Tutorial Chapter 6

The document outlines various problems related to inverters with RL loads, including calculations for dc source requirements, total harmonic distortion (THD), and modulation indices for different configurations. It covers full-bridge and half-bridge inverters, quasi-square wave inverters, and the impact of frequency modulation on load currents. Additionally, it includes design specifications for achieving desired output voltages and THD levels.

Tutorial Chapter 3

1- A (full bridge) square-wave inverter has an RL load with R=15 and L=10 mH. The
inverter output frequency is 400 Hz.
(a) Determine the value of the dc source required to establish a load current that has a
fundamental frequency component of 8 A rms.
(b) Determine the THD of the load current.

2-For the full-bridge inverter, the dc source is 125 V, the load is a series RL connection with
R =10 and L = 20 mH, and the switching frequency is 60 Hz.
(a) Use the quasi square wave switching and determine the value of  to produce an output
with an amplitude of 90 V at the fundamental frequency.
(b) Determine the THD of the load current.

3-A quasi-square wave inverter is used to supply an RL series load with R = 10 and L = 35
mH. The dc input voltage is 200 V and the output frequency is 60 Hz. (a) Determine the rms
value of the fundamental frequency of the load current when = 0°.
(b) If the output fundamental frequency is lowered to 30 Hz, determine the value of 
required to keep the rms current at the fundamental frequency at the same value of part (a).

4-Determine the value of  that will eliminate the seventh harmonic from the quasi square
wave inverter. Specify the order of other harmonics that have been eliminated at the same
angle.

5- Derive the value of the phase-shift angle () that results minimum THD of the quasi-
square wave inverter (optimum).

6-The dc source supplying an inverter with a bipolar PWM output is 96 V. The load is an RL
series combination with R = 32 and L = 24 mH. The output has a fundamental frequency
of 60 Hz.
(a) Specify the amplitude modulation index (ma) to provide a 54-Vrms fundamental
frequency output.
(b) If the frequency modulation index (mf) is 17, determine the total harmonic distortion of
the load current.

7- The dc source supplying a half-bridge inverter with a bipolar PWM output is 250 V. The
load is an RL series combination with R =20 and L=50 mH. The output has a fundamental
frequency of 60 Hz.
(a) Specify the amplitude modulation ratio to provide a 80-V rms fundamental frequency
output.
(b) If the frequency modulation ratio is 31, determine the total harmonic distortion of the
load current.

8- Design an inverter that has a PWM output across an RL series load with R = 10 and L
=20 mH. The inverter is fed from a 220V dc link. The fundamental component of the output
voltage must be 124 Vrms at 60 Hz, and the total harmonic distortion of the load current
must be less than 8 percent. Specify (i) the modulation index, ma, and inverter topology (half
or full bridge), the modulation mode (bipolar or unipolar) and the switching frequency
(carrier frequency). Verify your design.

9-The three-phase full-bridge inverter operates in square wave mode has a Y-connected
resistive load of R = 6.5 Ω. The inverter frequency is fo = 400Hz and the dc input voltage is
Vs = 220V.
Express the instantaneous phase voltages and phase currents in a Fourier series.

10- The three-phase full-bridge inverter has a Y-connected load and each phase consists of R
= 4 Ω, L = 10mH. The inverter frequency is fo = 60Hz and the dc input voltage, Vs = 220V.
The inverter is controlled using PWM ma=0.9 and mf=21. Determine the THD of the load
current.
