About the Bags
The 3 Bags are of quite different designs
The Book Bag can take quite substantial books in its easy to access format
The Sporran is our take on a belt mounted purse
The Kite Pouch is a handy size deep pouch to store whatever you need in.
The Consumables
Vegetable Tanned Leather
For straps and buckle ends we suggest 1.5 to 2mm thick Veg tanned leather, this is both
strong and flexible
For the Body of the Bags 3 - 3.5mm Veg tanned leather is ideal
Suede
For the gussets and the Sporran Pouch we used suede, a faily heavy suede was used (between
1mm and 2mm thick) you can use pre dyed or by natural suede and stain it yourself. You
could use a soft predyed leather for these parts if you prefer.
1/4 Inch or 6mm Eyelets or Grommets for Leather
Not actually required for the Sporran but if you wish to use them for added effect you will
need to enlarge the lacing holes on the design to fit. You will need plenty of these plus the
tool to set them for the adjtable shoulders, always get spares as it is rare for every eyelet
to set correctly, Grommets are esentially eyelets with an extra washer on the back but are
usually also slightly heavier material
Two Piece Tubular Cap Rivets
Choose a complimentary finish, you will need to fasten either two or three thicknesses of
leather so buy enough of both sizes plus some spares.
Contact Adhesive
Suitable for Leather - Not essential, can be used to reinforce the stitched joins
Thread
Choose a complimentary colour thread to your dye a heavyweight thread is reccomended
since bags and pouches often take a lot of wear and tear
Buckle
You need a single 5/8th inch (15mm) buckles for the book bag (x2) and for sporran and the
kite pouch (x1)
Dye
Whatever colour you prefer
Also something to seal the surface, clear wax, dubbin or similar to give a more weather proof
finish
Building the Book Bag
Cut the Book Bag Main Body and Book Bag Front from thicker leather, at this point add any
decoration to these parts you might want, edge bevel, slick, dye and Edge Kote both parts.
Cut the Gusset from a complimentary coloured suede or soft leather
It is easier to add the Buckles and straps at this point rather than after the bag has been sewn
together, you need just 6 rivets. You may need to adjust the position of the buckles depending
on the buckle design
Sew the gusset to the main body of the bag, then attach the Bag Front to the gusset.
Finally fold the top of the main body over and sew along the fold line as indicated this forms
the flap over the front of the bag and the belt loop.
Building the Sporran
For the Sporran you will also need some thonging to hold the strap in place and a cord to run
around the bag
Cut the Bag Reinforcement and Bag Front from thicker leather, at this point you can add any
decoration to these parts you might want such as tooling. Bevel the edges, slick, dye and
Edge Kote both parts.
Cut the Pouch from a complimentary coloured suede or soft leather
It is easier to add the Buckles and straps at this point rather than after the bag has been sewn
together, you will need 6 rivets.
Insert thonging into the holes in the circular piece, so that you have two loops showing
on the outside. Once the circle is sewn down the strap on the pouch will go through the
thonging. The thonging can be secured with a little contact adhesive.
Sew the bag to the main reinforcement, then sew on the circle.
Insert cord through the holes around the edge of the bag. Pulling/gathering them will close
the bag.
Building the Kite Pouch
Cut the Bag Main Body and Bag Front and Bag Flap from thicker leather, at this point you
can add any decoration to these parts you might want such as tooling. Bevel the edges, slick,
dye and Edge Kote all parts.
Cut the Gusset from a complimentary coloured suede or soft leather
It is easier to add the Buckles and straps at this point rather than after the bag has been sewn
together, you will need 5 rivets. You may need to adjust the buckle end slightly depending on
your buckle
Sew the gussets to the main body of the bag, starting with the front section, then join it to the
back. Fold the belt loop over, put the front flap in place and sew together.
