Tutorial 1: Electrical Machines II (Synchronous Machine)
1. Calculate the fundamental, third and fifth harmonic breath (distribution) factors for a stator
with 36 slots wound for 3-phase, 4-poles. (0.96, 0.667, 0.218)
2. A 3-phase, 50 Hz, star-connected alternator with 2-layer winding is running at 600 rpm. It
has 12 turns/coil, 4 slots/pole/phase and coil pitch of 10 slots. If the flux/pole is 35 mWb
(sinusoidally distributed), find the phase and line EMFs induced. Assume that the total
turns/phase are series connected. (3451V, 5978V)
3. A 2-pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz synchronous machine has 42 slots. Each slot has two conductors in
a double layer winding. The coil pitch is 17 slots. Each phase winding has two parallel paths.
Calculate the flux/pole required to generate a line voltage of 2300 V. (0.94Wb)
4. A 3-phase, 16-pole synchronous generator has a star-connected winding with 144 slots and
10 conductors per slot. The flux per pole is 0.04 Wb (sinusoidally distributed) and the speed
is 375 rpm. Find the frequency and line induced EMF. The total turns/phase may be assumed
to be series connected. (50 Hz, 3543.6 V)
[Hint: Information about coil-pitch is not given, i.e., it is a full-pitched distributed winding]
5. A 3-phase, 50 Hz, 10 pole alternator with 90 slots has a star-connected winding to give a
generated EMF of 11kV at no-load. The coils are chorded by one slot. If the flux/pole is
0.11Wb, compute the number of series turns required for each phase of this alternator. (270)
