increase in the growth of plywood industry in India in a significant rate. Various
experiments were made in forest research institute and it was found out that plywood made
from Indian timbers were as good as imported products and thus various modern factories
were set up in places like Bangalore, Baliapattanam, Dandeli and Bihar.

PLYWOOD INDUSTRY IN POST INDEPENDENCE PERIOD:

In years 1948-50 India was the net importer of plywood mainly plywood used for making tea
chest was mainly imported to India. In these years plywood industry in India witnessed
diversification of plywood products like commercial plywood, decorative plywood, marine
and air craft plywood etc. during the 90’s India was manufacturing more than 140 million
square meters of plywood types and earning approximately over Rs 900crore. Plywood
industry has mainly grown in large and medium scale sectors. The growth in small scale
industries is not as high as the large or medium scale. This industry provides employment to
over 1 lakh people and has total investment over 700 to 900crores.

TRENDS IN PLYWOOD INDUSTRY:

Plywood industry also has severe competition from inside. Many companies suffer due to this
and are implementing reduction in costs and increasing the efficiency simultaneously. There
is foreign competition as well looking to increase their strength of their domestic production
through specialization of product. Many of the manufactures have obtained or are applying
for ISO 9000/90002 certification.

FUTURE OUTLOOK FOR PLYWOOD INDUSTRY:

Indian plywood industry has a bright and shining future. In the past 15-25 years the increase
in plywood products has been on the increase not only in India but all over the world. So it
opens a whole new market of opportunities and growth for plywood industries. They should
also focus on improving the products they make simultaneously not compromising their
quality. New plywood products are well accepted by the market in both India and abroad. At
present time the industry is producing more wood than they have in the last 20 years.
Plywood gives a more natural look and finish and it is the only non- cement wood composite
that can be fully utilized in external and marine conditions. So overall the Indian plywood
industry has come a long way since its inception, and it can be said that it has a very bright
future in the coming years.

PLYWOOD INDUSTRY:

The necessity of making plywood arises out of the inherent defect in the wood. Unlike
normal wood that is available purely in nature that is used, plywood is more like an
engineered wood panel made from a thin layers of wood veneers assembled with grain
direction of adjacent veneer as right angled to each other with layer of synthetic resins,
adhesive and pressured under high heat pressure, thus imparting a great degree of strength.
The plywood is dimensionally stable and has strongest sheet material weight ratio. It is
designed especially for sturdiness and strength. Plywood is three times stronger than normal
timber for the same use. However plywood industry also faces certain problems and
challenges. This industry has become victim of a misconception. It is assumed that plywood
industry is excessively using our natural resources. This is a false misconception as plywood
industry as it plays an excellent role as economic substitute of solid wood thus prevention of
natural forest and ecology.

USES OF PLYWOOD:

1. Sheds and cladding are made from plywood

2. It may be used for wall panelling, flooring and furniture
3. Shuttering boxes used in construction industry are made from shuttering plywood
4. Marine plywood can be used underwater as it has waterproof adhesive.

PRODUCT PROFILE

1. MARINE PLYWOOD:

Marine plywood is manufactured from durable face and core veneers, with few
defects so it performs longer in both humid and wet conditions and resists
delaminating and fungal attack. Its construction is such that it can be used in
environments where it is exposed to moisture for long periods. Each wood veneer will
be from tropical hardwoods and have negligible core gap, limiting the chance of
trapping water in the plywood and hence providing a solid and stable glue bond. It
uses an exterior Weather and Boil Proof (WBP) glue similar to most exterior
plywoods.

‘Kitply’ is the most selling and popular brand sold at Ram Traders.

2. AIRCRAFT PLYWOOD:

Aircraft plywood, also called airplane plywood, is the top grade durable
plywood. Aircraft plywood can be very thin birch plywood or hardwood plywood .
The thinnest general plywood may be as thin as 1.8mm . But aircraft plywood can be
1mm thin .
The face veneers and inner plies for aircraft plywood are free of open defects.
However, tiny sound tight knots are allowed in the face plies. Gaps and voids are not
allowed in core layers . Usually the back veneers are a little worse than the face
veneers because a few tiny defects are allowed in the back veneers . But the back
veneers can be the same good grade as face veneers .

The adhesives used in the manufacture of aircraft plywood shall be WBP phenol
formaldehyde, WBP melamine formaldehyde, which are thermosetting glues . The
species for producing aircraft plywood are birch, mahogany, hard maple, beech,
walnut, and many more.

