A. Introduction
“What I hear, I conceptualize. What I read, I understand. But what I
do, becomes part of who I am.”
- Anonymous
Learning must not just only be being passive and theoretical, it
should be relevant and applied. The best way to learn how to do
something is to do it and actively engaged in the learning process.
Nothing beats experience as the perfect learning tool but true
learning will be evident when experience produces an action. All of
these things are important to prepare an individual in his chosen
field and to give a glimpse of what lies ahead in the future.
On-the-job training (OJT) is training that is delivered while an
individual is performing tasks or processes related to their
particular occupation. The employee typically performs tasks that are
essential to their job function with the supervision of a manager,
coach or mentor. This type of training is typically used to broaden an
employee’s skill set and to increase productivity. (Training
Industry ,2018).
The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) degree
program of Lyceum NorthWestern University has included On-the-job
training course known as Civil Engineering Apprenticeship (ENGG-
CE_OJT). This course aims to give an individual a view of reality and
serves as a career-wise technique that will help aspiring civil
engineers who are soon to enter the professional world of engineering
to be more competitive in achieving certain goals in life. It requires
the students to undertake two hundred forty hours of training in their
chosen company/institutions which exposed the students in a real
situation of engineering works.
Apprenticeship also gives the opportunity to develop the sense of
professionalism, love of work, and commitment to the people they
serve. Moreover, it enhances the ability to interact in a wider
community through mutual relationship between the employees and
trainees that will be useful to the development of the organization
providing additional manpower for a lesser labor cost than a regular
employee.
Surpassing all the challenges and problems that might be
encountered during the training, OJT establishes a commendable quality
of resiliency and not to be afraid to make mistakes and start over
again with lessons learned. Lastly, through nice performance during
the training, which the apprentices can use as an advantage since
today there is a tight competition towards job seekers due to high
qualification of companies/firms.
Importance of Civil Engineering Apprenticeship
Civil engineering apprenticeship entails significant benefits
that could give apprentices helpful assets for achieving gainful
ideas. The training provides the students/apprentices the opportunity
to acquire sufficient knowledge and skills relevant to work habits.
Field practice has been designed to give student-trainees a place
which will strengthen their capability in preparation for their
profession to develop their physical, emotional, and social well-being
needed especially when encountering real problem in working
environment. It also gives the trainees the chance to personally
interact with the environment directly, engage in the activities at
the site, work with the processes to be learned, and observe the
actual work that each task can provide. All of these promote a deeper
understanding of the subject being studied and an improved ability to
recall the information and experiences, later, as needed.

Week 1
“For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn
by doing them.”
- Aristotle
Day 1 (June 24, 2024)
On the first day the weather was sunny. Architect
Danlee Solano oriented me about the projects they’re currently
handling and the safety rules and regulations. I was also
introduced to the employees and also I was invited to make a site
visit in a construction of a Two-Storey Residential building at
Lucao, Dagupan City, Pangasinan. I encountered there different
actual works like Plastering (see figure 1) and installation of
steel bar for flooring (see figure 2). I also got to familiarize
the tools and the machineries used in construction. These
experience made me excited for more days ahead.

Day 2 (June 25, 2024)
I arrived in the same site to make site visitation
again because I was assigned in the construction team. I inquire
some questions to Architect Solano who responded to all of my
questions. In there I witnessed just the continuation of
yesterday's activity like the plastering (see Figure 3) and other
new activities like installation of wires for electricity (see
Figure 4)
Figure 3: Plastering

Electricity
Day 3 (June 26, 2024)
I arrived at the same site at 7am so that I can check
the arrival delivery of the materials to be used in the
construction that day like the cement and plywood (see Figure 5)
After that, I went to another construction site at Caranglaan to
have a site visitation and also the foreman task me to go with
some other employees to drop some used woods and stones for
piling at the site (see figure 6).
Figure 5: Delivery of cement and plywoods
Figure 6: Unloading of used woods
and stones for piling
Day 4 (June 27, 2024)
On the fourth day I was task to do an estimation and
Architect Solano brielfy taught me and explain to me the design
and structural of the new project at Caranglaan (see fugure 7).
There's a lot more office works was task to me so it was a tardy
and stressful but enjoyable day.

