CHAPTER : I

INTRODUCTION

● Introduction :-
Withthe current depletion of fossil fuels and its price hike, there is a need
for another energy resource to run the vehicle. The automobile sector is
considering Electric Vehicle as a solution to the industry and
environment in India. Electric Vehicles are the replacement for
petroleum-based vehicles. They are one of the emerging technologies
as well as ceo friendly and viable. The replacement of internal
combustion engines with electric engines will reduce pollution to a great
extent and be profitable to consumers. Many countries around theglobe
have implemented this technology and are contributing towards
betterment of the environment. The world's population is growing at a
rate of about 1.1% annually, which is hurting our natural resources
because more people use up more of the earth's resources as a result of
increased demand Because they don't emit any emissions, electric cars
are better for the environment than traditional automobiles.
7

Electric cars run on electric motors that are powered by rechargeable

batteries, mostly lithium-ion batteries rather than conventional fuels like
gasoline, diesel, or compressed natural gas. In 2019, approximately
2.1million electric cars were sold worldwide, bringing the total number of
electric cars in the global fleet to a staggering 7.2 million .world is the
largest market for electric vehicles, accounting forapproximately 45
percent of the market. While sales of automobiles have slowed over the
past year, sales of electric vehicles EVs have continued to be good
thanks to various government grants and subsidies. India is one of the
most important markets in the world for automobile manufacturers. India
produced approximately 3.77 million automobiles in2018,a 7.3%increase
from the previous year. In terms of sales, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and
Tata Motors are the major players, with 3.38 million cars sold, or 5%
more than the previous year ..

In India, the major automobile giants that have introduced electric cars
are Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra, and MG Motors . The total sales
figures for all EVs increased by 20% when compared to 2018-2019. In
2019-2020, there were approximately3400 sales of electric cars. This
paper explains in detail how Tata Motors Limited rose to the top of the
electric vehicle market in terms of production and sales
Known sales year 2024 In 2024, Tata Motors remained the top electric
vehicle (EV) seller in India, with sales exceeding 60,000 units, and
overall Indian EV sales increased by 20% to nearly 100,000 units. Tata's
8

EV sales saw a decline in early 2025, but the company continues to lead
the EV market

Chapter . V
Limitation and Assumption
1.)Limited sample size and scope of tatamoters EV

When considering the "limited sample size and scope" of Tata Motors
EVs, it's important to look at the context of the Indian EV market. Here's
a breakdown:
Tata Motors' Market Dominates :
● Tata Motors has a significant lead in the Indian electric passenger
vehicle market. This means that their sales data provides a
relatively comprehensive view of the current state of EV adoption
in India.
● Therefore, while any sample size can have limitations, Tata motors
sales figures, provide a very large sample size relating to the
indian EV market.
1).Data Insights:
• Tata Motors has released data revealing interesting trends:Significant
EV sales are coming from outside major metropolitan areas. A notable
portion of buyers are first-time car owners
• They have released data based on over 100,000 EV sales. This is a
considerable sample size.
•While Tata Motors is a leader, the overall Indian EV market is still
developing.
• Factors like charging infrastructure limitations and affordability remain
challenges that affect the scope of EV adoption.
•Therefore, while Tata motors has a large sample size of current EV
owners, the overall scope of potential EV owners in india is still very
large, and growing.
2)Continued Growth:
Tata Motors is actively expanding its EV portfolio, which will broaden the
scope of available options. As the charging infrastructure improves, EV
adoption is expected to increase, further expanding the sample size and
scope.
In essence, while there are always limitations, Tata Motors' strong
market position provides valuable insights into the Indian EV landscape.
45

2.)Assumption made about the representativeness of the sample of tatamoters

EV

When considering the representativeness of a sample of Tata Motors EV

data, several key assumptions and factors come into play:
•Market Share and Dominance:
Tata Motors holds a significant portion of the EV market share in India.
This means that a large sample of their EV owners likely provides a
relatively accurate reflection of the overall Indian EV landscape.
Therefore, it is often assumed that data gathered from Tata Motors EV
owners will be largely representative of the current Indian EV market.
• Sample Size and Diversity:
The validity of any sample relies on its size and diversity. When Tata
Motors releases data based on "over 100,000 EVs sold," this large
sample size strengthens the assumption of representativeness.
Furthermore, information about the geographic distribution of sales
(e.g., 50% from outside the top 20 cities) helps assess the sample's
diversity.
• Usage Patterns:
Assumptions are made about how accurately the collected data
reflects real-world driving conditions and usage patterns.
Tata motors use of the C75 test cycle, is an attempt to create a more
realistic test enviroment, and therefore increase the representativeness
of the data.
• Consumer Demographics:
Data concerning first-time buyers and gender demographics (e.g., 24%
female buyers) contributes to understanding the sample's composition.
It is assumed that this demographic information is accurately
gathered, and represents the true demographic of the consumers.
•Charging Habits:
Information about home charging vs. public charging is also relevant.
If the sample accurately reflects the percentage of users charging at
home versus public charging stations, then the data will be more
representative.
In essence, the assumption of representativeness is strengthened by
Tata Motors' strong market position, large sample sizes, and efforts to
capture diverse usage and demographic data.
46

3.)Potential biases in data collection and analysis tatamoters EV

When analyzing data related to Tata Motors EVs, or any EV data, it's
crucial to be aware of potential biases that can skew the results. Here
are some key areas where biases can arise:
1. Data Collection Biases:
Self-Selection Bias:
If data is collected through voluntary surveys or app usage, those who
are more satisfied or dissatisfied with their EVs are more likely to
participate, leading to a skewed representation.
Those who are very happy, or very angry, are more likely to respond to
surveys.
• Geographic Bias:
Data might be concentrated in urban areas with better charging
infrastructure, neglecting the experiences of rural EV users. Tata motors
does release data regarding the geographic spread of their sales, which
is helpful to mitigate this, but it is still a potential bias.
• Charging Infrastructure Bias: Data on charging habits could be biased towards
those with easy access to home charging or public charging stations,
excluding those who face charging challenges.
• Reporting Bias: Consumers might underreport or overreport certain issues,
such as range anxiety or battery performance, due to social desirability
or personal expectations.
2. Data Biases:Analysis
•Algorithm Bias:
If data analysis relies on algorithms, those algorithms could be biased if
they are trained on non-representative data.
•Confirmation Bias: Analysts might unconsciously prioritize data that confirms
their existing beliefs about EVs, while overlooking contradictory
evidence.
• Sampling Bias:
If the sampling of data is not random, and does not accurately reflect
the demographics of the population of Tata EV owners, then the data will
be biased.
•Measurement Bias:
47

The way that metrics are measured can introduce bias. For example, if
"range" is measured in optimal conditions, rather than real world
conditions, it will give a biased view of the vehicle's true capabilities.
3).Specific Tata Motors EV Context:
• Early Adopter Bias:
Early Tata EV adopters might have different usage patterns and
expectations than later adopters, potentially skewing long-term data.
•Software Updates:
Changes in software through over-the-air updates can significantly
impact EV performance, making it difficult to compare data collected at
different times.
To mitigate these biases, it's essential to:
● Use diverse data sources.
● Employ robust statistical methods.
● Clearly define data collection and analysis procedures.
● Be transparent about potential limitations.
By acknowledging and addressing these potential biases, we can gain a
more accurate and reliable understanding of Tata Motors EV
performance and consumer experiences.
48