Aircraft plywood are durable, strong and lightweight . Aircraft plywood can be used
in the manufacturing of aircraft, boats, furniture, model airplanes, model boats,
musical instruments, toys and wooden crafts.

The specifications of aircraft plywood:

Thicknesses : 1.0mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 1.8mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm,
5mm .

‘Century plywood’ was the best selling plywood at Ram Traders under this segment.

3. HARDBOARD:

Hardboard is a thin sheet product, as low as around 3mm and up to 8mm, often used
as a backboard for furniture, it is sometimes used as underlay for floor fit-outs but not
for laminates (which require denser HDF products). It is a rigid and relatively
cheap product but prone to damage by moisture and damp. As with
any composite fibre product care should be taken when cutting and
appropriate equipment used.

Hardboards are formed with wood fibre and made by high pressure compression and
temperature during a pressing process.

These are made by reducing steamed wood into fibres and by using the natural lignins
as a binder during the pressing process. Depending on the degree of pressing
involved, and hence the final density of the panel, the product is termed soft board or
hardboard.

The production of composite board products generally uses one of two processes; a
dry process and a wet/dry process. The former uses synthetic binders, often
formaldehyde-based agents or glues, to bind the wood fibres under pressure. The
latter might use steam and pressure along with increased levels of natural binders
to glue or cement the wood fibres together to form a board. There are also a number
of variations in between the two processes and the environmental impacts of the two
types of process can be significant, so it is worthwhile asking about manufacturing
details.

Raw and lacquered hardboard panels are used in many applications including
construction, packaging, furniture, upholstery, toys, and automobile and caravan
interiors.

Hardboard is often required for packaging of fruits, vegetables and mineral water
bottles because it is a natural product.

Hardboard brands available at Ram Traders:

 Western India Plywoods

 Vision Media
 Greenply
 Centuryply.

‘Action Tesa’ is the best selling hardboard brand at Ram Traders.

4. SHUTTERING PLYWOOD:

Shuttering plywood is a term quite commonly used in the construction industry. The
shuttering process – pouring the concrete into moulds – cannot happen without using
shuttering plywood. This is a kind of plywood which is designed in a way to prevent
concrete from coming out of the mould. This material is not used for aesthetic purposes,
but to hold concrete till it densifies to form a solid structure. It is weather resistant and
doesn’t stick to the concrete itself.
It is like any other plywood or wooden panel, created using thin veneers layered on top of
each other and glued together. Veneers are laid in such a way that their grains run
perpendicular to each other. If constructed properly, they have high strength. This kind of
construction ensures that they are high in strength and would not split when used for
construction. Shuttering plywood manufacturers provide these materials in different
thickness and sizes to meet different construction demands.

Shuttering plywood is used for outdoor applications. So, they are naturally water
resistant, do not warp or rot. Also, the glue used to make the shuttering plywood is
resistant to water penetration to ensure strength and durability. This kind of plywood can
be reused, albeit with some precautions. They should be cleaned carefully and stored in a
cool, dry place.
Shuttering plywood can also have a smooth and attractive outer veneer of higher quality
than those used in the inside layers. This type of surface is usually needed for clean and
attractive construction where aesthetic matters the most. However, plywood requires
regular sanding and finishing after every use. Shuttering plywood which doesn’t feature a
clean surface is not meant for aesthetic purposes. It is less expensive than the polished
ones.
Construction professionals use temporary wood or metal supports to hold shuttering
plywood in place. Once the plywood is in place, concrete is poured into the mould to give
it the desired shape. 12mm Shuttering ply is quite popular in the construction industry for
moulding concrete.

Shuttering plywood available at Ram Traders:

 Eko wood
 Today
 Austin
 Green ply
Best selling shuttering plywood at Ram Traders is ‘Eko Wood’

Pinewood is useful in crafting furniture and other types of carpentry work. Among woodworkers, it’s a
budget-friendly material. Even then, it’s lightweight and has an attractive grain that makes it
appropriate for aesthetically pleasing woodwork.

Properties:

 The material features light colour, generally creamy white. While the shades differ from white
to yellowish, the grains with knots are darker.
 Pinewood isn’t entirely resistant to rotting. That’s why the Pine Wood Flush Door
Manufacture treats the material with chemicals before fabricating products.
 Pinewood isn’t resistant to termite attacks, either. Naturally, it requires treatment before using
for exterior purposes.
 Pinewood is easy to work with and finishes perfectly with machines and handheld tools. The
softness of the surface also makes it suitable for drilling screws or driving in nails.

PVC DOORS:

A PVC door is one made from polyvinyl chloride. Polyvinyl chloride comes in both
rigid and flexible forms. Today, rigid polyvinyl chloride is used to fabricate most
doors that are on the market, though some doors are also standard PVC.

PVC doors are popular throughout the world in residential homes and
commercial buildings. The specific qualities of PVC doors mean that they will
not work in every situation.

Pros:

10.LAMINATED SHEETS:

Laminated sheets are a type of material that consists of multiple layers bonded
together. They are commonly used in various applications such as furniture, flooring,
countertops, and cabinetry. Laminated sheets are available in a wide range of sizes,
colours, and patterns, allowing for customization and versatility in design. They are
often made by bonding a decorative layer (such as a printed paper or vinyl) to a
substrate material (such as plywood or particleboard) using adhesive or heat. The
laminated sheet offers durability, moisture resistance, and an attractive finish.

Laminated sheets are resistant to scratches, stains, wear and tear, making them ideal
for furniture that experiences regular use. These are designed to be moisture-resistant,
making them suitable for use in areas experiencing high humidity, such as kitchens
and bathrooms. They come in a wide range of colour and pattern allowing the
customer to select from diverse design option. They are the more affordable in
comparison to solid wood or other premium materials.

Different type of laminated sheets available at the enterprise:

1. High-Pressure Laminate (HPL): HPL laminates are made by applying high heat and
pressure to multiple layers of kraft paper impregnated with resin. They are known for
their durability, resistance to scratches and impact, and a wide range of design
options.
2. Low-Pressure Laminate (LPL): LPL laminates are created by applying heat and
pressure to a single layer of decorative paper impregnated with resin. They are
generally more affordable than HPL laminates but may be less resistant to wear and
tear.

3. Wood Veneer Laminates: These laminates consist of thin slices of real wood veneer
bonded to a substrate material. They provide the natural beauty and grain patterns of
wood while offering enhanced durability and stability.

4. Thermally Fused Laminate (TFL): TFL laminates are created by fusing a

decorative layer with a melamine-impregnated resin to a substrate material through
heat and pressure. They are known for their cost-effectiveness, durability, and ease of
maintenance.

Most demanding sheets were HPL sheets due to their long life and best quality.

11.MOULDING:

Moulding is a decorative trim that is used to enhance the appearance of walls,

ceilings, or furniture. It comes in various shapes and sizes, and it's often made from

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

SCOPE OF STUDY:

This project has been undertaken by me to gain an in depth knowledge on plywood industry.
This project also helped me to improve my professional skills and expertise. It helped to
boost my confidence on professional ground by dealing with a high profile corporate and
engaging with customers. As for the company’s benefit is concerned, this project helped the
company to know it’s market condition and level of competition.

Also it helps in creating awareness to consumers regarding plywood quality and in promotion
of their services. In order to accomplish the objectives of the project a survey has been
conducted amongst the purchasers of the plywood. The survey is based on
questionnaire filling method. The survey is restricted to the information of quality and
genuineness of products between sellers and buyers.

TYPE OF RESEARCH:

1. OBSERVATIONAL RESEARCH:
This method involves observing and documenting customer behavior, such as
how they interact with different plywood products, what features they
prioritize, and how they make purchasing decisions. By observing customers
in real-time, i gathered valuable insights that helped in store's merchandising
strategies and product offerings.

For example: observing the most preferred sizes of plywood by customers can
help to order that particular size of plywood in bulk compared to other sizes of
plywood.

2. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH:
This method involves conducting interviews or focus groups with customers,
suppliers, or industry experts to gather in-depth insights and opinions.
Through open-ended questions and discussions, I was able to uncover valuable
information about customer preferences, product satisfaction, market trends,
and potential areas for improvement.
Example: collecting the data by analysing sales records and tracking the
number of units sold for each brand over a certain period of time. After that,
calculating the market share of each brand by dividing the sales of each brand
by the total sales of all brands. This quantitative approach can help by
providing a clear understanding of which brand is the most preferred by
customers, helping the store make informed decisions about which brands to
stock and promote.
