Read the information about the Atacama Desert. Are the sentences true () or false ()?
Write or on the lines.
The Atacama Desert
The Atacama Desert is in Chile, in South America. It is 130 000 km 2 and it is older than all the other
deserts on Earth. In the Sahara Desert, the temperature is sometimes 50 °C, but in the Atacama Desert it
is usually only 18 °C.
It hardly ever rains there and it is drier than the Sahara Desert. Scientists go to the Atacama Desert to
look at the stars and planets through telescopes because there are about 330 nights every year without
any clouds.
The Atacama Desert does not support much life, but some very, very tiny animals called microbes can
live there. Scientists think that the planet Mars could also support the same kind of life!

You can use one or two words. You can write a number, too.
The Eiffel Tower
My name’s Laila, and I’m
visiting Paris, the capital city of
France, with my family. Today
we’ve come to see something
very special: I’m at the Eiffel
Tower. It’s amazing! It’s a
metal tower and it’s 324
metres tall.
The tower was built for a
special event in Paris in 1889. It
was built by a man called
Gustave Eiffel. Now it’s one of
the most famous landmarks in
the world and at least 25,000
people visit it every day!
People can visit three floors of
the Eiffel Tower. There are
restaurants on the first and
second floors and we got
tickets to go up to the third
floor. There are lots of stairs,
but we came up in lifts. The
views are spectacular and I feel
very lucky!
Now I’m looking at the city and
I can see a beautiful rainbow
far away. What a fantastic day!

My weekend
Mei
I went to stay with my grandparents at the weekend. They live in a bungalow. It isn’t very big,
but it’s modern and comfortable. We picked apples in the garden and I read a book about some
clever children who designed a robot. In the evenings, we played games in the kitchen. One night,
we heard loud claps of thunder and saw a lot of lightning through the window. It was spectacular!
Pat
I went to the coast with my mum. Every morning we went swimming at the beach and then we
went to a café for a big lunch. I always had some really fantastic carrot cake for dessert! In the
afternoons, we went back to the beach and I read a book about a family who went to Iceland
and saw the northern lights. I’d like to do that when I’m older!
Rayan
I stayed at home with my parents and my brother and sister. I planted carrots, squash and
beans with my mother in the garden. Every evening, we watched the sunset. When I went to
bed, I read a book about three children who are the same age as me. They went out in a little
boat at night, but they weren’t afraid. I’d love to be like them!
Example:
0 Who went to a house without any stairs?
a Mei b Pat c Rayan
23 Who has a family that is growing vegetables? [1]
a Mei b Pat c Rayan
24 Who ate something which tasted delicious? [1]

Part 6
Anna is talking to an environmentalist called Paul. Read the interview and the questions below.
For each question, circle the correct answer.
Interview with an environmentalist
Anna: What’s your job, Paul?
Paul: I’m an environmentalist. I think that protecting the environment and endangered wildlife
is really important. The problems that our planet has are enormous. Sometimes people
think that they can’t do much to help, but that’s not true.
Anna: What’s one of the most important problems?
Paul: Well, plastic rubbish in the sea can hurt or kill turtles, fish and other animals. When
people go shopping, they often buy food in lots and lots of plastic. We can’t recycle all of
this plastic, so we shouldn’t use so much of it.
Anna: Do you live in an eco-house?
Paul: Yes, I do, actually. I started living there five years ago. It was built 13 years ago by a
conservationist who lived there for eight years and then sold it to me.
Anna: What’s your house made from?
Paul: The walls are made of stone and mud. For the roof, first they used wood, then they put
grass on top of it. I have solar panels to provide electricity.
Anna: Do you have any habits that you’re going to change?
Paul: I haven’t eaten meat since I was 18, but I’m keen on cheese and other things made of
milk. I’ll stop eating those, and eat more rice, fruit and vegetables. That’s my promise for
the future!
