Chapter 1 Introduction To Digital Electronics

Digital electronics utilize digital signals instead of analog signals, forming the basis for various consumer products like computers and mobile phones. They offer advantages such as reduced noise impact, lower costs, faster transmission rates, and greater flexibility compared to analog systems. Digital circuits enable efficient data processing and storage, providing higher speeds and lower power consumption.

DIGITAL ELECTRONICS
CHAPTER 1:
OVERVIEW OF DIGITAL ELECTRONICS
• Identifying digital products
• Advantages of digital
• Digital signals
• Why use digital circuits
DIGITAL ELECTRONICS

❑ Digital electronics are those electronics systems - use a

digital signal instead of an analog signal.

❑ Digital electronics is the study of electronic circuits that

are used to process and control digital signals.

❑ Digital electronics are the most common representation

of Boolean algebra and are the basis of all digital
circuits for computers, mobile phones, and numerous
other consumer products.

ADVANTAGES OF DIGITAL
Less impact of noise, less distortion:
Digital devices translate and reassemble data and in the process are more prone to loss of
quality as compared to analog devices.

Less Expensive:
Digital signals gave better quality and are less expensive when compared to analog
transmission. Digital circuits can be reproduced easily in mass quantities at comparatively low
costs.

Faster Rate of Transmission:

They can be compressed more efficiently using less bandwidth on the electromagnetic
spectrum. This bandwidth is a limited resource and less usage of this enables usage by other
communication systems such as mobile phone networks, etc.

More flexible:
DSP operations can be altered using digitally programmable systems.
SIGNALS
• The analog signals were used in many systems to
produce signals to carry information.
• These signals are continuous in both values and time.
• The use of analog signals has been declined with the
Analog signal arrival of digital signals.
• All signals that are natural or come naturally are analog
signals.

• Digital signals are not continuous, but signals are discrete in

value and time.
Digital signal • These signals are represented by binary numbers and consist
of different voltage values.
Difference Between Analog And Digital Signal

Analog Signals Digital Signals

Continuous signals Discrete signals
Represented by sine waves Represented by square waves

Human voice, natural sound, analog electronic Computers, optical drives, and other electronic
devices are a few examples devices

Continuous range of values Discontinuous values

Records sound waves as they are Converts into a binary waveform.

Only used in analog devices. Suited for digital electronics like computers,
mobiles and more.
WHY USE DIGITAL CIRCUIT?

❑ Binary systems and electronic design automation (EDA) tools and

software enable electrical engineers to use digital circuits to
efficiently design technology and electronics.

❑ Digital circuits allow for data transmission, storage, and retrieval

without the noise associated with analog circuits.

❑ The digital circuits have higher processing speed than analog

circuits.

❑ The power consumed by the digital circuits is relatively less.
