Chapter – 5 Fraction
Concept of Fraction
1
A fraction means a part of a group or an area. For example, one shaded part out of four parts of a square =
4

If a number is in the form of p/q, it is called a fraction.

Where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0.
A fraction is a number that represents a part of a whole. A fraction is a quotient of two whole numbers.
2
Example: The fraction has a numerator of 2 and a denominator of 3.
3

Some important facts related to fractions.

• In a fraction, the top number is called the numerator, and the bottom number is called the denominator.
• Every rational number can be converted to a fraction.
• Not all fractions are rational numbers.

a
• The simplest form of every fraction is a rational number.

Fractions are divided into the following types:

1. Proper Fraction
ill
A proper fraction is one in which the numerator (number of equal parts counted) is less than the denominator (total number of
or
parts). These fractions are all less than on the number line.
The above pizza example, with each person receiving ⅜ th of the pizza, demonstrates a proper fraction.

2. Improper Fraction
G

An improper fraction occurs when the numerator (number of equal parts counted) is greater than the denominator (total number
of parts). These fractions are greater than one and lie on the number line beyond one. When more than one thing is divided into
equal halves, they come into play. The number of equal parts is represented by the denominator. The numerator represents the
u

number of available parts.

Example: there are a total of 8 slices in each. One has 8 slices left, and the other has only 6 slices. So, the fraction representing.
Ed

Addition of both pizza’s parts and whole = 1+6/8=14/8

3. Mixed Fraction
As the name suggests, it combines a whole and a 'part.' By dividing the numerator by the denominator and obtaining the quotient
and remainder, an improper fraction can be stated as a mixed fraction.
4
Example: 2
6

4. Unlike Fractions
Fractions with different denominators are called unlike fractions. Here the denominators of fractions have different values. So,
it can also be defined as fractions having the same numerator and different denominators are known as unlike fractions.
4 4 4 4 4
Example: , , , ,
7 5 11 13 15

5. Like Fractions
Fractions with the same denominator and different numerators are known as like fractions.
7 12 15 9 23
Example: , , , ,
8 8 8 8 8

6. Unit Fractions or Unique Fractions

Fractions that have 1 as a numerator are known as unit fractions or unique fractions.
1 1 1
Examples: , ,
2 3 4

129
7. Equivalent Fractions
Equivalent fractions are fractions that have the same value when simplified.
1 50
Example: and are equivalent to 0.5. As a result, these are comparable fractions.
2 100

Some Important Rules Related to Fractions

• When given positive fractions have the same numerator, then the fraction with the smallest denominator is the largest and
the fraction with the largest denominator is the smallest. For example: 2/3, 2/7, 2/1, smallest denominator in 2/9 = 1, hence
largest fraction = 2/1.
• Largest denominator = 9, so smallest fraction = 2/9
• When given positive fractions have the same denominators, the fraction with the largest numerator is the largest and the
fraction with the smallest numerator is the smallest.
Example: - 5/11, 3/11, 2/11, 13/11
Largest numerator = 13, hence largest fraction = 13/11
Smallest numerator = 2, so smallest fraction = 2/11
• When a series of two or more fractions have the same numerator and denominator, the fraction with the largest numerator
and denominator is the largest.
Example:5/8, 6/7, 7/8, 8/9 have the greatest fraction 8/9 > 7/8 > 6/7 > 5/6.
• If a/b and c/d are two positive fractions, then:
ad > bc, then a/b > c/d
ad < bc, then a/b < c/d
• Numerators of like fractions can be added or subtracted without any procedure.

a
• If a fraction is divided by the denominator till a decimal, then the obtained fraction is called a decimal fraction.
• If, when dividing a numerator by its denominator, some digits and decimal pairs appear repeatedly at regular intervals, then

it is called a repeated fraction.
Example:7.3333…. etc.
ill
If the denominators of two or more fractions are equal, then the fraction whose numerator is larger will be larger and the
or
fraction whose numerator will be smaller. That difference will be smaller.

1 5 7 11
Example: , , and in,

Therefore, there will be the smallest fraction and the largest fraction .
12 12
u

• If two or more fractions have the same numerators, and the denominators are unequal, then the fraction whose denominator
will be larger. That fraction is the smallest and the fraction whose denominator is smallest will be the largest fraction.
Ed

(i) If, then
(ii) If, then
If the numerator of a fraction is smaller than the denominator, then the value of the fraction will be less than ‘1’.
• If the numerator of a fraction is greater than the denominator, then the value of the fraction is greater than '1'.

