INTRODUCTION
Each of you has been given your unique quadratic relation to work with for this project. You are asked to write a report
explaining the different characteristics of the given quadratic relation, the various methods for finding zeros, the steps
for graphing your quadratic relation, and an example of a parabola in the real world.
REQUIREMENTS
The project should contain the following:
- a cover page with your name, title of the project and given relation
- four parts described below
Each part should start on a new page and should be titled.
Part 1 - Characteristics of a Quadratic
Write a paragraph describing the characteristics of your quadratic relation.
Following information must be included.
1- Direction of Parabola
Does the parabola open upward or downward? How can this be determined from the equation describing quadratic
relation? You need a statement such as, “...parabola for this relation opens ____ because _________...“
2 - What is the equation for your axis of symmetry?
You must include the formula you used to find the axis of symmetry and the work you did to find the equation.
You should have a statement that says, “The axis of symmetry is ___.”
3 - What are the coordinates of the vertex of your parabola?
You must include all of the work that you did in order to find the vertex, as well as a statement that says, “The
vertex is located at ( ___ , ___ ).”

4 - Maximum/Minimum
You should describe how you determine if the relation has a maximum or minimum value and what that value is.
You should include statements that say something like “...parabola has a __________ because ____________. “
and “The maximum/minimum value of this quadratic relation is ___.”
5 - Y-Intercept
You must describe how you find the y-intercept and include a statement that says, “The y-intercept for this
relation is ( ___ , ___ ).”
6 - Other points of the parabola.
You must show how you find three other points on your parabola. One of the points must be found by using the
symmetry of the parabola.
Part 2 - Methods to Solve a Quadratic Equation
1 - What is the discriminant? What does it tell us about quadratic equations?
The statements "The discriminant is used to ________ " and “There are________ zeros/roots to this quadratic
equation” should be included.
2 - What are the roots/zeros/x-intercepts of your parabola?
You must find the roots of your relation in three ways:
Solve by Factoring
Solve using Quadratic Formula
Solve by Completing the Square
Also include a statement that says, “The roots of this quadratic equation are ( ___ , ___ ) and ( ___ , ___ ).
Part 3 - Graphing a Quadratic Function
This section will contain two separate graphs created using different methods on graph paper.
Your graph must indicate the scale being used on each axis. All important points of the parabola need to be included
and labelled. Make sure to label the axis and your curve.
Graph your relation using two methods.
1 - From Standard Form:
Create a table of values with at least 7 points.
Graph and label the axis of symmetry as a dotted or highlighted line.
Graph quadratic function
2 - From Vertex Form:
Show steps to convert the equation from standard to vertex form.
Use complete sentences to describe the transformation from the graph of the relation y = x2 to the graph of your
relation.
Label and highlight (in different colours) both - the y= x2 relation and the transformed relation on the same gridline.

Part 4 - Parabolas in the Real World
This section will examine an example of a parabola in the real world. Use a magazine or internet picture to find a
picture, or take your own photograph of an object or process with a parabolic shape.

4- Locate vertex and roots from the graph.
5- Find the equation of the parabola in vertex form and convert it to standard form.
6- Choose an x-value to the right and the left of the vertex (not symmetrical points, but on your graph) and use the
equation you created to find y coordinates for these two points.
7 - Plot calculated points on transparency.
8 - Explain why (or why not) the points were on (or not on) your graphed relation and what this could mean about the
structure or your quadratic relation.
The report should be organized, colourful, and neat. Please attach a copy of an evaluation rubric to the end of the
report.
