4.1 PHASE CURRENT TWO ZONE DEFINITE TIME PROTECTION

Two-zone time definite protection includes time definite rapid breaking and time definite overcurrent. The unit
checks three phase current. The unit outputs tripping signal after settable time delay when a current is more than
the current setting. Two zones of protection shall selects separately on or off. The current setting and time setting

9
NR-320/321 Self-Powered Protection Relay Instructions

may be set separately. The protection operation curve is seen in Fig. 4.1.

4.2 PHASE CURRENT INVERSE TIME PROTECTION

The phase current inverse time protection provides three curves for selection, i.e., normal inverse time, very
inverse time and extremely inverse time.
Time-current equation of three curves is as follows,
a . normal inverse time: t = 0.14τ/[(I/Ip)0.02 -1]

b . very inverse time : t = 13.5τ/[(I/Ip) -1]

c . extremely inverse time : t = 80τ/[(I/Ip)2 -1]

where, t- trip time

10
NR-320/321 Self-Powered Protection Relay Instructions

tI〉 - time multiplier

I - fault current
Is - current setting
4.3 ZERO-SEQUENCE DEFINITE TIME PROTECTION
One-zone zero-sequence definite time protection is used to check the ground current for neutral point insulation
or compensation system. The capacitive current is more heavy in long cable system. Because the zero-sequence
current of indirectly grounded system is less, it required that the unit measures the zero-sequence in higher
accuracy, so the ratio of zero sequence current transformer shall be selected more carefully. Zero sequence time
definite protection may be selected to throw in or drop out. The current setting and time setting may be set
separately.

4.4 ZERO SEQUENCE INVERSE TIME PROTECTION

The zero sequence inverse time protection provides three curves for selection, i.e., normal inverse time, very
inverse time and extremely inverse time. Time-current equation of three curves and curve characteristic is as the
same as phase current inverse time protection.
4.5 EXTERNAL CONTACT TRIP DIRECTLY
The unit has two switch quantity input circuits. The power supply is internal (dry contact input) .
Both of switch quantity inputs are connected directly to the trip output. The trip time delay may be set. It is used

11
NR-320/321 Self-Powered Protection Relay Instructions

generally for transformer over-heat, heavy gas protection. Throw-in or drop-out is selected with a keypad.
4.6 HEAVY CURRENT BLOCK TRIP
This function is used mainly for load switch + fuse. Because the load switch has not ability to break short-circuit
current, the unit shall block all of protection functions (including external contact trip directly) if the load current is
more than set block current when this function is started. The fault is cut off by the fuse to assure that the load
switch is not damaged. This configuation may meet requirements of short-circuit fault cutoff and overload cutoff to
make protection function fully perfect.
This function must be droped out when the breaker is used.
4.7 PASIVE TRIP OUTPUT CONFIGURATION
The unit has two groups of output terminals. The one is fixed as relay empty contact output, the other is
selected as active pulse output or relay empty contact output.
First group of relay empty contact output (terminal 3D-4, 3D-5, 3D-6) has make contacts and break contacts
used to indicate the protection signals. The contacts have self-holding. When any protection of the unit operates,
the relay is energized and still held until the button is pressed down after the protection signal disappears.

The other group of output (3D-7, 3D-8) is used to drive tripping.

When active pulse output is selected, the unit may supply 24V~220V,
10A (the highest) short time pulse energy, which repeats output in 250ms

interval of 250ms to ensure the breaker off. When it is used as

12 t
Fig.3.5 Pulse output diagram
NR-320/321 Self-Powered Protection Relay Instructions

empty contact output, the contact is arranged as break contact to

ensure that this contact is held at close position when the protection
picks up until the protection signal disappears.

4.8 EVENT RECORD

The unit may record 100 historic events, including various events, such as overcurrent protection operation,
switch quantity input position change, equipment fault, etc. Each of records contains informations of event time (in
ms) , various relative ac input values, switch quantity input status, etc. The event information is not lost when the
unit is powered off because event information is recorded in FLASH chip.
The event records are stored in successive order of happening time. When the events are more than 100, the
unit covers automatically and successively the oldest record with the newest record. Each of event records may be
watched on the LCD of the unit and also uploaded by use of the communication bus.

