Key Answer

The document contains a series of engineering problems related to stress analysis, including calculations for tensile and shearing stress in various materials and structures. It provides specific scenarios involving cables, bolts, pipes, and punches, requiring students to apply their knowledge of mechanics to solve for maximum loads and stresses. Instructions emphasize legibility, avoidance of erasures, and proper formatting of final answers.

I.
1. The homogeneous bar ABCD shown is supported by a cable that runs from A to B
around the smooth peg at E, a vertical cable at C, and a smooth inclined surface
at D. Determine the mass of the heaviest bar that can be supported if the stress
in each cable is limited to 100 MPa. The area of the cable AB is 250𝑚𝑚2 and that
of the cable at C is 300𝑚𝑚2 . (25 pts)

2. A steel bolt, 2.50 cm in diameter, carries a tensile load of 40 kN. Estimate the
average tensile stress at the section a and at the screwed section b, where the
diameter at the root of the thread is 2.10 cm. (15 pts)

Solution:

3. A circular pipe with outside diameter of 4 in. and wall thickness of ½ in. is
subjected to an axial tensile force of 35,000 lb. Compute the average normal
stress. (10 pts)

II. Shearing Stress

1. As in the figure, a hole is to be punched out of a plate having a shearing strength
of 40 ksi. The compressive stress in the punch is limited to 50 ksi. (a) Compute
the maximum thickness of plate in which a hole 2.5 inches in diameter can be
punched. (b) If the plate is 0.25-inch thick, determine the diameter of the
smallest hole that can be punched. (15 pts)

2. A lever is keyed to a shaft 4 cm diameter, the width of the key being 1.25 cm
and its length is 5 cm. What load P can be applied at an arm of a = 1 m if the
average shearing stress in the key is not to exceed 60 MN/𝑚2 ? (15 pts)
Solution:

3. A circular punch 20 mm in diameter is used to punch a hole through a steel plate

10 mm thick. If the force necessary to drive the punch through the metal is 250
kN, determine the maximum shearing stress developed in the material. (10 pts)
