Revised Regulations for University Post-Doctoral Fellowship with effect
from 20.02.2024
Introduction
The main objective of the University Post-Doctoral Fellowship (UPDF) Scheme is to
encourage and retain young researchers who have completed Ph.D. and wish to
pursue research on thrust areas of interest. The candidates aspiring for UPDF should
have potential academic and research records.
Eligibility
Applicants should have obtained Ph.D. degree in accordance with the UGC
regulations and from a recognized University on Full-Time basis.
The candidate should have at least five research publications from journals listed in
SCI/SCI-E/Web of Science for Science disciplines, SCOPUS/SSCI/AHCI for Arts,
Humanities and Social Science disciplines and UGC-CARE Group I/II for Tamil and
English Languages. The applicant should be either first author (or) corresponding
author in these research articles.
(a) The upper age limit of the applicant is 35 years at the time of the submission
of application.
(b) The candidate is permitted to avail UPDF once in the Periyar University.
(c) A candidate can apply to any one of the Departments at a time.
How to apply
Fellow will be invited through advertisements in leading newspapers/Periyar
University website. The applications are to be submitted only by online. A hard copy
of the same along with all necessary enclosures must be sent to the Registrar,
Periyar University, Salem-636011 on or before the last date. The application has to
be signed by a mentor for carrying out his/her research work. Cost of Application is
fixed at Rs. 1,000/-.

Research Proposal
I. The candidates shall submit a research proposal as per the format given in
the University website.
a. Abstract of the research proposal (about 300 words) along with a title
b. Origin of Proposal
c. Objectives / hypothesis of the proposal
d. Methodology in brief
e. Expected outcomes
II. A Presentation of the proposed work is mandatory at the time of interview.
Selection Procedure
Applications shall be scrutinized by the expert committee. The shortlisted
candidates will be called for interaction/presentation before the expert
committee. The expert committee makes recommendations to the University,
based on the merit in each discipline/department. The selection procedure
should be completed within 30 days from the last date of receiving application.
Programme Duration and Fellowship
The fellowship is purely on temporary basis and shall be availed for a
maximum period of 2 years with monthly fellowship of Rs.20,000/- and annual
contingency of Rs.10,000/-. The candidate has to publish at least one research
paper in journals listed in SCOPUS/SCI/SCI-E for Science disciplines,
SSCI/AHCI for Arts, Humanities and Social Science disciplines and UGC-
CARE Group I/II for Tamil and English Language as first/corresponding
author every year of the programme.
The fellow shall submit the progress report before the end of the first year of
his/her tenure to the University. The fellowship shall be extended to the
second year based on the research performance and the decision of expert
committee.
Terms and Conditions
1. The selected fellow shall work for a minimum period of one year and shall
not avail any other fellowship during the first year.
2. In case, if the fellow wants to discontinue the programme in the middle,
he/she has to submit all the data to the mentor for publication. Only then
his/her request would be considered on valid grounds.

3. If there is no fruitful publication, the University Post-Doctoral Fellowship (UPDF)
candidates should reimburse the amount received from University and then
discontinue.
4. If the candidate gets PDF position from Government funding agencies such as
DST/DBT/ICMR/CSIR/UGC/ICSSR etc., he/she may be permitted to be relived
from University Post-Doctoral Fellowship (UPDF).
5. In case the candidate is selected for similar PDFs in other similar state universities,
he/she would not be permitted or he/she has to reimburse the fellowship claimed so
far.
Leave Rules
The fellow may avail a maximum of 12 days leave on personal grounds and 30 days
on duty leave for research related work per year. Additional on duty leave may be
granted by the Head of Department with the recommendation of the mentor.

After the completion of the tenure of University Post-Doctoral Fellowship
(UPDF), the University shall issue a certificate and testimonial to the
candidate.
