Cautions on Use and Storage

Connect the power cable plug to a 3-pin grounded socket.

Do NOT use the system in an oxygen-rich environment.

The use in an oxygen-rich environment may cause fatal or serious injuries or
damage to the system due to easy ignition.

Be sure to use the system under the following environmental

conditions:
The installation of a dedicated air-conditioner in the examination room
is recommended if the building air-conditioner cannot meet the
necessary environmental conditions.

• Atmosphere: No explosive or corrosive gases

• Using/Storage temperature: 10 to 40 °C

• Relative humidity: 30 to 85% (no condensation)

• Atmospheric pressure: 800 to 1060 hPa

Note also that there must be no sudden change in temperature or
humidity.
This causes condensation, which can lead to system failure.

viii MobileArt Evolution OPERATION MANUAL M503-E027

Preface

Cautions on Radiography
1

1
Restrict all persons other than the patient from accessing the
equipment in accordance with local regulations.
To avoid unnecessary exposure, acceptable distances (maximum access
1
values) to the equipment by any person other than the patient are defined for
each region.
1

1
The equipment can be operated only by qualified personnel, such as
radiology technicians or those with equivalent qualifications.
1

1
No person but the operator and the patient are allowed to stay in the
examination room during X-ray irradiation. 1
If the equipment is not used correctly, the operator, the patient, and other
persons may receive a greater dose of radiation than necessary. The
operator must control X-ray irradiation from a distance over 2 m from the focal
spot and the X-ray beam and also must take adequate measures to protect 1
themselves against radiation (protective apron, screen, etc. are compliant
with IEC61331-3).
* During radiography, the radiography indicator illuminates and the buzzer
sounds an audible warning. 1

1
M503-E027 MobileArt Evolution OPERATION MANUAL ix
Preface

Perform X-ray irradiation carefully and according to the doctor's

directions when using the system with expectant mothers, women who
suspect they are pregnant, lactating women, or children.
Particular ways of using the system may increase the scatter dose absorbed
into the patient, which may cause a radiation hazard.

Always check the X-ray exposure region using the collimator lamp.
Irradiating a patient with X-rays outside the required region risks exposure of
the patient to unnecessary radiation.

During X-ray irradiation, ensure that the X-rays irradiate the necessary
region only.
To avoid unnecessary exposure, narrow down the collimator and take
protection measures, such as wearing a protective apron.

Do NOT place any unnecessary object in the location within the X-ray
exposure region.
Doing so may result in unnecessary radiation exposure to the patient.

x MobileArt Evolution OPERATION MANUAL M503-E027

Preface

Be sure to carry out a warm-up (running-in operation of the X-ray tube 1

unit) before taking an X-ray radiograph.
Follow the warm-up procedure described in the X-ray high voltage generator
operation manual.
^ Reference "3.2 Warm-up the X-Ray Tube Unit" P.3-6
1

Perform the warm-up if an arc occurs. 1

Suddenly using the X-ray tube unit near the nominal X-ray tube voltage
(above 100 kV) after using the unit at a relatively low tube voltage (80 kV
max.) for a prolonged period may result in arc. This arc occurs due to loss of
the warm-up effect at high tube voltage after the X-ray tube unit is used at a
1
relatively low tube voltage for a prolonged period.
^ Reference "3.2 Warm-up the X-Ray Tube Unit" P.3-6

1
Do NOT perform unnecessary standby operations.
If standby status continues after the radiography preparation button is 1
pressed, wire disconnection or withstand voltage failure may result owing to
the evaporation of the X-ray tube filament.

1
In order to minimize the radiation dose on the patient, make the
distance between the focus and the patient's body surface as long as
possible (Minimum 45 cm).
1
The shorter the distance becomes, the greater the amount of scatter dose
absorbed into the patient, which may cause a radiation hazard.

1
M503-E027 MobileArt Evolution OPERATION MANUAL xi
Preface

Pay extra attention when irradiating X-rays for a long time or repeatedly.
It may cause a radiation hazard.

Avoid prolonged contact with the X-ray tube unit directly after
radiography.
Prolonged contact may cause low temperature burn.

