Challenge
Subtopics: Algebraic fractions, dividing polynomials, the factor theorem, mathematical proof, methods of proof

x 2 + 7 x + 10
1. Express , x ≠ ±2 as a single fraction in its simplest form. [3]
x2 − 4

2. a) Use the factor theorem to show that ( x − 3) is a factor of g ( x) = 2 x3 − 3x 2 − 11x + 6 [3]

b) Hence write g ( x) in the form ( x − 3) ( ax2 + bx + c ) where a, b and c are integers. [4]

3. a) Divide f ( x) = 4 x3 −12 x 2 − x + 3 by ( 2 x −1) [4]

b) Hence factorise f ( x) completely. [2]

4. Factorise completely f ( x) = x3 + 2 x 2 − x − 2 [5]

5. Express the following as a single fraction in its simplest form:

1 x+4 3
− , x ≠ 1, x ≠ − [4]
x − 1 ( x − 1)( 2 x + 3) 2

6. Let f ( x) = x3 + ax + b
Given that ( x − 3) and ( x + 2 ) are factors of f ( x), find the values of a and b. [6]

3x3 + 9 x 2 − 30 x x − 2
7. Prove that ≡ for every x ≠ 0, x ≠ −5 [4]
6 x 2 + 30 x 2

8. A student claims that the square of every odd number is one more than a multiple of 4. The student
gives the following proof:
Every odd number is of the form 2n + 1 for some integer n.

a) Identify the error made by the student. [1]

b) Prove that the claim is true by correcting the error in the student’s proof. [4]