1 、 In order to ensure that the protection of the unit doesn’t mis-operate

during revising various parameters, all protection functions of the unit drop out automatically when the

human-computer interface enters into revision status of various parameters (including system parameter,

setting parameter) . So the unit is returned to the main menu or operation menu in time after the parameter

has been revised to ensure that the protection function is thrown in without delay.

2 、 There is a high-energy backup battery inside the unit capable to meet operation power requirement

when there is not any power supplied to the unit externally. The unit is in low power consumption active

standby operation status when the power line can not supply enough energy to the unit. The unit may be

called to operation at any time by use of the front board key. The standby batter is of high performance

maintenance-free lithium cell, may operate at least for 15 years under the normal condition.

8. PROTECTION SETTING DESCRIPTION
The protection setting has nothing to do with CT ratio of the system parameter. The protection setting must be set

according to the secondary current when setting in accordance with actual ratio (for example, 30/50A) of a line.

For example, the intelligent protection unit is set as follows for the unit used in a line, in which, the

transformer is of 1250kVA, 20kV voltage with 30/5A of actual CT ratio. The primary rated current is 36A and the

secondary rated current is 6A.

CT ratio is set at 6.

The overcurrent protection setting is set according to 1.5 times, the current is 9A and the time is 0.5s.

The rapid break protection setting is set 5 times, the rated current is 30A and the time is 0s .

9. PROTECTION TEST DESCRIPTION
9.1 The system wiring is shown in fig. 9.1

9.2 TEST METHOD

9.2.1 Primary current fault

30
simulation test

If there is a heavy current generator on the test spot, the primary current fault is simulated to test. A heavy current

is applied to the primary side of CT. The protection secondary current is input into terminals 2D1-2, 2D3-4, 2D5-6.

The power supply is input into terminals 1D3-4 , 1D6-7 , 1D9-10. The following is tested.

* primary current value of CT when starting protection unit

A current is applied to the primary side of CT. The current rises from 0A until the operation indicator of protection

unit lights and LCD lights to show data. The primary current value of CT is record at this time. It is better that is not

over 10% of CT ratio. It is proposed to replace a qualified CT when it is over 20% of CT ratio.

* protection test

A current is applied to the primary side of CT. The current rises from 0A until the protection picks up and breaker

trips. The primary current value of CT is record at this time. Compare with protection setting, it is better that the error

is not more than 5% . It is proposed to replace the protection unit when error is more than 5%.

9.2.2 Secondary current fault simulation test

If there is not any heavy current generator on the test spot, the secondary current fault is simulated to test. The

31
secondary current of the protection is input directly to terminals 2D1-2, 2D3-4, 2D5-6 of the protection unit. The

power is supplied to the unit at first. The method is as follows.

Method 1: DC 24V (or 48V) is applied to 1D13 (+power) and 1D14 (-power) of the unit. The unit may

operate normally. At this time, the operation indicator of the protection unit lights and LCD lights to show data.

Method 2: AC 20~30V voltage is applied across any of 1D3-4, 1D6-7, 1D9-10 of the unit. The unit may

operate normally. At this time, the operation indicator of the protection unit lights and LCD lights to show data.

Warning : A heavier AC current ( above 5A ) is not applied to any of 1D3-4, 1D6-7, 1D9-10 of the unit.

If not, the unit is burnt probably.

* the protection is tested after the power is supplied to the unit correctly

The secondary current of the protection is input to terminals 2D1-2, 2D3-4, 2D5-6 of the protection unit. The current

rises from 0A until the protection picks up and breaker trips. The primary current value of CT is record at this time.

Compare with protection setting, it is better that the error is not more than 5% . It is proposed to replace the protection

unit when error is more than 5%.
