Pressure)
Date: 23/09/2021 Subject: Engineering Hydraulics
Assessor: Ms B Bosman Code: CHD22A
Submission Date: 30/09/2021
General Project Assignment Details:
• This project assignment is group work. Each group to consist of 5 members. NO
INDIVIDUAL WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.
• Each group must submit a full academic report; between 5 to 10 A4 pages length.
• Include a copy of the Rubric along with your submittal form in the front of your
assignment.
• Each student is expected to contribute toward the workload.
• Students are also expected to comply with the Graduate Attribute 4,6,8.
• The attached Rubric will assist the students in knowing exactly what to respond to
when responding to Graduate Attributes.
• Documented minutes of meetings and task allocations must also be attached to
report.
• Please note that tidy, neat, and well-organized work will be considered while marking.
Practical 1: Hydrostatic Pressure test
Graduate Attributes developed:
Graduate Attribute 4: Investigations, experiments and data analysis
Conduct investigations of broadly defined problems through locating and searching
relevant codes and catalogues, conducting standard tests, experiments and
measurements.
Graduate Attribute 6: Professional and technical communication
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing within an engineering context
Graduate Attribute 8: Individual, team and multidisciplinary working
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering management principles and
apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a technical team and to
manage projects.
PENALITIES will be applied in a case where the RUBRIC and MINUTES are not added in the
final submission.
Question 1
1. Using the data/measurements, obtained in the experiment, calculate the
following for each reading, tabulate the results and show proof of all
calculations.
a. Measured turning moment (units N.m)
b. Hydrostatic thrust, F (units Newtons)
c. Experimental center of pressure, h” (units meters)
d. Experimental turning moment (unit N.m)
e. Theoretical center of pressure, h” (unit meters)
Constants given:
Height of quadrant, D = 0.100 m
Width of quadrant, B = 0.075 m
Length of arm: L = 0.275 m
Quadrant to pivot: H = 0.200 m
2. Based on the calculated results, explain the possible causes of discrepancies between
experimental turning moment and theoretical turning moment.
3. With the use of existing literature explain the relationship between pressure and depth.
4. In short, provide a flow chart of the procedure followed in the experiment.