L.C.M of fractions and H.C.F make known:

LCM of numerator of fractions.
(i) L.C.M of fractions. =

Types Of Decimal Fractions

• Simple Decimal Fractions: Such decimal fractions in which the operation of division ends after some steps are called quiet
decimal fractions.
1 12 22
Example: = 0.125, = 0.48, = 0.46 etc.
8 25 50
• Repeated decimal fraction: Such a fraction, in which one digit or more than one digit is repeated after the decimal, is called
repeated decimal fraction.
Example:

Ed

(iii). 1.536̅

Converting Decimal Fractions to Simple Fractions

Rule: Write the given decimal fraction without decimal point in the numerator and put as many zeros below the decimal point in
the denominator along with 1 as there are digits after the decimal point.

Example: Convert each of the following fractions to simple fractions:

(i). 0.6
(ii). 6.75
(iii).0.2345
(iv). 0.00024
Explanation:
6 3
(i). 0.6 = =
10 5
675 27 3
(ii). 6.75 = = =6
100 4 4
2345 469 69

1000 200 200
24 3
(iv). 0.00024 = =
100000 12500

No matter how many zeros are added at the end of the digits after the decimal point, the value of the number does not change.
Example: 0.8 = 0.80 = 0.800 etc.
If the numerator and denominator of a fraction have the same number of decimal places, then we remove the decimal point from
both the numerator and denominator.

131
Adding Decimal Fractions
Rule: The given decimal fractions are written in such a way that their decimal points remain above and below each other, hence
these numbers are added in the normal method. In the answer, the decimal point is placed just below the decimal point. Similarly,
the process of reduction is done.

Multiplying a Decimal Fraction by an Integer

Rule: Without taking into account the decimal point, multiply this number by the given integer and put the decimal point in the
product before as many digits as there are in the number with the given decimal fraction.

Example: Simplify:
24.7156 × 12
Explanation:
247156 × 12 = 2965872
Now taking 4 decimal places in the product:
24.7156× 12 = 296.5872

Multiplication of Decimal Fractions

Rule: First of all, the given numbers are multiplied without a decimal point and then in the product, the decimal point is placed
at as many places as the sum of the decimal places of the given fractions.

Example: Simplify:

a
13.6 × 1.24
Explanation: 136 × 124 = 16864
Sum of decimal places in the given numbers = (1 + 2) = 3

ill
Therefore, by taking three decimal places in the product,
13.6 × 1.24=16.864
or
Dividing A Decimal Fraction by An Integer
Rule: Divide the decimal fraction by the given integer without taking care of the decimal and put the decimal point before the
quotient in as many places as there are decimal places in the given fraction.
G

Example: Simplify:

Explanation:
u

0.0221 ÷ 17
221 ÷ 17 = 13
Ed

decimal places = 4
0.0221+17=0.0013

Dividing A Decimal by A Decimal Fraction

Rule: Multiply each of the dividend and divisor by a power of 10 such that the divisor becomes an integer. Now divide using the
method given above.

Example: Simplify:
0.0256 ÷ 0.016
Explanation:
0.0256 0.0256×1000 25.6
= = = 1.6
0.016 0.016×1000 16

Finding The Greatest Common Multiple and Least Common Multiple of Decimal Fractions
Rule: Make the decimal digits equal in the given fractions by adding some zeros if necessary. Find the greatest common multiple
and least common multiple of these numbers without taking care of the decimal point. Now put decimal points as many places
before each number as there are decimal places.

Example: Find the greatest common multiple and least common multiple of 0.27, 1.8 and 0.036.
Explanation: Taking equal decimal places, the given numbers are: 0.270, 1.800, 0.036
These numbers without decimal point are: 270, 1800, 36.
Now the H.C.F of 270, 1800, 36. = 18

132
Hence, the HCF of the given numbers is = 0.018
L.C.M of 270, 1800, 36. = 18 × 5 × 2 × 3 × 10 = 5400
LCM of given numbers = 5.400 i.e. 5.4

Repeated Decimal Fractions: If there is continuous repetition of one or more decimal digits in a decimal fraction, then such
fractions are called repeated decimal fractions. To express such fractions, dot is put above the first and last digit of the repeated
digits or repeated digits. But let's draw the line.

Pure-Repeated Decimal Fractions: Such fractions in which all the digits after the decimal point are repeated are called pure
repeated decimal fractions. For Example: 0.3̅, 3.142857
̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅ etc.

Converting pure-repeated decimal fractions to ordinary fractions

a
Rule: Write the pure repeated decimal fraction in numerator without decimal point and take 9 in the denominator as many times
as the digits are repeated.

repeated is called mixed-repeated decimal fraction.

Converting mixed-repeated decimal fractions to ordinary fractions:

Rule: Once from the repeated part, the non-repeated part is subtracted from the numerator and the number of repeated digits in
the denominator is taken as 9 and as many zeros are placed in front of them as there are non-repeated digits.

Ascending or descending order of fractions: To find the ascending or descending order of fractions, following methods are
used:
(i) Comparison of two or more fractions: By converting into decimal form.
𝟕 𝟓 𝟏𝟏
Example: The descending order of V is determined as follows , and :
𝟏𝟐 𝟖 𝟏𝟓
Explanation:
