2. DESIGN ANALYSIS METHOD

2.1 Design Criteria
1. Generally the calculation is carried on base on AASHTO and ACI-318.
2. The uplift soil pressure on the bottom slab may not be unitorm, however, for simplicity, it shall be
Assumed to be uniform.
3. The culvert span is less than min. axle distance of vehicle, so it has been assumed that only one axle
of the design truck comes on the culvert at a time.
4. All soil has been assumed to be saturated soil, 18kN/m3 is used generally due to have no data
specifically.
5. The structure is analyzed using the moment distribution method.
The fixed-end moment each joint is the superposision of the fiex-end moments due to dead, live and
earth pressure loads.
6. Clear distance between 2 layers of renforcement shall no be more than 150mm and less than 25mm
Unless otherwise noted..
7. Load Combination that used refer to AASHTO:2020 LRFD Bridge Design Specification 9th Edition
in this calculation, service I and Extreme Event I are used for analysis.

A.2 LOADING
Design purposes a one-meter length of the culvert is considered
Load and Live Load Distribution Ref. 6 Chap. 12.11.2.1
Loads and load combinations specified in Table 3.4.1-1 shall apply. Live load shall be considered as
specified in Article 3.6.1.3. Distribution of wheel loads and concentrated loads for culverts with less
than 600 mm of fill shall be taken as specified in Article 4.6.2.10. For traffic traveling parallel to the
span, box culverts shall be designed for a single loaded lane with the single lane multiple presence
factor applied to the load. Requirements for bottom distribution reinforcement in top slabs of such
culverts shall be as specified in Article 9.7.3.2 for mild steel reinforcement and Article 5.14.4.1 for
prestressed reinforcement.

Distribution of wheel loads to culverts with 600 mm or more of cover shall be as specified in Article
3.6.1.2.6. The dynamic load allowance for buried structures shall conform to Article 3.6.2.2.

The fixed-end moment each joint is the superposision of the fiex-end moments due to dead, live and
earth pressure loads.

A.3.2 Thickness Check

Shear strength provided by concrete
A.3.2.1 Top & Bottom Slab

Shear reinforcement is seldom used in strip and spread footings due to the difficulty in placing it and
the fact that it is usually cheaper and easier to deepen the footing than it is to provide shear
reinforcement. Thus, in almost all cases, Av is less than Avmin and Av is normally zero,
resulting in Vs = 0, for such members, ACI 318M:19 table 22.5.5.1 requires the use of Eq.
1 𝑁𝑢
𝑉𝑐 = 0.66𝜆𝑠 𝜆 𝜌𝑤 3 𝑓𝑐 ′ + 𝑏 𝑑 Eq. A.3.2.1 Ref. 1 Table 22.5.5.1
6𝐴𝑔 𝑓

For most footings, will assume there is no aprreciable axial load (Nu = 0) & ACI 318M:19 Sec. 13.2.6.2
permits designers to ignore the size-effect factor (set ls = 1) for one-way shallow foundations,
two-way isolated footings, two-way combined footings, So Eq. A.3.2.1 can be reduced to the
following expression to be used for one-way shallow foundations.
1
𝑉𝑐 = 0.66𝜆 𝜌𝑤 3 𝑓𝑐 ′ 𝑏𝑓 𝑑

Where l is taken at 1.0 for normal-weight concrete and defined in ACI 318M:19 Table 19.2.4.1 (a)

B.3 LOADING

B.4.2 Thickness Check

Shear strength provided by concrete
B.4.2.1 Top & Bottom Slab

Shear reinforcement is seldom used in strip and spread footings due to the difficulty in placing it and
the fact that it is usually cheaper and easier to deepen the footing than it is to provide shear
reinforcement. Thus, in almost all cases, Av is less than Avmin and Av is normally zero,
resulting in Vs = 0, for such members, ACI 318M:19 table 22.5.5.1 requires the use of Eq.
1 𝑁𝑢
𝑉𝑐 = 0.66𝜆𝑠 𝜆 𝜌𝑤 3 𝑓𝑐 ′ + 𝑏 𝑑 Eq. A.3.2.1 Ref. 1 Table 22.5.5.1

1
𝑉𝑐 = 0.66𝜆 𝜌𝑤 3 𝑓𝑐 ′ 𝑏𝑓 𝑑

Where l is taken at 1.0 for normal-weight concrete and defined in ACI 318M:19 Table 19.2.4.1 (a)
