Asmi: Herbert is the well-deserved person who wrote this marvellous series.
The series is majorly A hexalogy or 6 books series but has more extensions which
makes this series of literally 25 books.
The series' major book is
1. Dune (1965)
2. Dune Messiah (1969)
3. Children of Dune (1976)
4. Heretics of Dune (1984)
5. God Emperor of Dune
6. Chapterhouse: Dune (1985)
Each of the books brings its own groundbreaking story talking about the political
affairs of the kingdoms all over the universe.
Divyanshu: But before that we should know a small plot of the dunes.
Remember that here we will be only diving a bit in the first and second books,
Dune (1965) and Dune Messiah (1969). For other books, we will keep it spoiler-
free so you will enjoy reading the books.
Dunes is a small planet in all of the everlasting universe, but it has its major
importance is not it’s land or water but a special resource. But before telling the
importance you might ask what happened to the earth? Earth in this universe
was quite different from our own Earth. Here there were no separate civilizations
but it only had 1 civilization ruling over the entire earth, thus here the combined
forces caused a rapid infrastructure. The people would look at the sky glaring at
the stars, thinking endlessly. With the rapid growth, spaceships far superior to
ours were made, and people started migrating all over the universe. Here
kingdoms and partition happened. But here comes Dunes Planet, a harsh sandy,
deserted planet. It doesn’t seem to have anything, but it had the spices. The
spices were known as, Melange. But why was it so special? This spice was a drug
that enhanced the consumers' navigating skills or expanded powers of
perception making it possible for navigators to travel safely. Spaceships also
needed this element so it doesn’t directly get into a star, killing the person in it.
That meant, that whoever had control over this was the dominant force of the
entire universe.
With that, the books revolve around the protagonist Paul Atreides, the son of
Duke Leto Atreides and Lady Jessica. With the corruption in the universe, Paul is
said to be the person to be the messiah-like figure who people expect to bring
about great change. He was the person who was said in the prophecy..
Remembering this person, he is the main character for the first 3 books.
Remember this was just a tiny glimpse of this specific universe. With the count of
stories and adventures, it is very difficult to tell you about everything in a
summary too.
Sakina: Herbert was inspired to write Dune after visiting the Oregon Dunes in
Florence, Oregon in 1957. He was struck by the power of the sand and the
interaction between people and nature. The setting of Dune on the desert planet
Arrakis was inspired by his experience in Florence. Even with that, Herbert
explored the moral question of whether humans should manipulate the
environment. The novel raises this question through the issue of the gene pool.
Het: Dune by Frank Herbert is a masterwork novel that brings together great
science fiction, political intrigue, and philosophical depth within an intricate web
set against the desert planet of Arrakis as Paul Atreides moves along his path
through evermore complex webs of struggle for power, prophecies, and
ecological challenges. His world-building is fabulous as in the telling of a richly
detailed universe, there seems to be a clash of control over this invaluable spice
called "melange" among noble houses, powerful religious orders, and the desert-
dwelling Fremen. This work can make people reflect on political machinations,
environmental significance concerning Arrakis, and perhaps the complex cultural
dynamics of its inhabitants in issues of power and survival as well as human
connection with nature.
Beyond its compelling storyline, Dune also explores themes of leadership,
destiny, and human potential.
Samruudhi: For people who love sci-fi, this series is an example that shows how
sci-fi is made. With this, dune is said to be the most successful sci-fi novel with
about 20 million copies. Even there are movies in this series, with Dune Part 1
and Dune Part 2 which came in 2024. Dune Part 1 grossed over grossed over
$407 million worldwide and Dune’s Part 2 grossed over $700.6 million worldwide.
This astonishing collection just shows the people's craze all over the world. With
Frank Herbert not with us, his son, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson continue
his legacy by creating more and more books of the series Dunes.