System Movement Cautions

When moving the arm unit or system, the operator must pay close
attention to ensure that the limbs of both operator and patient are not
caught between the system and any peripheral units.
Be especially careful when near a wall, changing the direction of the system
or moving it backwards.

xii MobileArt Evolution OPERATION MANUAL M503-E027

Preface

Avoid collisions and overturning. 1

Collisions and overturning can not only damage the system, but can also
cause serious injury.
Be careful of the following points when moving the system: 1
• When on a slope, in an entrance, or encountering obstacles, move the

ascending a steep slope.
1
• Do NOT move the system on a slope steeper than 7 degrees or over steps
higher than 2 cm. When stopping the system, always park the system on a
level place, avoiding slopes, since there is a danger of the system rolling
down the slope and overturning. 1
• Moving the system along surfaces that cause strong vibrations, such as
roads outdoors, over large steps and down steep slopes is dangerous.
Avoid these if possible. Do NOT stop the system on a slope. 1
• When moving the system, look out for any obstacles in front of it.

1
Cautions on Cleaning and Disinfection

Be sure to turn the system power OFF before cleaning and disinfecting 1
the system.
Otherwise, a malfunction may occur in the system, or the system may
operate in an unintended way.
Also, thoroughly ventilate the room before turning ON the power after
1
disinfection work is complete.

1
Be sure to clean and disinfect the system.
Cleaning and disinfection is very important to ensure that the system can be
used hygienically and safely. Strictly follow the methods prescribed.
1

• Spray-gas type disinfectants

• Volatile disinfectants

• Disinfectants that may enter the system

xiv MobileArt Evolution OPERATION MANUAL M503-E027

Preface

Use disinfectants at a minimum. 1

Repeated disinfection over a long time may lead to discoloring and cracking
on the system surface, and deterioration of rubber and plastic. If any
abnormality is found on the system after disinfection, stop using the system
immediately. Contact your Shimadzu service representative for repair. 1

• Never use paint thinners or other organic solvents, other than rubbing alcohol for
disinfection.
1
• Film-developing or fixing solutions will cause discoloration.
Wipe off immediately with a damp cloth.
1
• Make sure no moisture enters the dose area product meter during cleaning. After
cleaning, dry it thoroughly before use.

1
Cautions Relating to Cellular Telephones

Do NOT bring any cellular telephones or related devices into the 1

1 Overview

1.1 Applications
The MobileArt Evolution is a general purpose mobile digital X-ray system, which can be moved
freely throughout a hospital to directly obtain X-ray images of various areas of the body.

Do NOT use the system for any other purpose than indicated above.
Do NOT connect the system to any other equipment, either by electrical
or mechanical means, or modify the system.

1.2 Principle
A portable design and the ability to operate on rechargeable batteries enable a single staffer to
transport the system to any location within a building. The system is generally used for bedside X-
ray radiography and radiography during surgery.
During X-ray radiography, X-rays are irradiated from the X-ray tube unit and detected at a manual
X-ray film cassette or photo-stimulated luminescence cassette after passing through the patient's
body, and the captured image is recorded.
When using the optional FPD upgrade kit, X-rays that pass through the patient's body are detected by
the flat panel detector. The captured image is then recorded to the system's internal memory device
while a reference image is displayed on the touch screen monitor. Images can be subjected to various
types of image processing (high power type (32 kW) only).
In addition, captured images can be transferred outside the system via an external network.

1.3 Features

1.3 Features 1
‹ Reliable, High Image Quality
There are two selections for MobileArt Evolution: the standard type with enhanced mobility and
handiness, and the high power type (32 kW max.) allowing shorter time exposure. Even for a patient
1
who has difficulty maintaining a fixed posture, sharp images with reduced blurring can be obtained.
The specification differences between the two types are as follows:
Type Maximum Power Tube Voltage Focus
1
Standard Type (12.5 kW) 12.5 kW 40 to 125 kV 0.7 mm

