Rationale
Civil engineering is a field that involves the design, construction, and
maintenance of infrastructure. From roads and bridges to buildings and airports, civil engineering
plays a crucial role in shaping modern society ( Lakade ,2024) . Civil engineering is important
since it helps build and maintain the infrastructure that society [Link] engineering plays a

economic development and the well-being of people. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and
airports facilitates trade and commerce, allowing businesses to thrive and economies to grow
( Lakade ,2024). Despite the contributions of civil engineers to society the wage received by the
engineers are not enough hence they are underpaid . One of the reasons civil engineers get paid
less is often because we work in the service of the community and are paid by taxpayer dollars
instead of stock market investors or real estate developers (Goldman , 2024).
This issue is not isolated in a single region ,as similar challenges exist in multiples regions as
well. After Nepali Civil Engineering students complete their studies, Nepali civil engineers often
prefer working for the government over private companies. This is because the government
offers more projects, like roads and buildings. They also provide job security, benefits, and a
pension plan, which may not be available in private companies (Chapagain, 2021). Additionally,
in Nepali society, working for the government is seen as a prestigious and respected job.
However, private companies should aim to create better working conditions to attract skilled
engineers and increase productivity. Factors like job security, compensation, the work
environment, and opportunities for career growth are crucial for civil engineers to be satisfied
with their jobs. According to the U.S department of labor , The yearly salary of a civil engineer is
$95,890 per year (U.S Department of Labor, 2023). Most of the engineers contacted by

In a national perspective , similar challenges are also seen in different states as well. According
to the Pro-People Engineers and Leaders (PROPEL), an organization composed of engineers
and those promoting the welfare of the profession , estimates that the salary of entry-level
engineers in the Philippines ranges between P16,000 to P22,000 (PROPEL,2024).This, the group
said, is hardly a livable wage amid boiling inflation. Outside the capital region, PROPEL
estimates that salaries for entry-level engineering roles are much lower, ranging from P10,000 to
P15,000 (PROPEL, 2024). The minimun wage of Civil Engineers are not enough . As filipino
employees, while seeing a minimum net wage increase higher from last year, may not be able to
live off the amount earned from work( Ha , 2024). As inflation rises each year while the yearly
remains the same , it is without a doubt that the low income pay of engineers is insufficient to
satisfy their needs.
