CAPSTONE AND RESEARCH GUIDELINES

The following are the general guidelines for the capstone and research project for B.S. in
Information Technology at the College of Information and Communications Technology.

1. Student-researchers enrolled in the capstone and Research 1 must be in their third year.
Lower-year students are not permitted to take the capstone and research courses.
2. Each capstone and research team must be composed of two (2) members with a maximum
of four (4) members as per CMO 25 Series 2015. It is encouraged that students work in
teams to develop their sense of teamwork and collaboration. This is one of the graduate
attributes that the college aims to develop among the students.
3. The concept of the capstone and research project can be an innovation, an upgrade or
enhancement of an existing project, or automation. No existing capstone project or
ongoing software or network development project is allowed. It is suggested that capstone
and research projects be aligned with institutional or college research agendas, major
accreditation areas, community-based problems, sustainable development goals, and
socially relevant projects.
4. The capstone and research project must undergo three stages: 1. a concept paper proposal
presentation; 2. a capstone and research project proposal presentation; and 3. a final oral
presentation.
a. The title proposal presentation must be presented before the capstone and
research instructor or professor. It is the responsibility of the capstone and research
instructor/professor to weigh in on the validity, complexity, and suitability of the
project to the area of specialization the students are taking. This must be done no
later than the second week of February. The expected output of this stage is the
capstone matrix and the approved working concept.
b. Following the title presentation, the capstone and research instructor or professor
must recommend prospective faculty members with expertise in the project under
consideration as advisers. Faculty members with a specific specialization must be
prioritized over those with other specializations. The capstone teacher and advisers
are co-authors with the student researchers. A request letter for the recommended
adviser shall be given prior to the commencement of the project under the
guidance of the capstone and research adviser.
Capstone and research instructors or professors must also recommend who
will serve as the team's research editor or English critic. It is recommended that
research editors or English critics have experience in research, technical writing,
and publication. It is important that the research editor and English critic guide the
student researchers from the beginning up until the end of the project.
c. The capstone and research proposal presentation (ITCAP01, 2nd semester) must
consist of Chapters 1 and 2 of the manuscript, all the required diagrams and plans,
30% or more of the systems for DST and WST, and the prototype of the network
design for NST. This shall serve as the final requirement of the course, IT-CAP01.
The research proposal presentation must be held no later than the last week of
April. The student-researchers will be given ample time to revise the manuscript
according to the suggestions of the panel members during the proposal

presentation. The revisions to the manuscript must be presented before the end of
the semester to their capstone instructor based on the recommendation slip. The
revised manuscript will serve as their final output for ITCAP01. The student-
researchers shall seek assistance from an English critic.
d. Preferably, the selection of the panel of examiners must be in accordance with the
research topic of the student-researchers. The proposal and final oral defense will
be heard by the same panel of examiners.
5. The format of the paper and the expected results for each specialization must be followed
by the student researchers. Seven (7) copies must be submitted.