High Power Type (32 kW) 32 kW 40 to 133 kV 0.7 / 1.3 mm

1
‹ Smooth and Quiet Movement
Power-assisted technology allows moving the system easily and quietly.
1
‹ Compact Design
Excellent forward visibility allows moving freely through even tight spaces.
Depending on the height of column, there are the tall column type (Type T) and the short column
type (Type S).
1
‹ Easy Positioning
The system can be freely and quickly maneuvered into position using the Inch-Mover buttons to
move the main body and to swivel the column to move the X-ray tube unit.
1
‹ High Frequency Inverter
Using a high-frequency inverter which generates high voltage (with a maximum frequency of
60 kHz) provides efficient X-ray generation with low-ripple distortion.
1
‹ Standard Anatomical Programs
Anatomical programs (APR) are installed as standard, to easily allow setting radiography
parameters.
1
‹ Cordless System
The built-in battery enables the obtaining of X-ray images without plugging in the system.
1
‹ Status Indicator Lamp
The status indicator lamp illuminates or blinks in response to X-ray exposure or system
abnormalities. This allows a visual confirmation of the system status.
1
‹ FPD Upgrade (Only for High Power Type (32 kW))
If the DR system is equipped, the DR radiography can be made available.

Immediate Response 1
A reference image appears on the display in about 3 seconds, allowing on-site image confirmation.

High Throughput
Improves workflow by eliminating the need to prepare a cassette, develop images, or read CR plates,
and by the hospital internal network to send image data to an imager or PACS.

3.3 Moving the System

This section describes the posture for moving the system, the travel modes and how to stop moving.
In order to use safely, move the system with adequate understanding of this section.

3.3.1 Posture for moving the system

• To move the system, hold the grip bar securely.

Do NOT operate the grip bar using only one hand, or underhanded.
Doing so can result in not only operation errors and system damage, but
may also cause serious accident leading to injury or death.

• Do NOT lay your hand on the bar retaining cover when holding the
grip bar.
If you hold the grip bar while laying your hand on the cover, a force may
apply toward the rear, causing the system to suddenly accelerate and
move backward.

Bar retaining cover

3-8 MobileArt Evolution OPERATION MANUAL M503-E027

3.3 Moving the System

• When driving the system where people are present, near equipment, 3
or close to a wall, drive slowly to be able to stop immediately and
maintain safety in the surroundings.

• Do NOT touch the brake release bar unless intending to move the
system.
3
Doing so will release the brake, allowing the system to move
unexpectedly.
^ Reference "2.2 Grip Bar" P.2-3 3
• If the battery indicator is not illuminated, immediately charge the
battery.

• If the system moves abnormally, immediately stop using the system 3

and contact your Shimadzu service representative.

• The operator may experience static electric shock when moving the
3
system if their body has become statically charged, depending on
conditions such as humidity and type of clothing.

• When the [PAS] or [Acc] value for power-assist settings has been 3
changed, not only forward but also backward movement will be influenced.
To maintain the same backward movement, adjust the [bAc] value
accordingly.

3.3.2 Travel Mode and Inch-Mover Buttons

3

3
• When moving the system, make sure that there are no obstacles
ahead.
The obstacle detector may not be able to detect light weight obstacles in
3
front of it, such as IV stands or cables from other equipment. Hitting an IV
stand or running over cables from other equipment could be very
dangerous to patients.
3
• Do NOT move the system over any steps or bumps greater than 2 cm,
or slopes steeper than 7 degrees. Always stop the system on a level
surface and avoid sloped surfaces.
Failure to do so may cause the system to roll down the slope or tip over. 3
• Do NOT operate this system outdoors.
This system is designed for indoor use only. Using this system outdoors
may lead to system failure.
3
The system can be moved using the normal travel mode, low-speed travel mode, or inch-mover
buttons.
By squeezing the brake release bar on the lower surface of the grip bar and pushing on the bar, the 3
system moves in the direction it is pushed. In addition, the system's power-assist technology allows
changing the travel speed according to how much force is applied.

J Normal Travel Mode

3
The system is in the normal travel mode when the arm is locked.
^ Reference "3.4.1 Locking and Releasing the Arm" P.3-16

Maximum speed is about 5 km/h.