Day 5 (June 28, 2024)
On the fifth day I went back to the site at Lucao and
there I witness the excavation of soil (see figure 8) and the
laying of CHB for footing (see figure 9). And the continuations
of the works like plastering.

Week 2
Day 7 (July 1, 2024)
It was 8am in the morning and I went straight to
Caranglaan site to witness how the Foreman and other mason lay
out the area (see Figure 1 & Figure 2) after the initial lay out,
the workers went straight to manual digging of soil (see Figure
3) but Architect Solano noticed that they are digging the wrong
side of the area, he told me that the workers should start
digging at the back rather than the side so that the loader can
easily pass the area for filling so the workers continued the
manual digging at the back (see Figure 4).

Day 8 (July 2, 2024)
I arrived in the same site at Caranglaan for another
site visitation as I was assigned to the construction team that
day. The foreman taught me how to lay out for the column of the
fence (see Figure 5) I also inquire some questions to the foreman
such as the area of the post and number of post that is needed
for the fence which he answered right away. I also helped the
workers in constructing the columns (see Figure 6) there is also
a problem encountered at the site specifically in the manual
excavation of soil, because of the water, the workers are slowed
down and is having a hard time digging (see figure 7)

Day 10 (July 4, 2024)
As soon as I arrived at the site in Caranglaan, we
conducted a tool box meeting. The engineer task me to explain to
the workers the load of their works for the day (see figure 10) I
also assign some of them to focus on the water pump for
extracting the water in the area (see Figure 11) so that they can
easily dig soil. As soon as we extract the water, the workers
easily dig the soil and we start the erection of column
reinforcement for the post (see Figure 12 & 13)

Day 15 (July 10, 2024)
On Wednesday, I’m still at the same site, I arrived
early and took a picture of the project (see Figure 5) I think it
was 70% done. I continued monitoring the tiles installation,
because the tiles delivery arrived, the workers started to
install (see Figure 6). There was a problem encountered because
of the broken tiles (see Figure 7) the wrokers are having a hard
time installing th etiles so the foreman instructed that they
should change to dry pack.

Day 16 (July 11, 2024)
I went to Caranglaan that day to monitor the site as
per requested by Engineer Cabrera because the workers will start
concreting the wall footings (see figure 8) there’s also a
problem encountered that day because of the water, but instead of
using the water pump, the foreman instructed the workers to just
use dry cements for the (see Figure 9) we also have a small feat
because we cook tinolang manok as a get together after a tiring
day (see Figure 10)

XII. Learning
I learned that in the construction, manpower is really
important to make the work easily and fast. I also gain different
knowledge about the actual work at the construction site and also
the tools and machineries used. I still have a lot of knowledge
that I want to learn in construction in align with what I aim
for. I also learned how to do estimation, and also for the tiles.
It’s important to put rocks at the bottom of the metal bars for
columns so that the metal bars won’t be rusty in time for the
“buhos”
I learned CHB installing and also the concreting and
how it is done as I watch every step of it and in form works, the
workers usually just re-use the dismantled formworks from the dry
concreting to use it for the other columns, which means they do
not need to cut and form new ones specially the columns are on
the same area.
In my on-the-job training i learned the gap between
academic knowledge and real-world application. It also enhances
my technical skills in construction practices and material
testing while I’m fostering a deep understanding about the plans.
I gain insights into project management also in
maintaining project timelines. Problem solving also become my
second nature because I address specific challenges like
unexpected soil conditions and equipment failures. Communication
is also a skill that I learned through talking and listening to
my superiors as I comply with workplace regulations.
