Langage, Langue, Parole
Langage is a universal system which has an underlying, fundamental, structure so
that linguistic communication can work. It also is defined as language as a whole
instead of sections or attributes of language itself.
The language phenomenon that is known as langage has many moving parts, both
langue and parole being a part of it.
In the context of “Humans can learn language, but animals can't.” The word
‘language’ does not mean a single specific language, but more so a plane of
communication that humans have.
Langue shows the principles of systematics abstract from a language. without it,
parole (meaningful utterance) wouldn't be available.
The abilities of people in a group such as sharing knowledge and doing
coordination (internal for both individual and collective) are represented by
langue so far beyond the individual's willingness to change.
For example, you understand the word “small” only because you understand the
word “large”. Small and large, both the words, are part of Langue. Your
understanding of the word small is Parole.
The difference between Langue and Parole is that Langue is a construct of many
things and Parole is purely individual.
Parole is the concrete form of langue. Parole is often equated with speech, it
refers to specific oral and written communications that point to the uniqueness of
each individual. Despite using the same language, each individual has a different
way of pronouncing it. The concept of parole is the individual's uniqueness in
choosing diction (words) or composing sentences when communicating.
For example, in the word "chair", where the word "chair" is a parole that forms a
langue "seat". Then the word "hospital" (parole) forms the phrase "treatment point
for the sick", thus implying that it is a concrete form of langue.
The text explains that according to Saussure, langue is a system of marks or codes
(which may be grammar), while parole itself is an articulation of the sign, such as
a greeting or message, both oral and written.