3
(Maximum instantaneous travel speed: 6 km/h, may vary depending on condition)

* Travel characteristics can be changed. 3

See "4.1 User Settings" P.4-2.

J Low-Speed Travel Mode

If the arm is not locked, the system will automatically select the low-speed travel mode. 3

3
M503-E027 MobileArt Evolution OPERATION MANUAL 3-11
3 Basic Operation

The traveling speed of the system will be limited to about half the normal speed and the degree of
power-assist is limited to about half of its normal level.

• Do Not move the system over bumps or other floor-level changes in

low-speed travel mode.
The system may tip over if the arm is not locked.

• Do Not move the system over slopes steeper than 5 degrees.

J Inch-Mover Buttons
Holding down the inch-mover buttons with the arm unlocked allows the movement of the system
forward or backward more slowly than in the low-speed travel mode. Maximum speed is about 5 cm/
s.
The inch-mover buttons can be operated continuously for about 10 seconds.
To continue using the buttons, press them again.
Motor power is lower than in the low-speed travel mode. If the system cannot be moved due to thick-
piled carpet, or other resistance, use the grip bar.
The system does not move if both inch-mover buttons are pressed simultaneously, or pressing one of
the buttons while the other is already pressed.

6.5 Storing the System for a Long Period

Avoid leaving the system unused for extended periods.

If the system is not to be used for an extended period, follow the procedures below to
reduce battery wear. This does not, however, extend battery life. Shimadzu does not
guarantee the battery life even if the following procedures are implemented.

6.5.1 Storage Procedure

1 Fully charge the battery before storing the system.

2 After charging, turn the main circuit breaker OFF.

3 While storing the system, keep the ambient temperature between -10 °C
and 40 °C.
It is recommended to keep the temperature below 30 °C.

4 Recharge battery once every 6 months during storage (given that ambient
temperature is 25 °C).
Double this frequency for every 10 °C increase in ambient temperature above 25 °C.

5 After storing the system for an extended period, run the system until the
battery indicator displays no illuminated portion, then charge the battery
and repeat this cycle several times to restore battery performance.

9.1 Information on Radiation

9.1.1 Radiation Protection

To minimize X-ray exposure on patients and medical staff, the operator must observe
the local laws and regulations specified in each region, as well as the following
precautions. It is also highly recommended to study and know about the
recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP).

9.1.2 Principle

Limit X-ray irradiation to the minimum.

9.1.3 For Radiation Protection of Patients

• If there is any possibility that the regions easily affected by radiation (eye balls, gonad, etc.)
are irradiated by X-ray, be sure to protect those regions.
• Adjust X-ray irradiation field appropriately to avoid X-ray irradiation to the area other than
the region of interest.
• Keep the focus-skin distance as long as possible.

9.1.4 For Radiation Protection of Medical Staff

If for some reason another person has to be in the examination room, that person must take adequate
measures to protect themselves against radiation (protective apron, screen, etc.).

9.1.5 Entrance surface dose - reference value

The reference values of entrance surface dose brought with the typical conditions are listed below.

Tube Entrance
Body Tube voltage
Area Direction currenttime Focus surface dose

product [mAs] [mGy]

Head Front Normal 64 16 Small focus 1.248 mGy

Chest Front Normal 79 3.2 Large focus 0.4211 mGy

Abdomen Front Normal 77 63 Small focus 7.302 mGy

9
9.1.6 Deterministic effect (ICRP60)

Deterministic effects may occur when radiation dose on certain organs or body tissues exceeds the
threshold. The areas of interest of diagnostic radiology are the skin and the crystalline lens. The 9
threshold at which a deterministic effect occurs on these body tissues is 1 to 3 Gy.
The reference value of entrance surface dose is 67.14 mGy brought by a single radiography with the
radiography conditions, 133 kV, 200 mAs, which gives the maximum entrance surface dose. The
measurement condition and system are same as those shown in "9.1.5 Entrance surface dose -
9
reference value" P.9-2.
Therefore, performing radiography fifteen times or more with the condition giving the maximum
entrance surface dose may bring a deterministic effect on the patient. 9
The operator must control exposure dose properly in consideration of the above, when using the
equipment.
