Synchronous Machines Tutorial - II

1. A 3-Phase, star-connected synchronous generator is rated at 10 kVA and has a reactance of

1.2 Ohm/phase and Ra = 0.9 Ohm/phase. Calculate i) % regulation at full-load, 0.8 pf lagging
ii) Find the load pf at which the voltage regulation is zero, at full load. [21.8%, 0.868 lead]
2. A 2000 kVA, 11 kV, star-connected alternator has the synchronous impedance of 0.3+j5
Ohm/phase. It delivers full load current at a pf of 0.8 lagging and the terminal voltage is kept
normal. Compute the terminal voltage for the same excitation and current at 0.8 pf leading.
[6978.5 V/phase]
3. A 30 MVA, 11 kV, 50 Hz, 6-pole, star-connected alternator has Zs = 0.005+0.7j p.u. Find the
load angle and pf in case the alternator is delivering rated current at rated voltage and
excitation emf is 1.5 p.u. [23.07 deg, 0.8436 lag]
4. A 3300 V, star-connected synchronous motor has a synchronous impedance of 0.4+5j
ohm/phase. For an excitation emf of 4000 V, and motor input power of 1000 kW at rated
voltage, compute the line current and pf. [184.45<18.490, 0.9483 lead]
5. A 230 V, 4-pole, 50 Hz, star-connected synchronous motor has Zs = 0.6+j3 ohm/phase. Its
field current is adjusted such that the motor draws 10 A at UPF from the rated voltage
supply. Now with the field current unchanged, the load on the motor is increased till it
draws 10 A from the supply. Find the torque developed and the new pf.
[0.954 lag, 78.45 Nm]
6. A 6.6 kV, star – connected synchronous motor works at constant voltage and constant
excitation. Its impedance Zs = 1.5+j12 Ohm/phase. When the input power is 1000 kW and pf
is 0.8 leading. Find the pf when the input is increased to 1500 kW. [0.9518 lead]
7. A salient-pole synchronous generator has the following p.u. parameters: Xd = 1.2 p.u., Xq =
0.8 p.u., Ra = 0.025 p.u. Compute the excitation voltage Ef, on p.u. basis, when the generator
is delivering rated kVA at rated voltage at a pf of 0.8 lag and 0.8 lead. [1.9701 p.u.]
