INTRODUCTION
GROWING IN CHRIST: Personal Christian Discipleship is a book designed to help the new believer in
the Lord Jesus Christ to begin a life-long walk with the Saviour.
New Christians cannot hope to be able grow in Jesus, become more like Him, if they do not know the Word
of God and what it is that God wants for them. For that reason, GROWING IN CHRIST relies heavily on
personal study of the Word of God.
Personal Bible study can be an exciting adventure. When answering a question in GROWING IN
CHRIST, do not just copy the verse into the blank. See how the verse of Scripture answers the question.
Then write the answer in your own words. Personalize your response by using“I…..me…..my…..” in your
answer. Be sure to pray before you begin and during each prayer.
“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law,” the Bible tells us in Psalms 119:18
(RSV). That is our prayer for you as you study His Word.
Another important part of GROWING IN CHRIST is memorizing of Bible verses. If we have Scripture
hidden in our hearts, it is much easier to resist the devil so that he will flee from us. There will be one Bible
passage in each lesson for you to memorize. Just say them over and over each day before you begin work
before your lesson and they will become a part of you. Be sure to say the Bible reference before and after the
actual words, just as it is written in your book. The boldface type before each Memory Verse will tell you
the theme of the verse. Also try to memorize the books of the New Testament, reciting Matthew through
Colossians after finishing the first five chapters and 1 Thessalonians through Revelation after Chapter Ten.
Personal discipleship is also discipleship that is accountable to other Christians. That means we cannot be
disciples of Jesus alone, but with others and should be responsible to each other for our maturing in Him.
For that reason, GROWING IN CHRIST has a chart to check your progress in maturity. Have others in
your group tick off your assignments as you complete them. Use the form to help you to be a maturing
Christian, one who is GROWING IN CHRIST.
Chapter 1
HOW TO BE SURE YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE
Begin by memorizing:
Assurance of salvation: 1 John 5:11-12
And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has
life; he who has not the Son of God has not life.
If you have received Jesus Christ, God’s Son, as your saviour, you have become a child of God in whom
Jesus Christ dwells. Let us consider the new enemy you now face. Before you trusted Christ, Satan may not
have bothered you particularly. But now you have left his crowd and joined those who believe in and follow
the son of God and his Word. You are no longer in Satan’s kingdom. You belong to Jesus Christ, who has
paid for you with a price – the price of his own blood shed on the cross.
The first five Memory Verses in this book will equip you for your first encounters with the enemy. His first
approach is often to bring doubt in the work God has done in your heart. Although you may not hear your
voice, he will whisper this in your mind: “You don’t think you are saved and your sins are forgiven just by
believing and receiving Christ? Surely that is not enough!” What will your answer be? Your only hope of
successfully resisting such an attack is to turn to God’s Word.
When the truth of 1 John 5:11-12 is written in your heart, you can use it every time a doubt about your
salvation arises.

4. Read Ephesians 2:8-9. Can we be saved by our good deeds or works? On what basis does God save
us? ………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Tick (√) any of these changes you have experienced in your life.
…………… New peace in your heart
…………… Overcoming sin
…………… Loving God more
…………… Desire to read the Bible
…………… Sensing God’s forgiveness
…………… New love for other people
Now take a few moments to thank God for all He has given you in Christ.
Another attack from Satan may be along this line: he will whisper to you, “You have life, all right,
but you are a weakling; you have always been a weakling.” He will remind you of some sin which
has bothered you for years. He will point out to something of which you are aware, and say. “You
are weak, and you will not be able to stand against this temptation. You may be able to stand against
others, but not this one.”
Our second Memory Verse, 1 Corinthians 10:13, is chosen especially to meet this attack of Satan.
This gives Assurance of victory. God promises victory! It belongs to you as his child. Believe him,
and you will see how God does things that are impossible with men. It will thrill you to see chains
of lifetime habits broken by his mighty power.

To confess a sin means to uncover it and call it exactly what God calls it – sin. This honest
confession must include the willingness to forsake the sin. God promises not only to forgive us, but
also to cleanse us. What a great promise!

THE WHEEL
The key to living a victorious, Spirit filled Christian life is Jesus Christ as the centre of all we do. With Jesus
in control, life is balanced and effective. The wheel illustration above shows clearly this Christ –centred life.
Just as the driving force in a wheel comes from the hub or centre, so the power to live the Christian life
comes from Jesus Christ, the centre. He lives in us in the person of the Holy Spirit, whose purpose is to
glorify Jesus. The rim of the wheel represents our response to Christ’s Lordship through wholehearted, day-
to-day Obedience to Him.
The spokes of the wheel show how Jesus’ power flows into our lives. We communicate with God through
the vertical spokes – The Word and Prayer. The Word is our spiritual food as well as the sword of the Spirit
for spiritual battle. It is the foundation spoke for growing in our Christian lives.
Opposite this is the spoke representing Prayer. Through prayer we draw close to our heavenly Father and
receive help for our needs. As we pray we show that we trust and depend on God.
The horizontal spokes concern our relationship with people –with believers through Christian Fellowship
and with unbelievers through Witnessing. Fellowship centred around the Lord Jesus Christ offers the mutual
encouragement, correction, and stimulation we all need.
The first three spokes prepare us for passing on to others all that we have received from the Lord. This is
done through Witnessing, sharing our own experience of Christ, and explaining the gospel, God’s power to
save.
Begin reviewing 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and all of you verses from the first five chapters.
GROUP PROJECT: Before discussing this lesson, read aloud the wheel illustration found on page9 and. It
gives you an overview of the topics you will study in these last five chapters.

How can you read the Scriptures daily with profit? The Bible Reading
Chart at the back page can help you remember where you are reading the
Bible. Start with a New Testament Book like Philippians or
Thessalonians. Read that book all the way through before starting another
Book. As you read a chapter, mark(x) it on your reading chart so you can
know which chapters you have read.
You may want to put the date you finished reading the book as described
above. Keep you Bible Reading Chart with your Bible. Marking your
chart right after you finish your daily reading will encourage you as you
see progress in getting to know God’s Word.
The Hand Illustration shows the steps we need to get God’s Word in our lives. The little finger reminds us
that first of all we need to hear the Word of God (Romans 10:17). The next finger illustrates that we should
read the Word of God for ourselves (Revelations 1:3). The middle finger reminds us we must study the
Word (Acts 17:1). The first finger reminds us to memorize God’s Word (Psalms 119:9-11). Finally, we
canfirmly grasp the Word by meditating (Psalms 1:2-3) on it, as shown by the thumb helping the fingers to
grasp the Bible.
Chapter 7

FELLOWSHIP
True Fellowship means giving to and receiving from other Christians. You can share with others whatever
God has given you – forgiveness, possessions, love, His word. He wants all Christians to live in unity and
harmony with one another.

WITNESSING HELPS
Now that you have seen how Paul told his story, work on a way to tell how
your lifechanged when you came to know Jesus personally. In sharing your
remember to:
1. Make it personal. Do not preach. Tell what Christ has done for you.
2. Make it short. Three or four minutes should be enough to cover all
the important facts.
3. Keep Christ central as you tell what He has done.
4. Use the Bible as the authority, not your church or the person who led
you to Christ.
5. Avoid religious terms which your non-Christian friend may not
understand.
On the next page, write your conversion story down as you would tell it to a non-Christian friend. As you
prepare, ask the Lord for opportunities to share it with a relative, someone in the neighbourhood, someone at
work or school.
GROUP PROJECT: After your discussion, several of you may tell your conversion story to the group, as
you would to a non-believer. Use the notes you made on the next page.

THE OBEDIENT CHRISTIAN
When you placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Saviour, a life of obedience to God became a real
possibility. Through His death, Christ made possible the forgiveness of your sin. With his Holy Spirit living
in you, the power of sin in your life can be broken.
GROUP PROJECT: Before your discussion begins, take time for all group members who did not share last
week to briefly tell their conversion stories.

CONGRATULATIONS!
You have now completed all ten chapters in GROWING IN CHRIST.
Do not stop the good practices you have begun. Continue to memorize Scripture, review your verses,
and meet with the Lord Jesus Daily as you read His Word and pray. Share with others what he is
teaching you.
We strongly encourage you to lead a friend (or a group) through the same books you have completed. The
reason for this:
1. You will have the joy of seeing God use you to build into the life of others.
And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men
who will also be qualified to teach others.
2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV)
2. This will help deepen in your own life the Biblical truths you have learned during this study of
personal Christian discipleship.
3. Many more people can be helped to maturity in Christ in this way.
To prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the whole body of Christ may be built up until we
all reach unity in the faith and in knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the
whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Ephesians 4:12-13 (NIV)
Your group leader can tell you how to start your group and how to get the Bible Study materials. Continue
to grow toward Christian maturity by continuing these practices you have begun. God will greatly bless you
as you remain obedient to Him and continue GROWING IN CHRIST.
